Selden, John
1618. Selden, John [1584-1654]. The Historie of Tithes, That is, The Practice of Payment of Them. The Positive Laws Made for Them. The Opinions Touching the Right of Them. A Review of It is Also Annext, Which Both Confirmes It and Directs in the Use of It. [London: s.n.], 1618. [vi], xxii, [12], 491, [5] pp. Quarto (5-1/2" x 7-1/2"). Recent period-style calf, blind frames to boards, raised bands and gilt title to spine, endpapers renewed. Light fading to portions of boards, corners lightly bumped. Title page printed in red and black. Toning, some discoloration and light wear to edges of title page and following few leaves, internally clean. A nice copy in a handsome binding. * First edition, variant A. (One of the eight variants, with all points indicated by Sweet & Maxwell). The History of Tithes, which was one of Selden's earliest writings, angered James I and the clergy because it questioned the divine right to impose tithes. Although it was suppressed by the Court of High Commission, the resulting controversy transformed Selden into a figure of national importance. His treatment by the church and state also encouraged his opposition to political absolutism, an idea that informs his later writings. Based on remarks in the dedication and on p. 449, Sweet & Maxwell believe this is not a true first edition. (The presumed earlier edition appears to be a ghost, however.) . [Click Below for Full Description]

HUES, Robert. D[enis] HENRION, translator.
Paris: Abraham Pacard, 1618. 8vo (170 × 110 mm), pp. [viii], 184. Woodcut device to title, other ornaments, letterpress tables. Lightly browned throughout, old waterstain to outer margin of preliminary leaves. Contemporary vellum, soiled, the vellum perished or gnawed at lower inch of fore-edges of both covers, endpapers frayed. Old library markings, including stamp to title and verso of final leaf (Université Egyptienne). First edition in French of Tractatus de globis (1594), an important navigational work originally dedicated to Sir Walter Raleigh. Hues had studied at Oxford where he became acquainted with Richard Hakluyt and later, Walter Raleigh and Thomas Harriot, before taking part in a voyage to Newfoundland. In five parts, the book describes the practical uses of the globes designed by Molyneux and, especially, how mariners could find the sun's position, latitude, course and distance, amplitudes and azimuths, and time and declination. The fifth part describes the use of rhumb lines in navigation. The translation is by Denis Henrion, the Paris mathematician remembered for his edition of the works of Viète and for the introduction of the calculating device known as the proportional compass to France. Henrion's is a faithful translation with numerous interpolations of his own (indicated by italics). In these, Henrion adds several practical details to the methods of calculation but also takes the opportunity to advertise his Cosmographie, which was not to appear until two years later. At several points he affirms Hues' text while stating 'comme nous avons enseigné en n … [Click Below for Full Description]

[GALILEI, Galileo] GUIDUCCI, Mario.
First edition, thick paper copy (the Landau-Galleti copy), of this famous work contributing to the 'controversy of the comets' which was of great importance in Galileo's scientific career. Guiducci, who became Galileo's assistant in 1618, allowed Galileo to publish under his name the Discorso delle comete of 1619 which attacked Orazio Grassi's De tribus cometis (1619), a work which expressed an absurd theory of cometary motion and several other invalid scientific theories. Galileo used Guiducci's name partly due to his own ill health, and partly on account of the admonition he had received from the Inquisition in February 1616. Grassi replied later in the same year with yet another work entitled iLibra astronomica which contained personal attacks on both Galileo and Guiducci and deliberately misrepresented Galileo's opinions on comets as expressed in the Discorso delle comete. In turn, Galileo published his Il Saggiatore and Guiducci his Lettera al M.R.P. Tarquinio Galluzzi.

VERY RARE: according to American Book Prices Current, only three other copies have sold in the last thirty years: Honeyman (1979), Riccardi (1986) and Frank S. Streeter (2007).

Provenance: Bookplate of Baron Horace de Landau (1824-1903). Landau was a Hungarian citizen who represented the Rothschild bank in Turin, and who formed a large and important library in Florence. Stamp of the Galletti collection - a museum of Galileana, which included busts, portraits and books, formed in the 1870s by Conte Paolo Galletti in the Torre del Gallo, where … [Click Below for Full Description]

SUAREZ DE FIGUEROA (Cristobal)
Barcelona, Geronimo Margarit, 1618. Petit in-8, plein maroquin grenat, dos janséniste à nerfs, titre doré, armes dorées au centre des plats, double filet doré sur les coupes, large dentelle intérieure, tranches dorées (rel. XXe de Brugalla), (6), 370 f. [sign. (Bernard Sesé in Encyclopedia Universalis). L'ouvrage est cité comme une "source inestimable pour les coutumes et mentalités des Espagnols sous Philippe III et le Siècle d'Or". "Inestimab … [Click Below for Full Description]

