Köln, Anton Hieratus 1618. - Bautz IV, 914-915; VD17, 23:625877R (Tl. IV) u. VD17, 23:625879F (Tl. 2°. Tit. (in Rot- u. Schwarzdruck), 1 Bl. (Autoren- u. Werksverz.), 1071(1) S. u. Tit., 1 Bl. (Verz.), 982 S. (Text 2-spaltig gesetzt). The Historie of Tithes, That is, The Practice of Payment of Them. The

1618 - Well-Preserved First Edition of Selden's Tithes Selden, John [1584-1654]. The Historie of Tithes, That is, The Practice of Payment of Them. The Positive Laws Made for Them. The Opinions Touching the Right of Them. A Review of It is Also Annext, Which Both Confirmes It and Directs in the Use of It. [London: s.n.], 1618. [vi], xxii, [12], 491, [5] pp. Quarto (7-1/2" x 5-1/2"). Recent period-style calf, blind frames to boards, raised bands and gilt title to spine, endpapers renewed. Light fading to portions of boards, corners lightly bumped. Title page printed in red and black. Toning, some discoloration and light wear to edges of title page and following few leaves, internally clean. A nice copy in a handsome binding. $650. * First edition, variant A. (One of the eight variants, with all points indicated by Sweet & Maxwell). The History of Tithes, which was one of Selden's earliest writings, angered James I and the clergy because it questioned the divine right to impose tithes. Although it was suppressed by the Court of High Commission, the resulting controversy transformed Selden into a figure of national importance. His treatment by the church and state also encouraged his opposition to political absolutism, an idea that informs his later writings. Based on remarks in the dedication and on p. 449, Sweet & Maxwell believe this is not a true first edition. (The presumed earlier edition appears to be a ghost, however.)       For Le Pautre in general: Millard coll. (French), pp. 293-298 (cf. no. 100, with Mariette eds. of other Le Pautre prints). Ten complete and very rare etched and engraved architectural-ornamental print series (each with 6 prints), designed and executed by the leading Paris architect and engraver Jean Le Pautre (1618-1682). "One of the most inventive and prolific ornamental draftsmen of all time. ... Le Pautre's importance is vast. ... All Europe followed his influence until the end of the eighteenth century." (Millard). Working for the Manufacture des Gobelins and on his own account, Le Pautre executed much work for Louis XIV. The work also provides a survey of Paris fashion in interior decoration fairly early in the reign of Louis XIV and helped to determine and establish the richly ornamental style we associate with Louis and his circles. The collection contains the following print series:Ad 1. Retables dautels a l[']italien[n]e ... Paris, Pierre II Mariette, [ca. 1670]. Ad 2. Ad 3. [Autels]. [Paris], Jean I Le Blond, [ca. 1655]. Ad 4. [Paris], Jean I Le Blond, [ca. 1655]. Ad 10. Lambris à la françoise. Paris, Pierre II Mariette, [ca. 1670?, engraved ca. 1655/57?]. With a minor water stain in the first leaves of series 7 and 10, slightly affecting the lower outside corner of their first 2 or 3 prints, but generally in very good condition. The front board has been reattached and the binding is somewhat worn, with some damage to the spine and corners, but the tooling remains clear.       For Le Pautre in general: Millard coll. 1655]. Ad 4. (engraved before 1667)]. Ad 5. [Cheminées à la moderne]. Paris, Jean I Le Blond, [ca. 1655]. Ad 6. Ad 7. Quarts de plafons. Paris, Pierre II Mariette, [ca. 1670]. Ad 8. ( [Lambris a la Romaine], Paris, Jean I Le Blond, [ca. 1670?, engraved before 1661]. Ad 9. [Lambris]. Ten very rare, beautiful and influential print series of model designs for architectural ornament, many in their earliest published states.

