Seventh edition, and the first printed outside the Iberian peninsula. Published only one year after the first edition (Madrid). The last work by Cervantes, The Works of Persiles and Sigismunda is a romance which relates the ideal love and unbelievable vicissitudes of a couple, who, starting from the Arctic regions, arrive in Rome, where they find a happy ending to their complicated adventure. It was completed on April 20, 1616, just two days before his death and published in 1617 almost simultaneously in Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon, Pamplona, Paris, Port au Prince, Soria and Valencia. Persiles y Sigismunda stands in opposition to his famous novel Don Quixote by its embrace of the fantastic rather than the commonplace. While Cervantes is known primarily for Don Quixote, widely regarded as one of the foremost classic novels of all time, he himself believed Persiles to be his crowning achievement. This edition is very rare. OCLC locate only 9 copies in p … [Click Below for Full Description]

BORROMEO Federico - OSORIO Pedro de Toledo - Ducato di Milano.
apud Impressores Archiepisc.,, Milano. Esemplare perfetto a pieni margini in barbe. Importante e rarissimo. Brossura coeva cartonata muta, pp. 29, 3b., in 8° (17,5 x 22,5 cm.) [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Marcus Vitruvius Pollio
Title in a large architectural frame, tons of woodcuts throughout text. These figures are those from the Latin edition printed in Lyon in 1552. Brunet V, 1329. 9 by 6 inches. 386 of 391 pages. Missing three leaves from the back annotations. Large folding plate lacking 3/4 and defective. Insanely scarce in any condition. Title mounted to a new leaf. Waterstaining throughout most of the book. Marcus Vitruvius Pollio ( c. 80–70 BC – after c. 15 BC), commonly known as Vitruvius, was a Roman author, architect, civil engineer and military engineer during the 1st century BC, known for his multi-volume work entitled De architectura. His discussion of perfect proportion in architecture and the human body led to the famous Renaissance drawing by Leonardo da Vinci of Vitruvian Man. By his own description Vitruvius served as an artilleryman, the third class of arms in the military offices. He probably served as a senior officer of artillery in charge of doctores ballistarum (artillery experts) and libratores who actually operated the machines. De architectura, known today as The Ten Books on Architecture, a treatise written in Latin on architecture, dedicated to the emperor Augustus. In the preface of Book I, Vitruvius dedicates his writings so as to give personal knowledge of the quality of buildings to the emperor. Likely Vitruvius is referring to Marcus Agrippa's campaig … [Click Below for Full Description]

Schouten, Willem
Important narrative of Le Maire and Schouten's expedition westward across the Pacific to the Indies, during which they discovered a new navigable passage south of Cape Horn. First French edition, one of two issues of the same year "differing only in the preliminary matter and in some of the plates" (Sabin), published the same year as the original Dutch edition. The illustration is composed of nine engraved folding maps and plates including a world map (Shirley 297), New Guinea, the Pacific, and a map of the Strait of Magellan. The voyage was made under the auspices of the newly formed group of Dutch traders known as the Australian Company, set up to compete with the Dutch East India Company and to search for the elusive Terra Australis. It was of great importance for the future history of discovery in that it proved the existence of a passage from the southern Atlantic into the Pacific, south of the Straits of Magellan round Cape Horn, and therefore finally demonstrated that the supposed Southern Continent, contrary to the maps of Ortelius and Mercator, did not extend to the Straits of Magellan. "This is the account of Schouten's voyage around the world, during which Cape Horn, named after Schouten's native town was discovered. The leading citizens of Hoorn had helped finance the expedition by joining together under Isaac Le Maire to found the Campagnie Australe. The newly-discovered passage to the Pacific Ocean was named the Strait of Le Maire. Although published under Schouten's name, it is not certain that he was the true author of this journal, which was e … [Click Below for Full Description]

