VISSCHER, Claes Jansz.
Third state of a rare print of the execution of the conspirators in the failed attempt to assassinate the Dutch stadholder Maurits of Nassau, Prince of Orange, in 1623, skilfully engraved by the publisher and engraver Claes Jansz. Visscher. The plate is divided into nine panels, the main one showing a view of the beheading at the square in front of Het Binnenhof in The Hague, watched by a large crowd. The other panels show portraits of Reinier van Oldenbarnevelt, David Koornwinder, Adriaen Adriaensz. van Dijck and Cornelis Gerrits and five smaller scenes of the dismembering of the bodies.A heated theological and political conflict had raged in the Low Countries between the Arminians (from 1610 also called Remonstrants) and Gomarists for more than a decade when it came to a head with the Synod of Dort (1618/19), which decided in favour of the Gomarists. The Synod led to the 1619 execution of the Republics greatest statesman Johan van Oldenbarnevelt, who had supported the Arminian cause. In revenge his sons Reinier and Willem conspired to assassinate the (Gomarist) Dutch stadholder Maurits of Nassau, Prince of Orange. Other prominent members of Dutch society who had political, religious or personal grudges against the Prince lent their support. The plot was betrayed in February 1623, and the conspirators arrested and executed from March to May.The print was also issued as a broadsheet with a letterpress description below, here added in manuscript in an 18th-century(?) hand. A small restored tear at the foot of the engraving and a faint stain at the foot of the manuscript text … [Click Below for Full Description]

[MAURITS, Prince of Orange].
Popular allegorical print on the failed attempt to assassinate Maurits of Nassau, Prince of Orange, in 1623. The portraits of the conspirators, who were all Arminians, are displayed on a decapitated snake. The body of the dead snake encircles two trees, the felled tree of Arminianism, with Deceit cleaving to its trunk, and the Orange tree flanked by Religion and Justice and protected by divine light. At the left in the picture, the heads of the conspirators are displayed on pikes around the gallows.A heated theological and political conflict had raged in the Low Countries between the Arminians (from 1610 also called Remonstrants) and Gomarists for more than a decade when it came to a head with the Synod of Dort (1618/19), which decided in favour of the Gomarists. William Shakespeare
London: Blount & Jaggard, 1623. Original Shakespeare single leaf from FIRST FOLIO. The first Part of Henry the Sixt. This is an original leaf. It is NOT a reproduction, photocopy, poster or later impression. This leaf was salvaged from a woefully derelict copy of the First Folio, printed in London in 1623, and was part of a collection of leaves formed in England in the early 20th century. This leaf was compared to the same leaf in the Brandeis copy to verify accuracy of description. This leaf is leaf 97. The text is complete. There is some creasing as seen in the pictures but no loss of text. A bit of fingerstaining appears in the margin. Edges are frayed with some edge-browning as seen in the illustrations. There is some mild soiling, mostly from ingrained dust. This leaf is entirely original as found in the collection and has not been restored or mucked with. The leaf measures about 8 x 12 1/2 inches. This leaf has the crown watermark. There are but 232 known copies of the First Folio remaining in the world from a printing of about 750-1000 copies. Many are incomplete. This leaf is therefore very rare and it is unlikely to appear elsewhere in any condition. This leaf was part of a collection assembled in Oxfordshire in 1901/02. [Attributes: First Edition]

Amsterdam - Dirck Cornelisz. Swart, 1623
1623. EERSTE PLATTEGROND VAN DE DERDE UITLEG VAN AMSTERDAM DOOR DIRCK CORNELISZ. SWART 'Amstelredam', kopergravure vervaardigd in 1623 door Dirck Cornelisz. Swart. In de tijd met de hand gekleurd. Afm. 44,5 x 57 cm. [Click Below for Full Description]

