UYTENBOGAERT (WTENBOGAERT), Johannes and Bernard DWINGLO.
Knuttel, Kerkgeschiedenis, p. 242; Rogge, Remonstr. geschr., p. 96; STCN (2 copies). Very rare re-issue, enlarged with an index and several documents, of a history of the Dutch religious controversies that arose during the Twelve Years' Truce. The work includes an almost verbatim report by Bernard Dwingelo of the acts of the Synod of Dordrecht (1618-1619), which ended with the official condemnation and banishment of the Arminians, also known as Remonstrants. The main issue had been the Calvinist article of faith regarding the issue of predestination, which was rejected by the Leiden theologian Jacob Arminius (1560-1609). Arminius's more liberal views were opposed by his strict Calvinist colleague Franciscus Gomarus (1563-1641).Title-page slightly browned and thumbed, boards rubbed along the extremities. Overall in very good condition.

[Click Below for Full Description]

America rare map - Hondius/Janssonius, 1641
"America Noviter Delineata" This important map was first published in 1618 by Jodocus Hondius. Cartographically, this map influenced a generation of cartographers and was the basis of understanding the Americas for the first half of the 17th century. When first issued the map was surrounded by four panels, figures on the sides and Views on the top and bottom. The plate was trimmed, removing the panels by Henricus Hondius c.1630. The map had a long life appearing in atlases up to 1665, This map is noted for its elegant engraving and pleasing layout, with fleets of ships and sea monsters, and two inset maps one showing the Arctic Circle and the other showing Greenland. The North Pole depicts Frobisher's theory of the Northwest Passage and the South Pole shows the long-held notion of the mythical southern continent. North America retains the peninsular California and the East Coast is beginning to take shape, although it still lacks detail in the mid-Atlantic region. In the Southwest the famous seven cities of Cibola appear on the banks of a large lake. In South America, there is a large inland sea and two engraved scenes, one of which details a cannibalistic feast. Two stylized insets of the two polar regions are enclosed in strapwork cartouches. Size: 37,5 x 49,8 cm (plus margins). The copperplate that produced this map was originally prepared by Jodocus Hondius Jr. in 1618.This issue, known in three examples, has decorative borders on all four sides. There is a 2nd state in c1629-30 with no decorative borders. A 3rd state was produced by Henricus Hondius in 1631.The map depi … [Click Below for Full Description]

URSINUS, Benjamin
Martin Guthius, Cölln an der Spree, 1618. First edition, exceptionally rare, of the book that introduced logarithms to Continental Europe; in particular, it was through this work that Johannes Kepler, in 'a happy calamity,' as he called it, became aware of Napier's epoch-making work, a discovery that enabled him to complete his great Rudolphine Tables (1627), "the foundation of all planetary calculations for over a century" (Sparrow). "The earliest publication of Napier's logarithms on the Continent was in 1618, when Benjamin Ursinus included an excerpt from the canon, shortened by two places, in his Cursus mathematici practici. Through this work Kepler became aware of the importance of Napier's discovery and expressed his enthusiasm in a letter to Napier dated 28 July 1619, printed in the dedication of his Ephemerides (1620)" (DSB, under Napier). Ursinus assisted Kepler with the computations for the Rudolphine Tables, and Kepler presented and inscribed a copy to Ursinus (Honeyman 1800 - this copy is now held by the Adler Planetarium in Chicago); in the inscription, Kepler calls Ursinus and Tycho Brahe the scientific fathers of the tables. "The [Rudolphine] Tables was far more accurate than its predecessors - its margin of error staying within 10 seconds compared to up to 5 degrees with earlier tables. Instead of providing a sequence of planetary positions for specified days (which Kepler did in his Ephemerides), the Rudolphine Tables were set up to allow calculations of planetary positions for any time in the past or future. Parisiis, sumptibus Thomae Blaise, 1618. 3 tomes en 2 volumes in-4. 4ff. 741pp. + 2ff. 588pp. 6ff. + 112pp. (Larousse). SWANENBURCH, G. (WILLEM VAN SWANENBURGH). - BOONS, DV. (DAVID VINCKBOONS THE ELDER) - JANSONIUS, JOANNES.
Amsterdam, 1618. Primo stato. Incisione in rame all'acquaforte e bulino, b/n, cm 44,5 x 67,5 (il foglio), in lastra: 'Amstelodami Joannes Jansonius, DV Boons invent., G. Swanenburch Sculp., Anno 1618', doppio titolo in latino e in tedesco.
Bon exemplaire.

LUCAN
1618. [Classical History] ~ LUCAN M. annaei lucani pharsalia, sive, de bello civili caesaris et pompeii libri x Londini. Excudebat Richardus Field, 1618. 8vo. [12], 291pp, [1]. With an engraved folding map depicting Europe, the Mediterranean, and North Africa. Later blind-ruled calf, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece. Joints rubbed. Upper hinge exposed, occasional inked/pencilled underlining, gathering I-K protruding slightly from text-block, very light damp-staining to lower corner. An adaptation by schoolteacher and grammarian Thomas Farnaby (1574/5-1647) of Roman poet Marcus Annaeus Lucanus' (39-65 AD) Pharsalia. Also known as De Bello Civili, the verse epic recounts in ten books the civil war between Caesar and the traditionalist elements of the Roman Senate, with forces led by Pompey. Lucan's inspiration for the title is taken from the decisive Battle of Pharsalus, which secured victory for Caesar's forces in 48 BC - an account of which occupies the entire seventh book. Beginning in 1612 with the satires of Juvenal and Persius, Farnaby annotated the works of many classical authors (Ovid, Virgil, Martial, Seneca, and Terence) with the intention to render them more accessible for the classroom. Patrick Adamson
ont> Joannem Billium; John Bull : London, 1618. The important and scarce large paper copy, of the first edition of Patrick Adamson's poetry, rebound in a sumptuous morocco binding at the National Library of Wales. A very scarce work. With the errata leaf to the rear, and the uncommon three printed leaves of the Assertiones Quaedam. Present to only variant copies. This issue has the royal arms to the verso of the title page. Patrick Adamson was a Scottish divine. This edition of Adamson's works have been edited by his son in law Thomas Wilson. It includes for the first time, Adamson's paraphrase of the Book of Job in Latin hexameters. It is dedicated to King James I who, as James VI removed Adamson from office. Adamson was removed from his position as the Archbishop of St Andrews due to his conflict with the General Assembly who were strongly Presbyterian. Following many heretical allegations including the supposed use of a witch to cure himself Adamson was excommunicated. This ruling was later rescinded as the General Assembly did not have the authority to do this. Following the attempted excommunication Adamson was found guilty of charges such as 'falsehood, double dealing, erroneous doctrine' by the Assembly which resulted in King James VI withdrawing his primacy and transferring his episcopal revenues to the 2nd Duke of Lennox. Prior his being removed from his position Adamson has written Latin translation of the Lamentations of Jermiah and the Book of Revelation. Both are to this work. This dedication is a venture to revive Adamson's reputation from the misinterpretatio … [Click Below for Full Description]
