This task was completed in 1637 and a contemp. print of the occasion is inserted with the Bible. Just as the 'Luther Bible' as well as the 'King James Bible' had a major influence on both the literature and art of both Germany and England, so the 'Statenbijbel' as this became known, had a major effect on the Dutch poets, writers and culture in Holland with artists such as Rembrandt being inspired by biblical motives. A fine example of early Dutch binding, Condition: binding professionally restored, inside some light yellow foxing, but overall the book in good condition. Ex Libris from Christiani Caroli Bunsen. Addionally ex Libris: Ex Bibliotheca Danielis Wilhelmi Nebelii - old owner entry on the third empty page in the beginning: Linck 1751?

LA BIGNE, Marguerin de (Hrsg).
Köln, Anton Hieratus 1618. Bautz IV, 914-915; VD17, 23:625877R (Tl. IV) u. VD17, 23:625879F (Tl. [Click Below for Full Description]

Selden, John
1618 - Well-Preserved First Edition of Selden's Tithes Selden, John [1584-1654]. The Historie of Tithes, That is, The Practice of Payment of Them. The Positive Laws Made for Them. The Opinions Touching the Right of Them. A Review of It is Also Annext, Which Both Confirmes It and Directs in the Use of It. [London: s.n.], 1618. [vi], xxii, [12], 491, [5] pp. Quarto (7-1/2" x 5-1/2"). Recent period-style calf, blind frames to boards, raised bands and gilt title to spine, endpapers renewed. Light fading to portions of boards, corners lightly bumped. Title page printed in red and black. Toning, some discoloration and light wear to edges of title page and following few leaves, internally clean. A nice copy in a handsome binding. $650. * First edition, variant A. (One of the eight variants, with all points indicated by Sweet & Maxwell). The History of Tithes, which was one of Selden's earliest writings, angered James I and the clergy because it questioned the divine right to impose tithes. Although it was suppressed by the Court of High Commission, the resulting controversy transformed Selden into a figure of national importance. His treatment by the church and state also encouraged his opposition to political absolutism, an idea that informs his later writings. Based on remarks in the dedication and on p. 449, Sweet & Maxwell believe this is not a true first edition. (The presumed earlier edition appears to be a ghost, however.) MARCUS, Jacobus.
Atlas van Stolk 1027 note; STCN (4 copies); WorldCat (5 copies); cf. Hollstein XXXVIII, C. J. Visscher 116a-120a, 122a-123a (8 views); Muller, Hist. prenten, suppl., 1285B; Simoni, D38. The most complete copy we have seen of the 1618 edition of a rare book of noteworthy sights, views, and scenes from daily life and from trade and industry in the Netherlands (primarily Holland). It was intended in part for students to use as an album amicorum. The plates include salting and smoking haring, ship-building, making hemp rope ("cannabis" in Holland in 1618!), Dutch peasants, ice skating, wind-powered and horse-drawn ice sledges, wind-powered carts on the beach and many more. One copy of this edition at Amsterdam University has exactly the same plates as the present, while another copy there, and copies at Leiden University and the Pierpont Morgan Library, have fewer. The heraldic plates vary even more from copy to copy and were probably assembled according to the wishes (and pocketbook) of the buyer. Ours has 8, the Van Stolk copy of the undated edition has 4 and the most complete Leiden copy of the 1616 edition has 7, but each has heraldic plates not in the others.

First edition, posthumously published; small 4to, pp. [20], 928, [14]; printer's woodcut vignette on title page, woodcut initials and ornaments; contemporary unadorned full vellum, turned-in edges; some soiling and staining to the vellum, but on the whole very good and sound. Early ink annotations, underlinings, and references throughout the text. This copy with an attractive watercolor (collage) pasted to front pastedown, which is subtly overpainted to make it seem as if it were a painting made directly into the book. Besides the usual European herbs and medicinal plants, the book describes and illustrates mushrooms, fruit trees and other trees, as well as tropical peppers, cacti, fruits, nuts, tobacco, papyrus, etc., and even a coral. It made an important contribution to systematic botany by defining the parts of plants in general. The Cruydt-Boeck, not to be confused with the Cruydeboeck first published in 1554, was largely a Dutch translation of the Stirpium historiae pemptades sex, libri XXX, first published by Plantin at Antwerp in 1583. The Stirpium represents Dodoens's best and last great work: a monumental botanical study divided into six large sections, each containing five books, with the plants classified in 26 groups. [ROYAL COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS].
Klaversma & Hannema 1179-1180; STCN (1 copy, lacking frontispiece). Wellcome IV, p. 365; WorldCat (5 copies). First and only edition of a Dutch translation of the London Pharmacopoeia, which had appeared in dozens of Latin (beginning in 1618) and English (beginning in 1649) editions. Although a slightly revised Latin edition had appeared in 1677, the Dutch publisher Ten Hoorn apparently based his translation on the 1650 edition, so that his readers miss out on the recipe for Irish whiskey. It nevertheless contains much interesting information for Dutch readers. Among the many ingredients used in the recipes were the wonderful horn of a unicorn, the skull of a man killed by violence (translated as "the skull of a man who died in good health"), twelve types of excrement (for which the Dutch translator used five different words) and fresh cheese (pp. 26-28). A list of other medical titles printed and sold by the publisher appears on the final pages. With a bookplate. Binding soiled and spotted, text with some spots and a few small holes; lacking front endpapers. A good copy of a rare pharmacopoeia.

Friaul, Gradisca d?Isonzo, Friauler Krieg, Istrien, Uskoken -:
Ohne Ort, , 1618. - 4°, circa 19,8 x 14,8 cm. 39 SS. Pappe d. Zt. "VD17 23:237271R. [Click Below for Full Description]

Braun, Georg - Hogenberg, Frans
Hierat Anton, 1618. "Mons Calvariae". Orig. copper-engraving from the 6th part of Latin ed. of Braun and Hogenberg's "Civitates Orbis Terrarum". Published 1618. With title at the top, 2 decorative cartouches and many figures in the foreground. 32,5:45 cm (12 3/4 x 17 3/4 inch.). Koeman IV, map 2015, ed. 41:1 (1617/18 B&H 6). - A birds-eye-view of Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, a town in southern Poland (southeast of Krakow). - This view of Kalwaria Zebrzydowska comes from the sixth and last volume of Civitates Orbis Terrarum ("Theatri Praecipuarum Totius Mundi Urbivm Liber Sextus"), published in a much smaller edition than previous volumes, and it is therefore rarer than most of Braun & Hogenberg city views.

VIGENERE, Blaise de
Veuve Abel Langelier, Paris, 1618. ______ Format : In-4. *-------* First edition. [Attributes: First Edition]
