LOCKE, John (1632-1704). - Willem Corneliszoon SCHOUTEN (d.1625)
Paris: Chez M. Gobert, 1618. 8vo. 4 folding maps, 4 folding plates. (Signature "E" supplied from another copy). Contemporary vellum, manuscript title on spine, modern morocco-backed slipcase. John Locke's copy of the rare first Paris edition of "Willem Schouten's voyage around the world, during which Cape Horn was discovered and rounded for the first time" (Hill): a landmark voyage in the history of western exploration. Schouten's voyage was one of the great early voyages of discovery and only the third circumnavigation. Undertaken in 1615 and lasting until 1617, this important expedition succeded in its primary objective which was to find an alternative route to the rich sources of wealth in the Pacific. The Dutch East India Company had a strangle-hold on the two known routes: via the Cape of Good Hope and through the Straits of Magellan. A rival group of aggressive Dutch traders, formed the "Compagnie Australe", and eqiuiped the expedition with discovered and rounded Cape Horn, named after the Dutch town of Hoorn where the sponsors were based. In addition, the expedition explored the Pacific coast of South America, pursued the search for Terra Australis, and proved that Tierra del Fuego was not an island. Principle among the Hoorn merchant benefactors was Isaac Le Maire, whose son, Jacob Le Maire, was charged as the director of the enterprise. Jacob named the Le Maire strait in honour of his father. "The ship Eendracht, while crossing the Pacific, discovered some of the Tuamotu Islands, the Hoorn Islands, the Schouten Islands, and visited New Guinea, the Moluc … [Click Below for Full Description]

[RALEIGH, Walter, Sir] / [BACON, Francis]
London: Bonham Norton and John Bill, 1618. Rare first edition, first issue, of the defense of James I’s execution of Sir Walter Raleigh, written by Francis Bacon and with (according to Bacon) “very material” additions by the king himself. The work describes the circumstances surrounding Raleigh’s final voyage to America in 1618 with the purpose of locating a fabled gold mine, and includes the text of Raleigh’s commission. In the event, his expedition ended up seizing the island of St. Thomas and killing its Spanish governor, an ostensible act of war against England’s ally. Back in England, Raleigh, who had already been sentenced to death in 1603 on another conviction, was tried by a commission headed by Bacon and executed in October 1618. The English public was appalled: “To sacrifice to a concealed enemy of England the life of the only man in the nation who had a high reputation for valor and military experience was regarded as meanness and indiscretion, and the intimate connections which the king was now entering into with Spain, being universally distasteful, rendered this proof of his complaisance still more invidious and unpopular” (David Hume, History of England). The present volume is the government’s hasty attempt to justify the execution. Bacon, as a member of the council that had sentenced Raleigh, appears to have been the main author. In a letter to a friend he mentioned the work and the king’s input: “We have put the Declaration touching Raleigh to press, with his Majesty’s additions which were very mat … [Click Below for Full Description]

Leaf 14 wrongly numbered 12; leaf 59 wrongly numbered 58. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION. In eight discursos and a narración, Miranda traces the genealogy of the Zúñiga family, sketches Zúñiga's life and character, and describes the funeral rites held in Lisbon in his memory. After studying at Salamanca, Zúñiga entered military service in 1577. Following action in Italy, he was sent to Flanders and distinguished himself at the capture of Rosendael (1580). Appointed captain, Zúñiga became a trusted aide to the Duke of Parma. Miranda provides much information on Zúñiga's participation in the campaigns in Flanders and France from 1589-96, as Philip II sought to win the French throne through military and diplomatic maneuvers. In 1601 Zúñiga was sent to Lisbon, first as commander of Spanish forces there and later as Captain-General of Portugal, where his first assignment was to help plan the abortive Spanish invasion of Ireland. Preceding the Discursos are four sonnets in Spanish, including one by Juan de Torres Portugal and another by Manoel de Govea de Vasconcelos, a sonnet in Portuguese, and tw … [Click Below for Full Description]

Por Diego Rodriguez de Val,, Toledo, 1618. Bella portada grabada, 3 hojas, 189 folios y hoja de colofón. Encuadernación original en pergamino. Algún defecto mínimo. Palau 286867.