Leyden, Françoys van Ravelingen, 1618. Thick folio (34.3 x 22.0 x 11.2 cm). Half title, engraved title-page with letterpress title and imprint, coloured by an early hand and highlighted in gold, description of contents printed on verso; [xxviii], 1495, [1 blank], [lvi], [2 blank] pp.; about 1470 botanical woodcuts in the text (mostly 13.0 x 7.0 cm). Further with woodcut decorated initials, head- and tailpieces built up from arabesque fleurons, textura types with extensive fraktur and civilité and incidental roman, italic, rotunda and Greek types. Contemporary blind-tooled vellum over wooden boards. Bevelled edges. Spine with manuscript title. Brass clasps.l Second Dutch edition of Dodoens's last, most important and most extensively illustrated work, with Clusius's extensive appendix of American and East Indian plants, which adds nearly 100 woodcuts. Besides the usual European herbs and medicinal plants, the book describes and illustrates mushrooms, fruit trees and other trees, as well as tropical peppers, cacti, fruits, nuts, tobacco, papyrus, etc., and even a coral. It made an important contribution to systematic botany by defining the parts of plants in general. The "Cruydt-Boeck", not to be confused with the "Cruydeboeck" first published in 1554, was largely a Dutch translation of the "Stirpium historiae pemptades sex, libri XXX", first published by Plantin at Antwerp in 1583. The "Stirpium" represents Dodoens's best and last great work: a monumental botanical study divided into six large sections, each containing five books, with the plants classified in 26 groups. This system was far superior to all his earlier classifications. Joost van Raveling[h]en or Justus Raphelengius (1573-1628) at Leiden, Christophel Plantin's grandson, first published the present translation in 1608, adding extra information in a smaller type at the end of each chapter. These additions give information on the qualities of the plants taken from the "Cruydeboeck" (if they are not present in the "Stirpium"), as well as new information or descriptions of new plants taken from the work of other authors, including Carolus Clusius and Mathias de Lobel. At the end Van Ravelingen added a whole new part on exotic plants taken from the works of Clusius, Garcia da Orta, Nic. Monardès, Chr. Acosta and others. Willem Swanenburgh engraved the title-page, originally for the 1608 edition. It has a view of a botanical garden (with cacti, palm trees and other exotic plants) in an architectural frame with garlands of fruit and roundel portraits of Dodoens and Clusius, with the letterpress text in two cartouches. It is here coloured by an early hand. The present edition includes the same woodcuts as the first Dutch edition, with some additions for the parts by Clusius. The main text is set in textura type, and each of the thirty books begins with a headpiece of arabesque fleurons, a large decorated initial letter, and an introductory text in fraktur type. Joost Raphelengius's four-page note to the reader and the headings to the woodcuts are set in Robert Granjon's Bastarde civilité (Carter & Vervliet A6). Page 791 erroneously numbered 691. Slightly toned, with some minor spots throughout; the margins of a few pages slightly thumbed, light damp-staining to the lower margin of a few leaves in the rear. Tear in fifth preliminary leaf. Binding cracked at hinges, bottom of spine slightly damaged and some traces of use along the extremities. Overall a very good copy. Amsterdam, Jan ten Hoorn, 1696. 12mo. With an engraved title-page by Jan Luyken, showing the interior of an apothecary. Contemporary sheepskin parchment.

Klaversma & Hannema 1179-1180; STCN (1 copy, lacking frontispiece). Wellcome IV, p. 365; WorldCat (5 copies). First and only edition of a Dutch translation of the London Pharmacopoeia, which had appeared in dozens of Latin (beginning in 1618) and English (beginning in 1649) editions. Although a slightly revised Latin edition had appeared in 1677, the Dutch publisher Ten Hoorn apparently based his translation on the 1650 edition, so that his readers miss out on the recipe for Irish whiskey. It nevertheless contains much interesting information for Dutch readers. Among the many ingredients used in the recipes were the wonderful horn of a unicorn, the skull of a man killed by violence (translated as "the skull of a man who died in good health"), twelve types of excrement (for which the Dutch translator used five different words) and fresh cheese (pp. 26-28). A list of other medical titles printed and sold by the publisher appears on the final pages. With a bookplate. Binding soiled and spotted, text with some spots and a few small holes; lacking front endpapers. A good copy of a rare pharmacopoeia.

