(AFHAKKER, Aegidius.) Henotikon [=in greece] sive pacificatorium dissecti Belgii, in quo post historicam relationem origines & progressus eorum dissidiorum quae in foederatis Belgii provinciis Remonstrantes et Contra-Remonstrantes per annos aliquot exagitarunt, vera inquiritur ratio dissensiones istas componendi, & solidam in religionis negotio concordiam ineundi.
Editio secunda, ab ipso authore aucta & emendata. Oberursel, Wendelinus Junghen, 1618. 8vo. (16),+ 462,+ (1). Some spotting. Closely cut in upper margin, several pages with partly loss of pagina and headline. Early 18th-century half calf, gilt spine with raised bands and red label, red edges. From the library of Biby in Södermanland, Sweden. VD17 12:110851W. Second edition, published the same year as the first but with a slightly different title. Aegidius Afhakker from Wreeswijk was professor in Theology at the university of Cologne. This is a history of the religious quarrel between the Remonstrants, that is the Dutch Protestants, who, after the death of Jacobus Arminius, maintained the views associated with his name, and the Calvinist church (Contraremonstrats). Afhakker is on the Calvinist side. The remonstrantes were ready to negotiate peace with Spain which the calvinists were not, so it also become a political issue. In 1618-19 the Synod of Dordrecht, with the support of Maurice of Orange, expelled thirteen Arminian pastors headed by Simon Episcopius and established the victory of the Calvinist church. One of the more famous remonstrantes who was imprisoned was Hugo Grotius. An exile community was founded in Antwerp in 1619 and after the death of Maurice of Orange in 1625 they were allowed to return. Wendelin Junghen was the third printer active in Oberursel (Ursellis) in Hessen.

"America Noviter Delineata"This important map was first published in 1618 by Jodocus Hondius. Cartographically, this map influenced a generation of cartographers and was the basis of understanding the Americas for the first half of the 17th century. When first issued the map was surrounded by four panels, figures on the sides and Views on the top and bottom. The plate was trimmed, removing the panels by Henricus Hondius c.1630. The map had a long life appearing in atlases up to 1665,This map is noted for its elegant engraving and pleasing layout, with fleets of ships and sea monsters, and two inset maps one showing the Arctic Circle and the other showing Greenland. The North Pole depicts Frobisher's theory of the Northwest Passage and the South Pole shows the long-held notion of the mythical southern continent. North America retains the peninsular California and the East Coast is beginning to take shape, although it still lacks detail in the mid-Atlantic region. In the Southwest the famous seven cities of Cibola appear on the banks of a large lake. In South America, there is a large inland sea and two engraved scenes, one of which details a cannibalistic feast. Two stylized insets of the two polar regions are enclosed in strapwork cartouches. Size: 37,5 x 49,8 cm (plus margins). The copperplate that produced this map was originally prepared by Jodocus Hondius Jr. in 1618. This issue, known in three examples, has decorative borders on all four sides. There is a 2nd state in c1629-30 with no decorative borders. A 3rd state was produced by Henricus Hondius in 1631. TAYLOR John
1618. First Edition . TAYLOR, John. The Pennyles Pilgrimage, or The Money-lesse Perambulation, of John Taylor, Alias the kings Majesties Water-Poet. How He Trevailed on Foot from London to Edenborough in Scotland, Not Carrying Any Money To or Fro, Neither Begging, Borrow or Asking Meate, Drinke or Lodging. London: Printed by Edw: All de, at the charges of the Author, 1618. Slim, square octavo, early 20th-century full brown morocco, marbled endpapers; pp. [54]. $4800.First edition of Taylor’s narrative of his travels in Scotland as a man without means, told in poetry and prose, handsomely bound by Zaehnsdorf.John Taylor was widely known as “The Water-Poet,” due to his apprenticeship to a waterman, later service in the Essex fleet, and career as a Thames waterman, combined with his reputation as a prolific pamphleteer. Perhaps inspired by Ben Jonson’s travels, Taylor undertook a journey that led to the completion of this work. “In 1618, he undertook to travel on foot from London to Edinburgh without taking a penny in his pocket, nor ‘begging, borrowing, or asking meat, drink, or lodging.’ He went, however, far beyond Edinburgh, penetrating even to the wilds of Braemar, and there he became the guest of the Earl of Mar at a hunting encampment among the hills. The sport inspired him with two sonnets. On his return to Leith he met Ben Jonson, who, although suspecting that Taylor’s intention might be to turn his own expedition into ridicule, gave him a piece of gold ‘of two-and-twenty shillings’ wherewith to drink his health in England. Having previously obtained 1600 names for hi … [Click Below for Full Description]

SCHOUTEN, Willem Corneliszoon.
Amsterdam: Guillaume Janson Blaeu, 1618. Small quarto, with nine engraved folding maps and plates, in period style crushed morocco, spine gilt in compartments between raised bands. The first edition in French of this rare and important book, preceded only by the original Dutch versions of the same year (Amsterdam and Arnhem issues). Very many editions were to follow. This is the celebrated account of the Le Maire and Schouten expedition westward across the Pacific to the Indies, during which they discovered a new navigable passage south of Cape Horn. The maps, and particularly the well-known folding chart of a largely empty Pacific Ocean, demonstrate the magnitude of the achievement of Schouten and Le Maire in crossing the ocean from east to west, in order to reach the Spice islands without straying into the territories controlled by the monopolistic Dutch East India Company.Schouten and Le Maire named Cape Horn when they rounded it in 1616, visited several of the Tuamotus, and were the first westerners to visit the Tonga islands. They then coasted New Ireland and New Guinea on their way to the Spice Islands and eventually Batavia. The importance of the book to contemporary geographical understanding cannot be overstated; it was 'the last seventeenth-century expedition to search for Terra Australis from the east' (Schilder). The voyage was made under the auspices of the newly formed group of Dutch traders known as the Australian Company, set up to compete with the Dutch East India Company and to search for the elusive Terra Australis. It was of great importance for the future … [Click Below for Full Description]

Catarino DOINO (att. Prima metà del XVII sec.)
[Click Below for Full Description]