Selden, John
1618. Selden, John [1584-1654]. The Historie of Tithes, That is, The Practice of Payment of Them. The Positive Laws Made for Them. The Opinions Touching the Right of Them. A Review of It is Also Annext, Which Both Confirmes It and Directs in the Use of It. [London: s.n.], 1618. [vi], xxii, [12], 491, [5] pp. Quarto (5-1/2" x 7-1/2"). Recent period-style calf, blind frames to boards, raised bands and gilt title to spine, endpapers renewed. Light fading to portions of boards, corners lightly bumped. Title page printed in red and black. Toning, some discoloration and light wear to edges of title page and following few leaves, internally clean. A nice copy in a handsome binding. * First edition, variant A. (One of the eight variants, with all points indicated by Sweet & Maxwell). The History of Tithes, which was one of Selden's earliest writings, angered James I and the clergy because it questioned the divine right to impose tithes. Although it was suppressed by the Court of High Commission, the resulting controversy transformed Selden into a figure of national importance. His treatment by the church and state also encouraged his opposition to political absolutism, an idea that informs his later writings. Based on remarks in the dedication and on p. 449, Sweet & Maxwell believe this is not a true first edition. (The presumed earlier edition appears to be a ghost, however.) Paris: Michel Daniel, 1618. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Large 8vo., (4) ff., 1 folding plate, 90 pp., (3) ff.; homemade index in contemporary manuscript on endleaf, followed by 18th-c. ownership inscription. Bound in contemporary marbled calf, gilt spine with raised bands, red morocco title label, covers ruled. Small wormhole repair in gutter margin of initial leaves, affecting partial letters on a few leaves, and into blank margin of plate. Some waterstaining; lower corner of final leaves soiled and worn, corner of endleaf replaced. Very rare first edition of this illustrated work on the proportional compass, probably the first such work published in France, and indisputably the book to popularize use of the instrument in that country. The proportional compass was constructed by Daniel Chorez in 1616, the first known maker of optical instruments in France and an important instrument-maker of the period. It was 16-17 cm. in length and followed the basic design of Galileo's sector, but was a bit simpler, engraved with four scales-Lines of Equal Parts, Planes, Solids and Chords. Drake alleges that the first edition appeared in the author's Mémoires Mathématiques, but he is tentative about it because the only basis is a later statement by the author; Drake has not seen this 1616 edition. According to Itard in DSB, the first edition is 1618. (The NUC also records a 1564 Rouen imprint but Drake considers that this is a transposed date of 1654 or 1644.)* Jean Itard in DSB VI.271-2; Drake, tr., Galileo Galilei, Operations of the Geometric … [Click Below for Full Description]

