"America Noviter Delineata"This important map was first published in 1618 by Jodocus Hondius. Cartographically, this map influenced a generation of cartographers and was the basis of understanding the Americas for the first half of the 17th century. When first issued the map was surrounded by four panels, figures on the sides and Views on the top and bottom. The plate was trimmed, removing the panels by Henricus Hondius c.1630. The map had a long life appearing in atlases up to 1665,This map is noted for its elegant engraving and pleasing layout, with fleets of ships and sea monsters, and two inset maps one showing the Arctic Circle and the other showing Greenland. The North Pole depicts Frobisher's theory of the Northwest Passage and the South Pole shows the long-held notion of the mythical southern continent. North America retains the peninsular California and the East Coast is beginning to take shape, although it still lacks detail in the mid-Atlantic region. In the Southwest the famous seven cities of Cibola appear on the banks of a large lake. In South America, there is a large inland sea and two engraved scenes, one of which details a cannibalistic feast. Two stylized insets of the two polar regions are enclosed in strapwork cartouches. Size: 37,5 x 49,8 cm (plus margins). The copperplate that produced this map was originally prepared by Jodocus Hondius Jr. in 1618. This issue, known in three examples, has decorative borders on all four sides. There is a 2nd state in c1629-30 with no decorative borders.  A 3rd state was produced by Henricus Hondius in 1631. The map depi … [Click Below for Full Description]

John of the Cross, Saint (Juan de la Cruz, San).
Alcala [de Henares]: Viuda de Andres Sanches Ezpeleta [i.e., Ana de Salinas] 4to. [16], xxxiii, 682 [i.e. 684], [48] pages, [1] engraving.. 1618 Saint John of the Cross challenges Luis de León for the title of Spain's greatest poet and most critics would unhesitatingly describe him as the greatest mystic that Christendom has known since the Renaissance" (E. Allison Peers, Mystics of Spain, 2002 Dover reprint, p. 23). In this stout volume are his three most important mystical works: Noche oscura del alma, Llama de amor viva, and Subida al Monte Carmelo. Supplementary matter includes "Relacion sumaria del autor deste libro, y de su vida, y virtudes" (by Fray José de Jesús María, sometimes wrongly attributed to Fray Diego de Jesús) and "Apuntamientos advertencias en tres discursos para mas facil inteligencia . . . de las obras . . . de Iuan de la Cruz . . . por Diego de Iesus." The volume begins with an engraved title-page by Diego Astor bearing the coat of arms of Cardinal Borja, the work's dedicatee; opposite p. iii and also by Astor, a full-page engraving shows the Saint before an altar offering his works to Christ; and opposite "fol. 1" (actually p. 1) of the "Subida" is the => emblematical engraving by Astor that represents the mystic way from humblest aspiration to the summit of Perfection. The text is printed in roman, single-column with chapter summaries in italic, and there is a typographic sectional title-page for each of the saint's three works. A detailed index completes the presentation. Provenance: Gift inscription on front free endpaper, "En recuerdo del año, fu … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bernard Alsop for Henry Bell, London, 1618. OF PARTICULAR ASTRONOMICAL AND ASTROLOGICAL INTEREST Small 4to.18 unnumbered ll. Black Letter with some Roman. Woodcut illustration on tp. of a comet, woodcut headpieces and initials. A very good clean copy in modern calf. Second edition of Abraham Fleming’s first English translation of seventeen chapters of Nausea’s Libri Mirabilium Septem concerning ‘blazing starres’, first published in 1577, and again in 1618, to coincide with the comets of those years. "He (Nausea) raises the question whether anyone can foreknow the future from marvels of rare occurrence and answers it in the affirmative. He doubts, however, whether marvels which are entirely natural, like the magnet attracting iron or the salamander living in fire, can be signs of the future, since they always act in the same way and therefore cannot be special signs of unusual events.", Thorndike. The work starts with a general description of ‘blazing starres’, their names, origins, and a catalogue of the shape of their trails: ('speare', 'sword', 'tunne', 'horne', lampe' a 'horse maine'). "I find some disagreement betweene Philosophers and Astronomers", Nausea writes, concerning what actually produces them in the heavens: some say it is the conjunction of two stars, Aristotle believes a comets is a dry vapour reacting with the upper region of the sky. Nausea then discusses "the good and evil which blazing stars doe prognosticate" citing past examples and referring specifically to the comet of 1531 and what its significance might be, and moves on to a discussion of the ‘star … [Click Below for Full Description]

