[SKINNER, John].
ESTC S100292; Knuttel 4205a; cf. Ogborn, Indian Ink, pp. 120-129. Rare third edition of an account of the "Amboyan massacre". In 1623 the Dutch governor of the island of Amboina had executed 20 men, among them 10 English merchants and factors in service of the English East India Company, the Dutch company's rival in the spice trade. The men were accused of treason against the Dutch governor, and after confession (partly obtained by torture) they were sentenced to death and subsequently beheaded. The English East India Company instructed John Skinner to produce the present account, which was first published in 1624 and is sometimes ascribed to Sir Dudley Digges. Included is an English translation by J. Wing of a Dutch narration of the event (originally published as Waerachtich verhael vande tidingen gecomen wt de Oost-Indien), followed by the English refutation. The pamphlet was reprinted several times and it would play an important role in the outbreak of the first Anglo-Dutch war in 1652, as Cromwell referred to the incident in his declaration of war.Heavily browned and the first leaves waterstained, mounted and shaved. Rebacked, with the original backstrip laid down. A fair copy.

Trostius, Martin.
Officina Cotheniana, 1623. Syriac in the classical Edessene literary form is still the sacred language of several Eastern Churches and is the language of this lexicon. The dialect in ancient times was spoken in the north of Syria and in Upper Mesopotamia around Edessa. Trost (1588-1636), a professor of theology at Wittenberg, compiled this dictionary and issued it two years after publishing his much-praised edition of the Syriac New Testament with an accompanying Latin translation; the Lexicon was likewise lauded, primarily for its completeness. This and Trost's Syriac New Testament are among the earliest books printed in Cöthen, Upper Saxony. => This is the sole edition of the dictionary and it is uncommon in commerce.

MAXIMILIAN I OF BAVARIA] / [THIRTY YEARS WAR] / STENGEL, Georg.
Ingolstadii: Ex officina typographica G. Haenlini, 1623. Hardcover. Near Fine. 4to [27 x 17.5 cm]. (17) ff., 388 pp. (recte 386), (7) ff., with misnumbered pages at pp. 203-06, 243-46 and 260-71, 1 full-page engraving [20 x 15.5, the platemark]. Bound in contemporary blind-stamped pigskin, raised bands, boards beveled, somewhat scuffed, clasps missing. Blue edges, small hole repaired on half title and engraving, ownership inscription of Andechs Abbey on title page, minor browning in some quires. An excellent and unsophisticated copy. First edition of a rare volume of prose and verse glorifying the military exploits of the Prince-Elector (Kurfürst) of Bavaria Maximilian I (1572-1651) by members of the University of Ingolstadt, as compiled by the Jesuit philosopher-theologian Georg Stengel (1584-1651). The Gloria Bellica is an important witness to the intertwining of princely power, university politics, and religious sectarianism at the onset of the Thirty Years War (1618-48). Published in the year of Maximilian's elevation to Prince-Elector (1623), the book seems to have been an attempt by faculty at Ingolstadt to secure his favor. The increasingly Jesuitical university would be frequently imperiled during the flux of the war and quickly identified Maximilian, himself educated by Jesuits, as an important military protector. Maximilian's central role in the German Catholic League had been essential in checking the power of the Protestant Union. The volume is especially notable for its full-page prefatory engraving executed by the Augsburg artist Daniel Manasser … [Click Below for Full Description]

Colluraffi Antonino
Andrea Muschio, 1623. In-4 (225x165 mm.), pp. (26), 255. Splendido antip. (allegoria delle virtù morali) inciso in rame, iniz. test. e final. xilogr. Bella legatura in piena perg. floscia, tit. ms. al dorso. Esemplare freschissimo e marginoso. 1623. FIRST EDITION. Title within typographic border. Some stains. Vinograd, Mantua 214.Lacks three leaves: The first leaf after the title page, which is the beginning of the Printer's Introduction. A photocopy of it is laid in. The other two leaves (Bet and Gimel) have been replaced by a centuries old handwritten version. Photocopies of these two leaves are laid in here as well. The title page has an owner's signature in Hebrew: Avraham Piscarolo. After the last leaf of the book proper, is an added three-leaf manuscript tfilat haderekh. The version that appears here is different from the one we commonly use nowadays. It starts with the phrase whose approximate translation is: This city is nearby and small and I will flee there. The front and back free endpapers have old inscriptions. Newly bound in attractive brown leather, gilt lettering on spine. The Mellis were a family of rabbinic scholars, whose name derives from the village of Melli in the province of Mantua. Yechiel Melli served as rabbi of Mantua in the seventeenth century. Besides the present work, he also authored a commentary to the Pentateuch entitled Sepher ha-Nimukim (Hirschfeld, Cat. Montefiore, Number 479-11). It is thought that in addition to his rabbinic and literary activities, Melli also engaged in banking. Tapuchei Zahav enjoyed wide popularity in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, going through several editions. This first edition was published by the author's son-in-law David ben Moses Portaleone. 3 p.l. (lacking the first leaf, a blank; title a little soiled), 143, 152-66 pp. Small 4to, cont. English limp vellum. London: N. Okes for N. Bourne, 1623. First edition of one of the great early English accounts of the exploration of the interior of Africa and the first to be published separately (others appear in collections); it is a classic account of the search for gold. Ghana, the earliest known empire of the western Sudan, first entered the historical consciousness of North Africa near the end of the eighth century but probably originated long before. Famous to North Africans as the "Land of Gold," Ghana (which, apart from its name, has no historical connection with modern-day Ghana) was said to possess sophisticated methods of administration and taxation, large armies, and a monopoly over the notoriously well-concealed gold mines. Ghana was the main supplier of gold in the trans-Saharan trade, which linked the Mediterranean economies that demanded gold -- and could supply salt -- to the sub-Saharan economies, where gold was abundant. In 1620, "Jobson (fl. 1620-23), merchant and travel writer...was sent as one of the supercargoes on the third of a series of expeditions up the Gambia River undertaken by a group of London entrepreneurs who had in 1619 been granted a crown patent to trade in west Africa. Although the area was already frequented by English traders, the first two expeditions to tap the age-old trans-Saharan gold trade, still known in Europe only from its terminus in the Moorish states of north Africa, had failed. Jobson and his companions reached the Gamb … [Click Below for Full Description]

CRILLON (Thomas de Berton de)]
Avignon, Imprimerie de I. Bramereau, 1623. in-4, [6] ff. n. ch. [Click Below for Full Description]

IACOPO (Jacques) CALLOT
S.l, S.e., (1623), 22x34. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
