Format 18x12cm. Faux titre, préface, 685pp. + table. [Click Below for Full Description]

Toulouse-trained physician Jacques Ferrand (b. ca. 1575) defines the symptoms, especially the mood swings from jocundity to deep melancholy, that accompany unreasonable passions, and recommends treatments to control them, from diet and rigorous exercise to bloodletting. The Inquisition took issue with Ferrand even mentioning astrology, chiromancy, and magic--even though he disparaged their claims--and with his frank discussion of sexual health. Perhaps his biggest offense, in their eyes, was presenting erotomania as a physical disorder to be treated by medical means when the Church considered it a sickness of the soul curable only by God and his ministers. [Propaganda Fide] Gregorius XV, Pope
1623. Bologna. Vittoria Benacci. 4to, (320 x 205 mm). 2 ff. Unbound. Uncut, minor foxing.- A very rare document relating to the Propaganda Fide, announcing the creation of the institution, and containing a brief outline of the reason for its creation and purpose –creation of missions, training of missionaries, charity, etc.; it is addressed to Patriarchs, Archbishops and Bishops. Although under the reign of Gregorius XV, this letter was given under Prefect Ludovico Ludovisi (1622-1623), nephew to the Pope andde factoin charge of the Vatican. The Propaganda Fide was instituted by Pope Gregorius XV (1554 – 1623) in 1622 with the BullInscrutabili Divinae Providentiae. The institution was aimed at evangelizing the peoples of around the world and stopping the propagation of Protestantism; one of its best-known achievements was the publication of dozens of vocabularies for the use of missionaries –mostly of Eurasian languages. As matter a fact, the activities and vast extension of territory under its jurisdiction made the Congregation one of the most important institutions within the Church. The first steps were marked by martyrdom and expansion to regions where no Dioceses had been formed. Very rare, we have been unable to trace any institutional copies.

Bees are also placed in this category, with advice given to the budding apiarist on the establishment of thriving hives, concluding with the revelation of 'an excellent secret' that provides a somewhat spurious method for reviving a swarm killed by the winter climate: 'dash the Combes, and be-sprinckle them, and besmeare all the inside of the Hive with Hony, Rose-water, and the juyce of Fenell, mixt together, and daube all the stone therewith...and be well assured that the first Swarme which shall rise, either of your owne, of of any … [Click Below for Full Description]

EERSTE PLATTEGROND VAN DE DERDE UITLEG VAN AMSTERDAM DOOR DIRCK CORNELISZ. SWART ?Amstelredam?, kopergravure vervaardigd in 1623 door Dirck Cornelisz. Swart. In de tijd met de hand gekleurd. Afm. 44,5 x 57 cm. [Click Below for Full Description]
