Giacomo SARZINA (? - 1641)
Map from the very rare "Anfiteatro d'Europa" published in Venice in 1623. The book was written by Giovanni Doglioni and it was published by the Venetian Giacomo Sarzina. Together with the text there are one world map and 33 maps of Europe. Oddly enough, these maps were realized after those shown in Ortelius Epitome, engraved by Philip Galle, and not after the pirate edition published by Pietro Marchetti in Venice. These are therefore new plates, presenting minor differences with those of Marchetti. The work has never been reissued and is quite rare. Copper engraving, included in the text page which described the map, wormholes, otherwise in good condition. Venezia Venice G. L. King, Miniature Antique Maps, p. 106. 110 80

Taylor, John
The first work is a later edition, the rest all first editions. Printer's ornament on title-page, woodcut initials, borders of printer's ornaments at top and bottom margins. Small 8vo. Late seventeenth-century calf, paneled and tooled in blind, the spine in five compartments, old shelf label numbered 96 at head of spine; label frayed, corners bumped, lacking initial and terminal blanks, general soiling, staining, margins shaved close and fraying to right margin often costing headings and side-notes in part. The first work is a later edition, the rest all first editions. Printer's ornament on title-page, woodcut initials, borders of printer's ornaments at top and bottom margins. Small 8vo. "Like most writers, Taylor never achieved the recognition he thought his due. Having successfully constructed a comic persona as the rhyming waterman, it was an impossible challenge to be accepted as a serious poet. His achievement was none the less impressive. As a literary entrepreneur and showman he was far more prosperous in his heyday than most writers; few watermen or struggling poets were also subsidy men or had to pay ship money. Taylor pursued a successful literary career for over fifty years, demonstrating a remarkable range, facility, and inventiveness. He played a pioneering role in the development of nonsense verse, popular political journalism, and travel writing" (ODNB). This volume includes the following works: 1. [The Life and Death of ... the Virgin Mary]. London: G. E[eld] for J. T[rundle]., 1623. Borders of printer's ornaments at top and bottom margins; lacking A1,2, … [Click Below for Full Description]

GUENEBAULT (Jean).
A Paris Chez Jean Daumalle 1623 1A Paris, Chez Jean Daumalle, 1623.

MERCATOR, Gerard and HONDIUS, Jodocus
Amsterdam: Jodocus Hondius, 1623. unbound. Map. Engraving. Image measures 14.5" x 15.5". This fine antique map is the first printed map dedicated to the Arctic Circle and the North Polar regions. Derived from an inset of the Arctic regions in Mercator's great 1569 world map, where he first introduced his revolutionary projection, here the scope is extended to the latitude of 60 degrees to enable the depictions of the Frobisher and Davis' attempts to search for the North West and North East Passages.

California curiously appears north of the Strait of Anian and is labeled as Spanish Territory. Across from Anian on the Asian coast, Mercator labels the land of Gog. This most likely references the regions of Gog and Magog appearing in the Hebrew Bible or to the legend of horse-riding barbarians from near the Don River and the Sea of Azov, locked up by Alexander the Great behind gates surrounded by the 'Caspian' or the Caucasus Mountains.

Perhaps the most intriguing feature here is the mapping of the North Pole. Since no explorers at this time had made it anywhere near the North Pole, Mercator based his depiction on the legend that a large rock (the Rupes Nigra) stood at the pole in the center of a whirlpool known as Polynya, or Open Polar Sea. Mercator is believed to be referencing the Inventio Fortunata, the lost book dating from the 14th century which describes the North Pole as a magnetic island surrounded by a giant whirlpool and four continents. The continents are separated by rivers through which warm water from the surrounding oceans flowed. Although Mercat … [Click Below for Full Description]

Shakespeare, William
Original leaf from the Shakespeare First Folio. LOVES LABOUR'S LOSTThis is an original leaf salvaged from a derelict copy of the FIRST FOLIO, printed in London in 1623. It has been estimated that there exist but 232 copies (of some 750-1000 printed) of the First Folio, many incomplete. Wickipedia has a very good, brief history of the First Folio and I highly recommend it as a good overview if you are not already familiar with the book. I have been an antiquarian book dealer since about 1975 and although I have had material (including complete plays) from the Fourth Folio I have never, until now, had any material from the First Folio or the Second Folio. I know of no other leaves from these folios that are in dealer inventories (except the few that some dealers have bought from me). The collection of leaves I acquired was assembled in 1901/02. This may be a unique opportunity. The leaf measures about 8 1/4 x 12 1/2 inches (appx. 20.5 x 32.5 cm).The text is complete and perfectly legible. The leaf is age toned and stained with some minor creasing. The edges are worn and frayed with the top noticeably darkened. This leaf has a crown watermark. This leaf was compared to the same leaf in the Brandeis copy to ascertain correct folio. There are many typographical errors in the Folio and these differ from book to book. The text apparently was proofread while the book was in production. The Folio was assembled from gatherings of six leaves.

