Sardi Pietro
1618. [Figurato Architettura Militare] (cm37x25,5) piena pergamena originale semirigida. All' inizio lunga dedica dell' autore a B. Lomellino.

MONUMENTALE OPERA STORICA CHE RACCOGLIE I FATTI SALIENTI DELLA STORIA UMANA DALLA CREAZIONE DEL MONDO AL 1618 DOGLIONI, Giovanni Nicolò. [Click Below for Full Description]

Willem Janszoon BLAEU (Uitgeest 1571- Amsterdam 1638)
Bibliografia: Burden 189; Tooley, Mapping of America, pl. 169. Dimensioni 550x410. One of the best known and sought after seventeenth century maps of America. Blaeu's famous carte a figure map of America is regarded as a high point in Dutch cartography. Jesuit Dominis King James Croatia
London: 1618. First edition of a polemic fierce attack on the Vatican, the Pope and the Catholic Church published anonymously by the famous erudite Jesuit theologian, Primate of Croatia and Dalmatia, Marco Antonio De Dominis (1560-1624). The book was immediately prohibited and placed on the Index. No copies located in the United States according to WorldCat. The work was issued in London following Dominis exile to the United Kingdom supported by King James VI and I (1566-1625). Dominis became a favorite of King James gaining considerable status within the Anglican Church. He published several anti-catholic works. In 1622 he repented and published a violent attack this time against the Church of England. He returned to Rome and was given a Papal pension. In 1624, Dominis was condemned of heresy. Sánchez, Francisco).
Frankfurt Berner, 1618. (16 x 10 cm). 189 (3 (2w)) S. Moderner Halbpergamentband im Stil der Zeit. Zweite Ausgabe seines erstmals 1581 erschienenen philosophischen Hauptwerkes, erweitert um "De litteris pereuntibus libellus" von Maturinus Simonius. - Sánches (1552-1632) "was one of the first to develop a full system criticizing the scholastic philosophy. Together with his contemporaries. he represented the new school of philosophic scepticism, particularly in regard to the natural sciences. Though recognizing the importance of Aristotle as a natural scientist, Sanchez opposed uncritical acceptance of his views and the prevalent unquestioning belief in his authority in philosophical and scientific thought. He taught that knowledge cannot be reached through the syllogistic method of reasoning employed by the scholastic philosophers; based as it was on certain arbitrary definitions, the validity of which Sanchez considered to be doubtful. Even though his influence was perhaps more negative through criticism than positive through creating a new system, his work together with that of some of his contemporaries paved the way for the system created by Descartes. His views were also taken up by Bacon and later by the rationalist philosophers and scientists of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries" (PMM). - Titel mehrfach gestempelt. Geneva: Pierre da la Roviere, 1618. 1618 HEBREW Tanakh Jewish Torah Nevi'im Ketuvim Judaica Geneva Roviere BibleAn exceedingly rare, early 17th-century Hebrew Bible published in Geneva. "From the 16th to 19th-centuries, non-Jewish printers issued a considerable number of Hebrew books in Geneva, mostly Bibles or individual books of the bible with Greek or Latin versions." (Ginsburger). Pierre de la Roviere was one of these printers; however, Roviere uses a variant of his name in this 1617-18 edition. He refers to himself as Peter Oak - using oak as an analogy to connote strength - and the name Roviere comes from the Latin of 'robur' mean - strength. This impressive Bible includes not only the Torah but other books from the Nevi'im and Ketuvim. Hebrew Bible
Pierre da la Roviere. 1618 HEBREW Tanakh Jewish Torah Nevi im Ketuvim Judaica Geneva Roviere Bible An exceedingly rare, early 17th-century Hebrew Bible published in Geneva. From the 16th to 19th-centuries, non-Jewish printers issued a considerable number of Hebrew books in Geneva, mostly Bibles or individual books of the bible with Greek or Latin versions. (Ginsburger). Pierre de la Roviere was one of these printers; however, Roviere uses a variant of his name in this 1617-18 edition. He refers to himself as Peter Oak using oak as an analogy to connote strength and the name Roviere comes from the Latin of robur mean strength. This impressive Bible includes not only the Torah but other books from the Nevi im and Ketuvim. Item number: #9062 Price: $950 Hebrew Bible Geneva: Pierre da la Roviere, 1618. UYTENBOGAERT (WTENBOGAERT), Johannes and Bernard DWINGLO.
Very rare re-issue, enlarged with an index and several documents, of a history of the Dutch religious controversies that arose during the Twelve Years Truce. The work includes an almost verbatim report by Bernard Dwingelo of the acts of the Synod of Dordrecht (1618-1619), which ended with the official condemnation and banishment of the Arminians, also known as Remonstrants. The main issue had been the Calvinist article of faith regarding the issue of predestination, which was rejected by the Leiden theologian Jacob Arminius (1560-1609). Arminius's more liberal views were opposed by his strict Calvinist colleague Franciscus Gomarus (1563-1641).Title-page slightly browned and thumbed, boards rubbed along the extremities. Overall in very good condition.Knuttel, Kerkgeschiedenis, p. 242; Rogge, Remonstr. geschr., p. 96; STCN (2 copies)..