Binding: contemporary full calf gilt at spine. Papercut redish at edges. Copy with slightly worming (no damageon thetext) and minor holes at spine. Giovani Battista Marino (Naples 1569-1625) considered the greatest representative of Baroque poetry in Italy, called by his name marinista. The Dicerie sacre (1614) is an anthology in the style of a chart of prose (sermons) much appreciated, reunited through various themes of classical literature – as huge sermons that have little to do with religion - applying the metaphors of classical mythology, a specialty mariniana widely imitated during the Baroque. The Dicerie Sacre are divided into three parts: 1. Painting 2. Music, 3. The Sky The subjects are pleasing to the modern reader by the eloquence and the aesthetics of human experience and artistic therein. The lack of studies and modern editions of the works of Marino is a case virtually unique among Italian writers, and considered embarrassing for the Italian culture. PROKLOS DIADOXOS [PROCLUS SUCCESSORIS PLATONICI]. - [THE CULMINATION OF THE FINAL STAGE OF GREEK CULTURE]
Hamburg, Et prostant Francofurti, Apud Rulandios, 1618. Folio. Lovely contemporary full calf binding with 6 raised bands to gilt spine. Double gilt line-borders to boards. Small paper label to foot of spine. Minor wear to extremities. Inner hinge a bit weak. Old engraved book-plate to inside of front board, and a small later bookplate underneath (Dampierre). Even browning throughout. A very nice copy. Woodcut printer's device to title-page. Woodcut head- and tail-pieces. Woodcut initials. Text in Greek and Latin parallell-columns. Some leaves uncut. (36), 526 pp.. Very rare first edition of Proclus' groundbreaking main work, "Plato's Theology", being the editio princeps of both the original Greek text and the Latin translation, together with the editio princeps of the original Greek text of his seminal "Elements of Theology". "Plato's Theology" constitutes Proclus' main extant work and is one of the most important works of Neoplatonism (second in importance only to Plotinus' Enneads); together with his "Elements of Theology", it is his most systematic philosophical work and it provides us with the ultimate exposition of his own system, which is the epitome of Neoplatonism. It constitutes a concise summa of the Neoplatonic system in its fully developed form and thereby also represents the culmination of the final stage of Greek culture. The present publication, which represents one of the single most important productions in the history of Neoplatonism, is edited by Aemilius Portus. Apart from the first - and up until recent times only - printing of the original Greek text o … [Click Below for Full Description]

SCHOUTEN, Willem Corneliszoon
Amsterdam,: Guillaume Janson Blaeu, 1618.. Small quarto, with nine engraved folding maps and plates, some light staining and a blemish in a few upper margins but a very good copy in period style crushed morocco, spine gilt in compartments between raised bands. The first edition in French of this rare and important book, preceded only by the original Dutch versions of the same year (Amsterdam and Arnhem issues). Very many editions were to follow. This is the celebrated account of the Le Maire and Schouten expedition westward across the Pacific to the Indies, during which they discovered a new navigable passage south of Cape Horn. The maps, and particularly the well-known folding chart of a largely empty Pacific Ocean, demonstrate the magnitude of the achievement of Schouten and Le Maire in crossing the ocean from east to west, in order to reach the Spice islands without straying into the territories controlled by the monopolistic Dutch East India Company.Schouten and Le Maire named Cape Horn when they rounded it in 1616, visited several of the Tuamotus, and were the first westerners to visit the Tonga islands. They then coasted New Ireland and New Guinea on their way to the Spice Islands and eventually Batavia. The importance of the book to contemporary geographical understanding cannot be overstated; it was 'the last seventeenth-century expedition to search for Terra Australis from the east' (Schilder). The voyage was made under the auspices of the newly formed group of Dutch traders known as the Australian Company, set up to compete with the Dutch East India Company and to s … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOTERO, Giovanni
Venice,: Alessandro de Vecchi, 1618., 1618.. Small thick quarto, with 32 woodcuts in the "Aggiunta" section; some marginal repairs in the "Aggiunta" and two of the leaves crudely coloured, inkstains to another; lacking eight text leaves in the main work and four leaves of index, but the "Aggiunta" section complete; old quarter vellum. First of two editions, both very rare. This wonderful book, printed early in the seventeenth century, contains a remarkable series of woodcuts actually prepared in the sixteenth century but not then published. Wormholes in the actual woodblocks that show clearly in the printing suggest that the blocks lay idle for a substantial time. These haunting images, partly the work of the artist Hans Burgkmair, represent the general European perception of the mysteries of the undiscovered worlds to the east and south. Woodcuts of the creatures likely to be found inhabiting these lands are accompanied by others of actual native peoples encountered on a real voyage, without much distinction being drawn between real and imaginary. These weird imaginings include numerous remarkable evolutionary fantasies such as the skiapod whose immense foot has developed to shield him from the fierce sun, and numerous permutations of man-beast combinations. The eighth part of this posthumous edition of Botero's chronicle contains these thirty-two sixteenth-century woodcuts, which depict "Monsters and Customs of the Indies, with their King including lively illustrations of them". Fifteen cuts portray monsters or "Prodigies", while seventeen illustrate actual natives of Indi … [Click Below for Full Description]