        Americae Nova Tabula

Bibliografia: Burden 189; Tooley, Mapping of America, pl. 169. Dimensioni 550x410. One of the best known and sought after seventeenth century maps of America. Blaeu's famous carte a figure map of America is regarded as a high point in Dutch cartography. When first published, around 1618 as a separate issue, the map summarised the most up-to-date cartography and influenced numerous other map publications until mid-century. The publisher, Willem Janszoon, adopted the name Blaeu to avoid confusion with Jan Janszoon and altered his own name on the 3rd state of the map beginning in 1621. The decorative side panels include vivid representations of Native Americans from Virginia, Florida, California (Nove Albions) and other areas in characteristic dress. The panels across the top border offer nine city views including Rio de Janeiro, Mexico City and Havana. California is still shown as a peninsula: only one Great Lake is seen. Developing colonies can be seen along the eastern seaboard of North America, the French in Canada and the English in Virginia (the Jamestown settlement). The results of further exploration by the Spanish along the California coast are also cited on the map. Bibliografia: Burden 189; Tooley, Mapping of America, pl. 169.

America rare map - Hondius/Janssonius, 1641.

"America Noviter Delineata"This important map was first published in 1618 by Jodocus Hondius. Cartographically, this map influenced a generation of cartographers and was the basis of understanding the Americas for the first half of the 17th century. When first issued the map was surrounded by four panels, figures on the sides and Views on the top and bottom. The plate was trimmed, removing the panels by Henricus Hondius c.1630. The map had a long life appearing in atlases up to 1665,This map is noted for its elegant engraving and pleasing layout, with fleets of ships and sea monsters, and two inset maps one showing the Arctic Circle and the other showing Greenland. The North Pole depicts Frobisher's theory of the Northwest Passage and the South Pole shows the long-held notion of the mythical southern continent. North America retains the peninsular California and the East Coast is beginning to take shape, although it still lacks detail in the mid-Atlantic region. In the Southwest the famous seven cities of Cibola appear on the banks of a large lake. In South America, there is a large inland sea and two engraved scenes, one of which details a cannibalistic feast. Two stylized insets of the two polar regions are enclosed in strapwork cartouches. Size: 37,5 x 49,8 cm (plus margins). The copperplate that produced this map was originally prepared by Jodocus Hondius Jr. in 1618. This issue, known in three examples, has decorative borders on all four sides. There is a 2nd state in c1629-30 with no decorative borders. A 3rd state was produced by Henricus Hondius in 1631. The map depicted here is the 4th state with the imprint of Janssonius and the addition of the date of 1641. There was a 5th state in 1652 with the date and the Hondius imprint removed. (Burden, p. 235-6).This map has German text on the verso describing America. This map is from Johannes Janssonius' Atlas of 1646-57 with a signature on the verso of "Aaa", based on van der Krogt (p. 715). An earlier version of this map was produced by Henricus Hondius in 1631. Through the collaboration between Hondius and Janssonius (they were brothers-in-law), Hondius' map was replaced by Janssonius' map in 1641. Henricus Hondius had died in 1638.Reference: Burden map #192.Size: 37,6 x 49,9 cm.Price: ?2.900,- (excl VAT/BTW).

Opera, cvm Observationibvs ac Cum Commentariis tam veterum quàm recentiorum Interpretum. Emericvs Crvcevs recensvit et novo Commentario Statii Sylvas illustravit.

Parisiis, sumptibus Thomae Blaise, 1618. - 3 tomes en 2 volumes in-4. 4ff. 741pp. + 2ff. 588pp. 6ff. + 112pp. Rousseurs. Bon exemplaire.
