PHARMACOPOEIA. [ROYAL] COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS OF LONDON.
Second edition of the first London pharmacopoeia, the first pharmacopoeia intended for use by an entire nation. "There were at the time official European pharmacopoeias, but these were enforced only for comparatively small territories. The College's product was intended to be standard not only for the London area but for all England and it was declared obligatory by the King. Representatives of medicine and pharmacy in Western Europe awaited its production with much interest..." (William Brocklebank, "Sovereign Remedies. A critical depreciation of the 17th-century London pharmacopoeia", in Medical History, pp. 1-14, January 1964).Even though the College of Physicians began work on the pharmacopeia in 1589, the first edition, when it finally appeared, had numerous errors and was withdrawn. This second edition, quickly brought out later in the same year, was corrected and had some 90 more pages, including a catalogue of simples and an index. It was even given a new engraved title-page, presumably to distinguish it clearly from the first.STC 16773. All editions of the first London pharmacopoeia are extremely rare; STC records 6 copies of this edition, fewer than any other. See G&M 1821, the first edition. Hind, Engraving in England in the 16th and 17th centuries, 1955, vol. 2, p. 205, no. 84 (the present engraved title, used for all further editions up to the fifth in 1639). Elstracke was one of the earliest native engravers in England, and the foremost English engraver of his time.

Seventh edition, and the first printed outside the Iberian peninsula. Published only one year after the first edition (Madrid). The last work by Cervantes, The Works of Persiles and Sigismunda is a romance which relates the ideal love and unbelievable vicissitudes of a couple, who, starting from the Arctic regions, arrive in Rome, where they find a happy ending to their complicated adventure. It was completed on April 20, 1616, just two days before his death and published in 1617 almost simultaneously in Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon, Pamplona, Paris, Port au Prince, Soria and Valencia. Persiles y Sigismunda stands in opposition to his famous novel Don Quixote by its embrace of the fantastic rather than the commonplace. While Cervantes is known primarily for Don Quixote, widely regarded as one of the foremost classic novels of all time, he himself believed Persiles to be his crowning achievement. On his removing to Florence he was admitted into the academy there, and devoted himself to literature. At Rome he entered the service of Cardinal Maffeo Barberini, with whom he afterwards went to France. After the death of Clement VIII he returned to his own country; and when his patron Barberini was elected pope, under the name of Urban VIII, Bracciolini repaired to Rome and was made secretary to the pope's brother, Cardinal Antonio Marcello Barberini. Bracciolini had also the honor conferred on him of taking a surname from the arms of the Barberini family, which were bees; whence he was afterwards known by the name of Bracciolini dell Api. During Urban's pontificate the poet lived at Rome in considerable reputation, though at the same time he was censored for his sordid avarice. Gerard Tuning
Lvgdvni Batavorvm Leiden: ex Officina Elzeviriana, 1618. First edition, posthumously published; small 4to, pp. [20], 928, [14]; printer's woodcut vignette on title page, woodcut initials and ornaments; contemporary unadorned full vellum, turned-in edges; some soiling and staining to the vellum, but on the whole very good and sound. Early ink annotations, underlinings, and references throughout the text. Sanchez, Francisco).
Frankfurt Berner, 1618. (16 x 10 cm). 189 (3 (2w)) S. Moderner Halbpergamentband im Stil der Zeit. Zweite Ausgabe seines erstmals 1581 erschienenen philosophischen Hauptwerkes, erweitert um "De litteris pereuntibus libellus" von Maturinus Simonius. - Sanches (1552-1632) "was one of the first to develop a full system criticizing the scholastic philosophy. Together with his contemporaries. he represented the new school of philosophic scepticism, particularly in regard to the natural sciences. Though recognizing the importance of Aristotle as a natural scientist, Sanchez opposed uncritical acceptance of his views and the prevalent unquestioning belief in his authority in philosophical and scientific thought. He taught that knowledge cannot be reached through the syllogistic method of reasoning employed by the scholastic philosophers; based as it was on certain arbitrary definitions, the validity of which Sanchez considered to be doubtful. Even though his influence was perhaps more negative through criticism than positive through creating a new system, his work together with that of some of his contemporaries paved the way for the system created by Descartes. His views were also taken up by Bacon and later by the rationalist philosophers and scientists of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries" (PMM). - Titel mehrfach gestempelt. AELIANUS, Claudius
I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Claudius Aelianus, or more commonly known as Aelian, was a 2nd-century AD Roman rhetorician and philosopher who was well-versed in both Greek and Latin linguistics. Aelian had only two well-known works - 'On Animalia' and 'Variae Historia.' The latter is a collection of ancient anecdotes and sketches that describe natural wonders and mythological customs. He describes death and burial customs, Greek art, dress and costumes, food and drink, famous athletes, pagan worship, fly fishing, and more! This rare 1618 printing is printed in parallel Greek and Latin. [Attributes: First Edition]

