SELDEN (John)
[London: s.n.], 1618. First edition, third variant, small 4to, [6], xxii, [12], 491, [5]pp., title page in red and black, in this edition p.249 is misnumbered 149 and line 1 has "little"; contemporary calf, rebacked, red morocco label, a good clean copy with wide margins. "The most celebrated of Selden's treatises from this decade, 'The Historie of Tithes' (1618), marked a major refinement in his theory and practice of history. Dedicated to Sir Robert Cotton, it praised his 'inestimable Library', which assured 'a curious Diligence in search after the inmost, least known and most usefull parts of Historicall Truth'. The preface recommended the scrutinizing of earlier interpretations and of all evidence with a searching, but moderate philosophical scepticism, which helped to clear away unsound interpretations and to promote soundly based truth ........ A 'Review' at the end of the 'Historie of Tithes' provided a brief history of the Roman law to show how it could not rightly claim to have ruled even western Europe in an unbroken sequence and pictured William I, his barons, and those 'learned in the laws' (identified as 'the common Lawiers of that time, as Godric and Alfwin') gathering together as a parliament in the fourth year of the conquest to hear and confirm the 'former Laws of the Kingdome'. This vivid image of the historical triumph of the king-in-parliament appeared just in time for Selden's political career of the following decade. King James and his favourite, the marquess of Buckingham, forced Selden to withdraw Historie of Tithes from circulation, apologize to the … [Click Below for Full Description]

FLORUS, Lucius Annaeus
By William Stansby, 1618. JAMES II'S COPY? FIRST EDITION thus. [xxiv], 503, [3]. last blank. Roman letter, some Italic, text within box rule. Engraved architectural title border signed "Sim Pass scu.", [Simon van de Pass], small floriated woodcut initials, woodcut head pieces. Light age yellowing, first few leaves very slightly dust soiled. A very good copy crisp and clean in contemporary polished calf, covers bordered with a triple blind rule large blind arabesque at centers, spine with three blind ruled raised bands, joints and tail worn. C17th autograph 'York' on pastedown, possibly, James, Duke of York, later James II. First edition of Edmund Bolton's translation into english of Florus' Roman history in a high quality contemporary calf binding. On p. 503 Bolton signed the work with his initials "translated into English by E.M.B.", i.e. Edmund Maria Bolton, and also signs the dedication with his pseudonym "Philanactophil". Florus' history, known as the 'Epitome of all the Wars during Seven Hundred Years', is an abridgment of Roman history up to the age of Augustus with special reference to war. The style is rhetorical, and Florus is sometimes brief to the point of obscurity. His identity and names are not known for certain, though he is commonly called Lucius Annaeus. He lived in the second century AD and is variously identified with the Florus who was poet-friend of the emperor Hadrian. This work is often described as an epitome of Livy, and no doubt owes much to that author, who is sometimes quoted verbatim, but Livy is by no means the only source, and Florus frequentl … [Click Below for Full Description]

UYTENBOGAERT (WTENBOGAERT), Johannes and Bernard DWINGLO.
Knuttel, Kerkgeschiedenis, p. 242; Rogge, Remonstr. geschr., p. 96; STCN (2 copies). Very rare re-issue, enlarged with an index and several documents, of a history of the Dutch religious controversies that arose during the Seven Years Truce. The work includes an almost verbatim report by Bernard Dwingelo of the acts of the Synod of Dordrecht (1618-1619), which ended with the official condemnation and banishment of one of the two parties, the Arminians or Remonstrants. The main issue had been the Calvinist article of faith regarding the issue of predestination, which was rejected by the Leiden theologian Jacob Arminius (1560-1609). Arminius's more liberal views were opposed by his strict Calvanist colleague Franciscus Gomarus (1563-1641).Title-page slight browned and thumbed, boards rubbed along the extremities. [LONDON - PHARMACOPOEIA]. [ROYAL COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS].
Klaversma & Hannema 1179-1180; STCN (1 copy, lacking frontispiece). Wellcome IV, p. 365; WorldCat (5 copies). First and only edition of a Dutch translation of the London Pharmacopoeia, which had appeared in dozens of Latin (beginning in 1618) and English (beginning in 1649) editions. Although a slightly revised Latin edition had appeared in 1677, the Dutch publisher Ten Hoorn apparently based his translation on the 1650 edition, so that his readers miss out on the recipe for Irish whiskey. It nevertheless contains much interesting information for Dutch readers. Among the many ingredients used in the recipes were the wonderful horn of a unicorn, the skull of a man killed by violence (translated as "the skull of a man who died in good health"), twelve types of excrement (for which the Dutch translator used five different words) and fresh cheese (pp. 26-28). A list of other medical titles printed and sold by the publisher appears on the final pages. With a bookplate. Binding soiled and spotted, text with some spots and a few small holes; lacking front endpapers. A good copy of a rare pharmacopoeia.

