Schouten, Willem
Paris, 1618. Contemporary vellum, manuscript title on backstrip. "E" signature supplied from another copy. Quite clean and neat internally. A lovely, near fine copy. In a half morocco and cloth box. Famed philosopher John Locke's copy, with his ink ownership inscription on the front pastedown. In front of his signature Locke has made the notation "b" which, according to THE LIBRARY OF JOHN LOCKE by Harrison and Laslett, was an inventory mark put into books in or about 1697 and not to be found in any books acquired after that date. Locke has noted at the foot of the titlepage that this is a duplicate copy. The rare first Paris edition. Undertaken in 1615 and lasting until 1617, this important expedition was the third complete circumnavigation, after Magellan in 1519 and Drake in 1577. The expedition was the first to round Cape Horn from the east, naming the Cape after the Dutch town of Hoorn, whose aggressive traders sponsored the voyage. In addition, the expedition explored the Pacific coast of South America, pursued the search for Terra Australis, and proved that Tierra del Fuego was not an island. Principle among the merchant benefactors of Hoorn was Isaac Le Maire, whose son, Jacob Le Maire, was charged as the director of the enterprise, and for whom the Le Maire strait is named. "Partly inspired by Quiros and motivated by Dutch trading zeal, this [voyage] was the essential precursor to Tasman's voyage; indeed Tasman made great use of Le Maire's mapping of the ocean. The Le Maire voyage, the last of the seventeenth century expeditions to search for the unknown continent … [Click Below for Full Description]

Contemporary full calf leather, remains of gilt ornaments on the spine. Edges and corners worn. Else a good copy of the rare and only edition of this fable book by Pieter de la Court the younger. With hand coloured title page. 16,5 x 21 cm, [20] 1-727 [1] pp. With engraved title page and 100 engraved emblems by J. Gole."Pieter de la Court (1618-1685) was an outspoken character in the Dutch political scene of the seventeenth century. As a follower of Johan de Wit (1625-1672), de la Court became unpopular when the republican experiment backfired. Sinryke Fabulen was a great opportunity for him to carry out his political ideas disguised as fables. This book is a beautiful example of the synergy between fable literature and Dutch emblematic structure. The stories each contain a picture, a Latin motto and a moral explanation.Other copies available: Sinryke Fabulen. Amsterdam, Hieronymus Sweerts, 1685. [Click Below for Full Description]

RICCI (Mathieu)] TRIGAULT (Nicolas),
Title-page professionnally repaired, some marginal worn holes, tear (no loss) to the folding plate, one leaf missing (pp. 861-862), restoration work done to spine ends, unreadable gilt title.
[GRASSI, Orazio]
Engraved title vignette of one of the 1618 comets in the constellation of Libra, with large historiated initials and text diagrams. Antique calf in a contemporary style with gilt borders and gilt - ornamented spine; overall in superb condition. First edition of Grassi?s extraordinarily important and bitter attack on Galileo?s theory of the nature of comets, later inspiring Il Saggiatore. The scientists? famous dispute started the prior year with Grassi?s De tribus cometis, which Galileo (using the alias of his assistant Guiducci) followed up with his provocative Discorso della comete (1619). Grassi responded (under the pseudonym Lothario Sarsi) with this publication of Libra astronomica, in which he strongly defends the ideas of Tycho Brahe and the Jesuits. Galileo went on to publish his polemic and rhetorical masterpiece, Il Saggiatore, as a direct reply to this work. Grassi (1583 - 1654) was a Jesuit mathematician who taught at the Collegio Romano. This controversy ruined his relationship with Galileo, and earned his adversary the ire of the entire Collegio Romano ?" a major factor in his later difficulties with the Inquisition.

EUSTATHIUS MACREMBOLITES & PARTHENIUS.
Leiden (Lugduni Batavorum), Ex officina Iacobi Marci, 1618.. 8vo: (IV),378 p. 19th century overlapping vellum. 14.5 cm (Ref: STCN, only 1 copy; Hoffmann 2,115 & 3,43; Schweiger 1,123 & 223; Ebert 7167; Graesse 2,527; not in Brunet) (Details: Back gilt and edges gilt; printer's device on title) (Condition: Vellum on the lower board slightly damaged by tiny wormholes; 2 hardly visible pinpoint wormholes in the spine; some slight foxing) (Note: Almost nothing is known about the byzantine author Eustathius Macrembolites. He wrote a prose romance Hysmine & Hysminias ca. 1200. The 'editio princeps' was published in 1617 in Paris by Gilbertus Gaulminus Molinensis. The Greek text is accompanied there by his Latin translation. In the introductory letter (Lectori S.) to this Latin edition of 1618 no translator is mentioned. He must however be the translator of the 'editio princeps', for it is stated there that the translation is of recent date. The book offers texts of authors 'quos docti viri Romana lingua nuper loqui fecerunt'. (p. *2 recto) The liber of Parthenius (first century B.C.) was translated by Ianus Cornarius Zuiccauiensis (Johann Cornarius von Zwickau), 1500-1558, and first published in Basel in 1513.

BOTERO, Giovanni
Venice: Alessandro de Vecchi, 1618, 1618. Small thick quarto, with 32 woodcuts in the "Aggiunta" section; some marginal repairs in the "Aggiunta" and two of the leaves crudely coloured, inkstains to another; lacking eight text leaves in the main work and four leaves of index, but the "Aggiunta" section complete; old quarter vellum. With the extraordinary woodcuts of "prodigies" of the southern world. First of two editions, both very rare. This wonderful book, printed early in the seventeenth century, contains a remarkable series of woodcuts actually prepared in the sixteenth century but not then published. Wormholes in the actual woodblocks that show clearly in the printing suggest that the blocks lay idle for a substantial time. These haunting images, partly the work of the artist Hans Burgkmair, represent the general European perception of the mysteries of the undiscovered worlds to the east and south. Woodcuts of the creatures likely to be found inhabiting these lands are accompanied by others of actual native peoples encountered on a real voyage, without much distinction being drawn between real and imaginary. These weird imaginings include numerous remarkable evolutionary fantasies such as the skiapod whose immense foot has developed to shield him from the fierce sun, and numerous permutations of man-beast combinations. The eighth part of this posthumous edition of Botero's chronicle contains these thirty-two sixteenth-century woodcuts, which depict "Monsters and Customs of the Indies, with their King including lively illustrations of them". Fifteen cuts portray monster … [Click Below for Full Description]