[Click Below for Full Description]

America rare map - Hondius/Janssonius, 1641
"America Noviter Delineata" This important map was first published in 1618 by Jodocus Hondius. Cartographically, this map influenced a generation of cartographers and was the basis of understanding the Americas for the first half of the 17th century. When first issued the map was surrounded by four panels, figures on the sides and Views on the top and bottom. The plate was trimmed, removing the panels by Henricus Hondius c.1630. The map had a long life appearing in atlases up to 1665, This map is noted for its elegant engraving and pleasing layout, with fleets of ships and sea monsters, and two inset maps one showing the Arctic Circle and the other showing Greenland. The North Pole depicts Frobisher's theory of the Northwest Passage and the South Pole shows the long-held notion of the mythical southern continent. North America retains the peninsular California and the East Coast is beginning to take shape, although it still lacks detail in the mid-Atlantic region. In the Southwest the famous seven cities of Cibola appear on the banks of a large lake. In South America, there is a large inland sea and two engraved scenes, one of which details a cannibalistic feast. Two stylized insets of the two polar regions are enclosed in strapwork cartouches. Size: 37,5 x 49,8 cm (plus margins). The copperplate that produced this map was originally prepared by Jodocus Hondius Jr. in 1618.This issue, known in three examples, has decorative borders on all four sides. There is a 2nd state in c1629-30 with no decorative borders. A 3rd state was produced by Henricus Hondius in 1631.The map depi … [Click Below for Full Description]

URSINUS, Benjamin
Martin Guthius, Cölln an der Spree, 1618. First edition, exceptionally rare, of the book that introduced logarithms to Continental Europe; in particular, it was through this work that Johannes Kepler, in 'a happy calamity,' as he called it, became aware of Napier's epoch-making work, a discovery that enabled him to complete his great Rudolphine Tables (1627), "the foundation of all planetary calculations for over a century" (Sparrow). "The earliest publication of Napier's logarithms on the Continent was in 1618, when Benjamin Ursinus included an excerpt from the canon, shortened by two places, in his Cursus mathematici practici. Through this work Kepler became aware of the importance of Napier's discovery and expressed his enthusiasm in a letter to Napier dated 28 July 1619, printed in the dedication of his Ephemerides (1620)" (DSB, under Napier). Ursinus assisted Kepler with the computations for the Rudolphine Tables, and Kepler presented and inscribed a copy to Ursinus (Honeyman 1800 - this copy is now held by the Adler Planetarium in Chicago); in the inscription, Kepler calls Ursinus and Tycho Brahe the scientific fathers of the tables. "The [Rudolphine] Tables was far more accurate than its predecessors - its margin of error staying within 10 seconds compared to up to 5 degrees with earlier tables. Instead of providing a sequence of planetary positions for specified days (which Kepler did in his Ephemerides), the Rudolphine Tables were set up to allow calculations of planetary positions for any time in the past or future. STATIUS (P.P.).
46859 STATIUS (P.P.). Opera, cvm Observationibvs ac Cum Commentariis tam veterum 1618 STATIUS (P.P.). Opera, cvm Observationibvs ac Cum Commentariis tam veterum quàm recentiorum Interpretum.