François VALENTIJN (1666 – 1727). . Copper engraving with modern colour (Very Good, original folds), 33 x 79 cm (13 x 31 inches).
- Jahr: Copper engraving with modern colour (Very Good, original folds), 33 x 79 cm (13 x 31 inches). Zusatz: This fine map shows the central islands of the Maluku Archipelago (Moluccas), the famed Spice Islands of Indonesia, including: Seram, Buru, Ambon and the Banda Islands. The map is the authoritative geographical view of the islands made during the 18th Century and was drafted by the Dutch adventurer François Valentijn, who lived on Ambon for many years. The main island of Seram (called here ‘Ceram’) was long overshadowed in history by the tiny island of Ambon (here ‘Amboina’), which during the 16th and 17th Centuries was the world capital of clove production. It also lay in close proximity to the Banda Islands, the only native source of nutmeg, which during the 17th Century was the world’s most valuable spice. Portugal was the first European power to establish itself in the region, during the early 16th Century. While it endeavored to exploit the region’s riches, it largely left the islands under the political control of their traditional rulers. During the early 17th Century the Dutch East India Company (the VOC) and the English East Indian Company (the EIC) and expelled the Portuguese presence. The Dutch and English soon turned on each other, as both sides were driven almost mad with greed over the islands’ phenomenal wealth in spices. The decisive event in the struggle was the ‘Amboyna Massacre’ of 1623, during which the Dutch tortured and killed twenty Englishmen in cold blood. While the event tarred the reputation of … [Click Below for Full Description]

PROCOPIUS of Caesarea
J. Jullieron for A. Brugiotti, Lyon, 1623. FIRST EDITION. folio. pp (xii), xxiii (i), 135 (i), 142, (xx). Roman and Greek letter in double column. Title in red and black, engraved device of sun with motto "Flammis Ipse Suis", fine floriated woodcut initials and headpieces, grotesque tail-pieces, eight small engravings in text, early French ms note on fly concerning Theodora, early shelf-marks on pastedown. Light age yellowing, the odd marginal spot. A very good copy, crisp and clean, in slightly later French calf over boards, covers bordered with double gilt rule, spine with raised bands gilt in compartments, 'MI' within hexagram gilt in each, a.e.r., upper joint and head and tail of spine worn. First edition of this important work by Procopius, (Byzantine Greek historian, secretary to Belisarius, famous general of the Emperor Justinian), his famous ‘Secret History’ which had recently been discovered in the Vatican library and edited for publication by Niccolo Alamanni. The text’s existence was known from contemporary sources which referred to it as the Anekdota but had remained unpublished. It covers roughly the same years as the first seven books of Procopius’ History of Justinian's Wars and appears to have been written after their appearence, in 550-558. The Palestinian Procopius accompanied Belisarius in his early campaigns in Africa and Italy, and was later made prefect of Constantinople, then capital of the Empire, in 562. His History of the Wars, is an account of the events of his own time, our principal surviving source for the first two thirds of Justinian's reign … [Click Below for Full Description]

(BINDINGS - BATEMAN). HAYWARD, JOHN
London: Printed by George Purslow, 1623. Featuring deeply impressed and vigorously gilt decoration, this superb early 17th century binding houses two of the more popular devotional works of the period, written by a man who experienced both sides of royal preferment. Best known to posterity as an historian, Sir John Hayward (1564?-1627) found himself imprisoned after his first work, "The First Part of the Life and Raigne of King Henrie IIII" (1599), offended Queen Elizabeth, as it was dedicated to (and seemed to support) Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl Essex, executed for treason in 1601. While in prison until the queen died in 1603, Hayward seemed to experience a kind of spiritual awakening, the fruits of which were the present "Sanctuarie of a Troubled Soule," first published in 1601 and frequently reprinted. After James I's accession, Hayward worked with William Camden and Sir Robert Cotton under Arundel's patronage; he became master of the chancery in 1616; and he was admitted to Gray's Inn and knighted in 1619. His additional devotional work, "David's Teares" (1622, the 1623 edition is found here), also went through numerous editions. The present immensely handsome English binding, the various surfaces of which could hardly be more lavishly decorated, seems in the particulars of its design and in its abundance and density of ornamentation likely to be the work of John Bateman (d. 1635) or possibly his son and successor Abraham, both of whom apparently occupied the position of bookbinder to the king. According to Maggs Bros. Catalogue 1075 (see their item #29), the elder Bate … [Click Below for Full Description]