A very good, clean copy, in slightly later French speckled calf, large crowned monogram gilt at centers of covers, spine with raised bands richly gilt in compartments, expertly remounted, corners restored, all edges speckled red. Rare first and only edition of this curious astrological work which Saulnier describes in his prefatory epistle, his dedication to Mademoiselle Louise d'Anssienville, as an epitome in imitation of Livy and Valerius Maximus. The work is a description of the globe and heavens so as to better understand divination, in other words a description for the purposes of astrology in the guise of a cosmology. "Nous commencerons par le traictŽ de la Sphere, comme estant la plus necessaire, pour en apres entendre mieux le peu que nous dirons de ce qu'avons promis" The work is divided into three chapters, the first and longest, entitled 'Traicte de L'Astrologie Naturelle' starts with a description of the size of the heavens and then describes the major constellations and the origins of their denomination. Georg Braun (1541-1622) and Frans Hogenberg (1535-1590)
Cologne: 1572-1618 - Frans Hogenberg (1535-1590) “Lugdonum” (Lyon, France) From Civitates orbis terrarum Cologne: 1572-1618 Hand-colored copperplate engraving with beautiful original color Paper size: 16 ½” x 20 1/2" Condition: 4 inch repaired tear in bottom left quadrant with repaired one inch area of paper loss at the bottom of repaired tear at bottom left paper edge; center binding crease has been repaired; discoloration along paper edges, overall in good condition. The views from George Braun and Frans Hogenberg’s landmark Civitates orbis terrarum, completed in Cologne between 1572 and 1618, are among the most beautiful and important images of Renaissance cities. The Civitates was the first extensive series of town views that treated its subject matter in an accurate and meaningful way. Earlier collections of town views were far more limited in scope, and often made no real attempt to render the subject city with any degree of realism being simply a record of the existence of a town. Certainly the striking beauty and accuracy of Braun and Hogenberg’s production was entirely unprecedented. Earlier collections contained no more than a handful of views, usually only of the more important cities, while the Civitates contained literally hundreds of views, including many of smaller towns for which no earlier views are known. Even for the larger, important cities, the Civitates is of the utmost importance to the history of their topography.

[London]: [s.n], 1618. FIRST EDITION, FOURTH VARIANT. Title page in red and black. Contemporary cambridge binding blind stamped, rebacked, text shows occasional browning; generally an excellent copy. Previous owners signature and old stamp of Aylwin Library on paste down. pencil list of catalogue entries by maggs, rosenthal, parke-bernet, etc. First edition, most likely the fourth variant listed by STC, of this early work of anti-establishmentarianism. "This book shows that the practices of the early church are inconsistent with the view that tithes are payable by divine right" (Marke). While the work was only published after being submitted to the censor, and never expressly denied the doctrine of divine right, it still caused great concern amongst the bishops. This led to the intervention of James I, who called Selden before the privy council to compel a retraction, and to furthermore forbid him to answer or defend his work in any way after its suppression. Selden (1584-1654) was an English jurist and legal antiquary. His earliest patron was the antiquary Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (1570-1631) to whom this work is dedicated. Perhaps due to the controversy of the present work, Selden became very involved in politics, opposing political absolutism. He took part in and instigated the protest on the rights and privileges of the House in 1621, for which he and several others were briefly imprisoned. He was later elected numerous times to Parliament, and played a major role in the impeachment of George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham.

Lubben, Eilhard
Amsterdam: Philipp II, Duke of Pomarania, 1618. Large engraved wall-map in 12 engraved mapsheets, each sheet approx. 420 x 540mm., in original outline colour. THE RAREST AND MOST IMPORTANT EARLY MAP OF POMERANIA is this majestic twelve sheet wall map published in 1618. It was the work of Professor Eilhard Lubben of Rostock University who had been ordered in 1610 to create the map by Phillipp II, Duke of Pomerania, who wanted a large-scale map that would be a comprehensive geopgraphy and history of the duchy. Professor Lubben spent 1611 and 1612 traveling throughout the country measuring hundreds of angles and distances, but had little geographical information to guide him. The only earlier map of Pomerania was a small work by Peter Artopaus (later used by Munster and Ortelius), though Lubben himself had also mapped the island of Rugen on the Pomaranian coast in 1609. After the map had been completed, the copperplates were decorated with noble arms, a genealogical tree, portraits (including a prominent engraving of Philip II), and forty-six town views (many of these towns are shown here for the first time). It was at last completed in 1618 in the Netherlands by Nicolaes Van Geelkercken, but very few copies were actually printed. Some were presented to the Pomeranian court, but the shortage of paper and the thirty years war prevented the printing of additional copies. Hence, no example from that 1618 printing has survived. Geelkerken's copperplates were discovered in the eighteenth century in Straisund (a town featured in a vignette on the map), and in 1757 the map was re … [Click Below for Full Description]