LOCKE, John (1632-1704). - Willem Corneliszoon SCHOUTEN (d.1625)
Paris: Chez M. Gobert, 1618. 8vo. 4 folding maps, 4 folding plates. (Signature "E" supplied from another copy). Contemporary vellum, manuscript title on spine, modern morocco-backed slipcase Provenance: John Locke (signature and inscription) John Locke's copy of the rare first Paris edition of "Willem Schouten's voyage around the world, during which Cape Horn was discovered and rounded for the first time" (Hill): a landmark voyage in the history of western exploration. Schouten's voyage was one of the great early voyages of discovery and only the third circumnavigation. Undertaken in 1615 and lasting until 1617, this important expedition succeded in its primary objective which was to find an alternative route to the rich sources of wealth in the Pacific. The Dutch East India Company had a strangle-hold on the two known routes: via the Cape of Good Hope and through the Straits of Magellan. A rival group of aggressive Dutch traders, formed the "Compagnie Australe", and eqiuiped the expedition with discovered and rounded Cape Horn, named after the Dutch town of Hoorn where the sponsors were based. In addition, the expedition explored the Pacific coast of South America, pursued the search for Terra Australis, and proved that Tierra del Fuego was not an island. Principle among the Hoorn merchant benefactors was Isaac Le Maire, whose son, Jacob Le Maire, was charged as the director of the enterprise. Jacob named the Le Maire strait in honour of his father. "The ship Eendracht , while crossing the Pacific, discovered some of the Tuamotu Islands, the Hoorn Islands, the Schouten Isl … [Click Below for Full Description]

1618. Well-Preserved First Edition of Selden's Tithes Selden, John [1584-1654]. The Historie of Tithes, That is, The Practice of Payment of Them. The Positive Laws Made for Them. The Opinions Touching the Right of Them. A Review of It is Also Annext, Which Both Confirmes It and Directs in the Use of It. [London: s.n.], 1618. [vi], xxii, [12], 491, [5] pp. Quarto (7-1/2" x 5-1/2"). Contemporary calf with later rebacking, blind frames to boards, raised bands and gilt title to spine. Moderate rubbing to extremities, corners bumped and somewhat worn, a few scuffs to boards, front hinge cracked, rear hinge starting, a few cracks to text block, later armorial bookplate (of HHH) to front pastedown. Title page printed in red and black. Light toning to text, occasional neat underlining and a few brief annotations in early hand. A nice copy. * First edition, Variant F. (One of the eight variants, with all points indicated by Sweet & Maxwell). The History of Tithes, which was one of Selden's earliest writings, angered James I and the clergy because it questioned the divine right to impose tithes. Although it was suppressed by the Court of High Commission, the resulting controversy transformed Selden into a figure of national importance. His treatment by the church and state also encouraged his opposition to political absolutism, an idea that informs his later writings. Based on remarks in the dedication and on p. 449, Sweet & Maxwell believe this is not a true first edition. (The presumed earlier edition appears to be a ghost, however.) Based on remarks in the dedication and on p. 449, Sweet & Maxwell believe this is not a true first edition. (The presumed earlier edition appears to be a ghost, however.) Schouten, Willem
Paris, 1618. Contemporary vellum, manuscript title on backstrip. "E" signature supplied from another copy. Quite clean and neat internally. A lovely, near fine copy. In a half morocco and cloth box. Famed philosopher John Locke's copy, with his ink ownership inscription on the front pastedown. In front of his signature Locke has made the notation "b" which, according to THE LIBRARY OF JOHN LOCKE by Harrison and Laslett, was an inventory mark put into books in or about 1697 and not to be found in any books acquired after that date. Locke has noted at the foot of the titlepage that this is a duplicate copy. The rare first Paris edition. Undertaken in 1615 and lasting until 1617, this important expedition was the third complete circumnavigation, after Magellan in 1519 and Drake in 1577. The expedition was the first to round Cape Horn from the east, naming the Cape after the Dutch town of Hoorn, whose aggressive traders sponsored the voyage. In addition, the expedition explored the Pacific coast of South America, pursued the search for Terra Australis, and proved that Tierra del Fuego was not an island. Principle among the merchant benefactors of Hoorn was Isaac Le Maire, whose son, Jacob Le Maire, was charged as the director of the enterprise, and for whom the Le Maire strait is named. "Partly inspired by Quiros and motivated by Dutch trading zeal, this [voyage] was the essential precursor to Tasman's voyage; indeed Tasman made great use of Le Maire's mapping of the ocean. The Le Maire voyage, the last of the seventeenth century expeditions to search for the unknown continent … [Click Below for Full Description]

Contemporary full calf leather, remains of gilt ornaments on the spine. Edges and corners worn. Else a good copy of the rare and only edition of this fable book by Pieter de la Court the younger. With hand coloured title page. 16,5 x 21 cm, [20] 1-727 [1] pp. With engraved title page and 100 engraved emblems by J. Gole."Pieter de la Court (1618-1685) was an outspoken character in the Dutch political scene of the seventeenth century. As a follower of Johan de Wit (1625-1672), de la Court became unpopular when the republican experiment backfired. Sinryke Fabulen was a great opportunity for him to carry out his political ideas disguised as fables. This book is a beautiful example of the synergy between fable literature and Dutch emblematic structure. The stories each contain a picture, a Latin motto and a moral explanation.Other copies available: Sinryke Fabulen. Amsterdam, Hieronymus Sweerts, 1685. [Click Below for Full Description]