HONDIUS, HENRICUS
"America Noviter Delineata This important map was first published in 1618 by Jodocus Hondius. Cartographically, this map influenced a generation of cartographers and was the basis of understanding the Americas for the first half of the 17th century. When first issued the map was surrounded by four panels, figures on the sides and Views on the top and bottom. The plate was trimmed, removing the panels by Henricus Hondius c.1630. The map had a long life appearing in atlases up to 1665, This map is noted for its elegant engraving and pleasing layout, with fleets of ships and sea monsters, and two inset maps one showing the Arctic Circle and the other showing Greenland. The North Pole depicts Frobisher's theory of the Northwest Passage and the South Pole shows the long-held notion of the mythical southern continent. North America retains the peninsular California and the East Coast is beginning to take shape, although it still lacks detail in the mid-Atlantic region. In the Southwest the famous seven cities of Cibola appear on the banks of a large lake. In South America, there is a large inland sea and two engraved scenes, one of which details a cannibalistic feast. Two stylized insets of the two polar regions are enclosed in strapwork cartouches. Size: 37,5 x 49,8 cm (plus margins). The copperplate that produced this map was originally prepared by Jodocus Hondius Jr. in 1618.?This issue, known in three examples, has decorative borders on all four sides.?There is a 2nd state in c1629-30 with no decorative borders.? A 3rd state was produced by Henricus Hondius in 1631.?The map d … [Click Below for Full Description]

Schouten, Willem
Important narrative of Le Maire and Schouten's expedition westward across the Pacific to the Indies, during which they discovered a new navigable passage south of Cape Horn. First French edition, one of two issues of the same year "differing only in the preliminary matter and in some of the plates" (Sabin), published the same year as the original Dutch edition. The illustration is composed of nine engraved folding maps and plates including a world map (Shirley 297), New Guinea, the Pacific, and a map of the Strait of Magellan. The voyage was made under the auspices of the newly formed group of Dutch traders known as the Australian Company, set up to compete with the Dutch East India Company and to search for the elusive Terra Australis. It was of great importance for the future history of discovery in that it proved the existence of a passage from the southern Atlantic into the Pacific, south of the Straits of Magellan round Cape Horn, and therefore finally demonstrated that the supposed Southern Continent, contrary to the maps of Ortelius and Mercator, did not extend to the Straits of Magellan. "This is the account of Schouten's voyage around the world, during which Cape Horn, named after Schouten's native town was discovered. The leading citizens of Hoorn had helped finance the expedition by joining together under Isaac Le Maire to found the Campagnie Australe. The newly-discovered passage to the Pacific Ocean was named the Strait of Le Maire. Although published under Schouten's name, it is not certain that he was the true author of this journal, which was e … [Click Below for Full Description]

GRAFFENRIED (Johan Rudolff von)
(1618) VD 17 23:672916C. Poggendorff I, 936. [Click Below for Full Description]

Willem Janszoon BLAEU (Uitgeest 1571- Amsterdam 1638)
Bibliografia: Burden 189; Tooley, Mapping of America, pl. 169. Dimensioni 550x410. One of the best known and sought after seventeenth century maps of America. Blaeu's famous carte a figure map of America is regarded as a high point in Dutch cartography. LOUET (Georges), BRODEAU (Julien)

BORROMEO Federico - OSORIO Pedro de Toledo - Ducato di Milano.
apud Impressores Archiepisc.,, Milano. Esemplare perfetto a pieni margini in barbe. Importante e rarissimo. Brossura coeva cartonata muta, pp. 29, 3b., in 8° (17,5 x 22,5 cm.) [Attributes: Soft Cover]