GODEFROY (Jacques).
Johann-Carl Unckel, Francfort, 1618. Bel exemplaire.

Herodotus Halicarnassei
Oliva Paul Estienne, Ginevra, 1618.

HERODOTUS [c. 480-c. 425 B.C.]
Oliva Pauli Stephani, 1618, [Geneva]. Editio adornata opera & studio Gothofredi Iungermani., Folio. Pp. 6 p.l., 708, [30]index, [2]blank. Large woodcut device of the Estienne press on title, ornaments and initials. Four folding plates depicting the city of Babylon: the hanging gardens at Semiramis, the bridge of Babylon and the palace of Semiramis, an aerial view of the city of Babylon, and the Tower of Babel. Text in Latin and Greek in parallel columns. Bound in contemporary vellum, covers laced through, with old ink title on spine, lacking ties. Minor soiling and staining to binding with some wear to edges, small ink stamp on title, small (nickel-size) dark stain at top of ff. a4, a5, and a6, impairing the legibility of the text, but overall an excellent copy internally, with exceptionally fine plates. The 1618 edition of Herodotus by Paulus Stephanus is the third and last Estienne edition. It follows the first Henr. Stephanus edition, Paris, 1570 (Greek only); the second edition, Paris, 1592 (Greek and Latin, the Latin version being that of Valla, revised and corrected by Stephanus); and another edition published in Frankfort, 1608, by Gottfried Jungermann, which made considerable improvements on Stephanus' work by dividing the books into chapters, amending the life of Herodotus, and including the annotations of Sylburgius, numerous passages from Ctesias, a glossary in Greek, and an appendix regarding the overflowing of the Nile. It is this latter edition from which the present text is reprinted, with the addition of some remarks of Patus, and some emendations of the Lat … [Click Below for Full Description]

Apud Nicolaum Henricum, Monachii, 1618. Prima edizione. Testo latino. Cm.23x18. Pg.(22), VIII, 536. Legatura in mz.pergamena con piatti marmorizzati. Tassello in pelle con titoli in oro al dorso. tagli spruzzati. Capilettera ornati. [Click Below for Full Description]

Custos (Dominicus), 1559/1560-1615
Augsburg, Andreas Aperger, 1618. A collection of portraits of members of the mercantile and banking dynasty founded by Jakob Fugger (circa 1430-1518), each portrait accompanied by appropriate heraldic insignia, and displayed within an architectural or grotesque frame of impressive quality and size (platemarks 340 × 230 mm). On the versos of the portraits are printed brief genealogical notices apparently supplied by Marcus Henning (1561-circa 1622). The book has been long recognised as a valuable document for the history of costume, especially for women's clothing. Indeed, its most striking feature is the high proportion of women portrayed: nearly half of the portraits in this edition (sixty-two of 127) depict women, the wives and daughters of the Fuggers in nearly equal number.Custos, Dominicus Antwerp 1559/1560 - 1615 Augsburg Fuggerorum et Fuggerarum, quae in familia natae, quaève in familiam transierunt, quot extant aere expressae imagines. Blaeu Willem Janszoon (1571 - 1638) Amsterdam
Artist: Blaeu Willem Janszoon ca ; issued in: Amsterdam; date: ca1618 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 39 x 51; - description: Map shows total Bavaria; - vita of the artist: Joan Guilliemus Blaeu was the eldest son of Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1571-1638), and was probably born in Alkmaar in the province of Noord-Holland in the final years of the 16th century. He was brought up in Amsterdam, and studied law at the University of Leiden before going into partnership with his father in the 1630s. Although his father Willem had cartographic interests, having studied under the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe and having manufactured globes and instruments, his primary business was as a printer. It was under the control of Joan that the Blaeu printing press achieved lasting fame by moving towards the printing of maps and expanding to become the largest printing press in Europe in the 17th century.By the 1660s the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (or Atlas Maior as it had became known by this time) had expanded to between 9 and 12 volumes, depending on the language. With over 3,000 text pages and approximately 600 maps, it was the most expensive book money could buy in the later 17th century. The translation of the text from Latin into Dutch, English, German, French, and Spanish for several volumes created enormous work for those involved in typography and letterpress activities. It is estimated that over 80 men must have been employed full-time in the Blaeu printing house in Bloemgracht, not including engravers who worked elsewhere, … [Click Below for Full Description]