POESIE) STATIUS (P.P.).
Parisiis, sumptibus Thomae Blaise, 1618. 3 tomes en 2 volumes in-4. 4ff. 741pp. + 2ff. 588pp. 6ff. + 112pp. Rousseurs. Bon exemplaire. KEPLER, Johannes.
Johann Planck; Georg Tampach 1618; 1622; 1621, Linz; Frankfurt. First edition, an immaculate copy, the finest we have seen, of the third of Kepler?s great trilogy of astronomical treatises, following Astronomia nova (1609) and Harmonice mundi (1619), in which he introduced his three laws of planetary motion. The Epitome ?ranks next to Ptolemy?s Almagest and Copernicus? De revolutionibus ? [It] is the first systematic complete presentation of astronomy to introduce the ideas of modern celestial mechanics founded by Kepler ? The title gives no inkling that Kepler had erected an entirely new structure on the foundation of the Copernican theory, that he had rescued the Copernican conception, at the time disputed and little believed, and helped it to break through by introducing his planet laws and by treating the phenomena of the motions physically? (Caspar, p. 297). ?This work [the Epitome] would prove to be the most important theoretical resource for the Copernicans in the 17th century. Galileo and Descartes were probably influenced by it? (Britannica). Kepler ?hypothesizes that force is needed to sustain motion and that hence some force must be acting on the planets. This force, he speculates, originates from the sun, can act over a vacuum, and may be magnetic. In contrast to many scientists of the time, Kepler believes much of space to be a vacuum? (Parkinson). ?One important detail is Kepler?s extension of his first two planetary laws to all the other planets [they originally applied only to Mars] as well as to the moon and the four satellites of Jupiter? CODRONCHI, [Giovanni] Battista.
Mediolani [Milan]: Apud Jo. Bapt. Bidellium, 1618. Second edition. Codronchi is the author of the first important work on forensic medicine (G&M 1718) for which the present book on poisons and poisoners, originally published two years before it in 1595, had prepared the way. The treatise on forensic medicine forms part of a larger work, De vitiis vocis (G&M 3244), which is the first monograph on diseases of the larynx. This treatise too is foreshadowed in the present book, which contains a whole chapter on the voice (pp. 86-91). An extensive account of the present work is given by Thorndike who deals with its rôle in the history of witchcraft. Codronchi (1547-1628) was a physician from Imola, whose works according to Hirsch all show deep knowledge and originality. Nemec, Highlights in medico-legal relations, 190, including the present book in the note. Codronchi is not mentioned by Stevenson & Guthrie, History of oto-laryngology.8vo, 16 leaves (the last a blank), 248 pages, 16 leaves (the last a blank). Title with ornate woodcut border. Contemporary limp vellum, upper cover with original rope-twist loops but lacking toggles on lower cover. Tiny (1 cm.) tear in upper margin of a2. A nice copy.

Lipsio Giusto
1618. In-4 (23 cm) (32) 316. Frontespizio in cornice calcografica, testatine, capolettera e finalini incisi. Piena pergamena coeva.
Esemplare perfetto a pieni margini in barbe. Importante e rarissimo. Brossura coeva cartonata muta, pp. 29, 3b., in 8° (17,5 x 22,5 cm.)

, . . Knuttel, Kerkgeschiedenis, p. 242; Rogge, Remonstr. geschr., p. 96; STCN (2 copies). Very rare re-issue, enlarged with an index and several documents, of a history of the Dutch religious controversies that arose during the Twelve Years' Truce. The work includes an almost verbatim report by Bernard Dwingelo of the acts of the Synod of Dordrecht (1618-1619), which ended with the official condemnation and banishment of the Arminians, also known as Remonstrants. The main issue had been the Calvinist article of faith regarding the issue of predestination, which was rejected by the Leiden theologian Jacob Arminius (1560-1609). Arminius's more liberal views were opposed by his strict Calvinist colleague Franciscus Gomarus (1563-1641).Title-page slightly browned and thumbed, boards rubbed along the extremities.