RODRIGUEZ DE SAA Y MENEZES, Juan.
[20], 243, [1 blank] pp.Very rare first and only edition of a first-hand account of the rebellion of the Sinhalese natives, supported by the Dutch, against the Portuguese government of Ceylon (Sri Lanka), concentrating on the years 1623 to 1630, when the author's father was governor of the island. The main text in Spanish, comprising a prologue and sixteen chapters, begins with a general description of the island, its emperors before the arrival of the Portuguese in 1505, the customs of the natives, and the Portuguese government. These are followed by an account of the author's father, Constantino de Saa y Noroña (1586-1630), his taking office as governor and captain general, his principles of government and his reforms, his victories and conquests, and his achievements generally. Finally comes the rebellion itself, led by the King of Kandy, and its immediate aftermath, including the death of De Saa. Although the Dutch came to Ceylon in 1602 and encouraged disgruntled natives to fight against the Portuguese twenty years before De Saa took office, it was largely after his defeat and death in 1630 that the Dutch gained the upper hand in the struggle for control of Ceylon. It was only in 1658, however, that they succeeded in ousting the Portuguese and bringing the island under Dutch control. With the front board partially detached from the bookblock, otherwise in very good condition. An essential primary source on the native rebellion in Ceylon.l Goldsmith, BMC STC Spanish & Portuguese R-163; Lach & Van Kley III, p. 951-952; Palau 274944.

Amsterdam - Dirck Cornelisz. Swart, 1623
1623. EERSTE PLATTEGROND VAN DE DERDE UITLEG VAN AMSTERDAM DOOR DIRCK CORNELISZ. SWART ?Amstelredam?, kopergravure vervaardigd in 1623 door Dirck Cornelisz. Swart. In de tijd met de hand gekleurd. Afm. 44,5 x 57 cm. [Click Below for Full Description]

1623. 8, 20 Bl., 613 S., OPerg. m. handschriftl. Rückentitel., Das Werk erschien anonym in Bruxelles bei E.-H. Fricx. - Brunet IV, 396. Tchemerzine IX, 70. [Click Below for Full Description]

GEORGES, Pierre.
1623. First edition of a curious and extensively illustrated work on what the author calls a "horloge magnetique", a horizontal sundial with a rotating magnetic needle. He makes great (and dubious) claims for his invention: it can be used day or night, even when the sky is overcast, as long as one can make out the sun, moon or a known star. The magnetic needle did no doubt help one set it up at any location, as he claimed. The title-page notes that Pierre Georges is Chanoine régulier at the Congrégation de Notre-Sauveur, established by the archbishop of Toul in 1623 under Jesuit influence, and it also gives the Jesuit "IHS" with cross. Given that Jesuit association, the manuscript fragment used for the binding is particularly interesting, for it contains a text known from the Acta sanctorum (which is arranged by the Saints' feast days, in this case 25 July). With an early 19th-century 2-page note on a free endleaf with information about Georges, the dedicatee François Grimaldi and the book. In good condition.l Berthoud, Histoire de la mesure du temps 2, p. 348; Houzeau & Lancaster 11491; Tardy, Bibl. mesure du temps, p. 108. [Attributes: First Edition]

Stuttgart: Fischer / Müller & Schindler. Facsimile. Neuwertig! [Click Below for Full Description]

Toulouse-trained physician Jacques Ferrand (b. ca. 1575) defines the symptoms, especially the mood swings from jocundity to deep melancholy, that accompany unreasonable passions, and recommends treatments to control them, from diet and rigorous exercise to bloodletting. The Inquisition took issue with Ferrand even mentioning astrology, chiromancy, and magic--even though he disparaged their claims--and with his frank discussion of sexual health. Perhaps his biggest offense, in their eyes, was presenting erotomania as a physical disorder to be treated by medical means when the Church considered it a sickness of the soul curable only by God and his ministers. More latterly, part of the Rothamsted Lawes Trust, acquired by them in 1931. A superb copy. Harding 18. ‘This is the greatest early British bee book’ (Harding 18). This edition was the first to contain both the woodcut frontispiece and the 4-part madrigal which was an attempt to capture the piping of the queen at swarming time. Walker called it the most readable edition. An excellent provenance. Ron Brown O.B.E wrote of Cowan ‘What an outstanding record of service to British Beekeeping!’ and further that ‘The Rev. Charles Butler (1559-1647) has been called ‘the father of British bee-keepers’. Perhaps we should call him ‘grandfather’ and award paternity to Cowan.’ [Attributes: Hard Cover]
