BODIN, Jean
Par David du Terrior, 1616. 8vo. pp. [v] 556 [xxii]. Roman and italic letter, occasional Hebrew and Greek, title within architectural border, woodcut initials, head- and tail-pieces. General age browning, marginal worming at E2 until end, slightly affecting side-notes (still legible) in gathering Ii. A good copy in contemporary vellum, title inked on spine, bookplate of Dr. Maurice Villaret to front pastedown, fly loosening. The 'Scourge of Demons and Sorcerers' is the first edition by J. B. Angevin of Bodin's immensely popular Démonomanie (1580) against witchcraft, which identifies signs of witchcraft and demonic possession, and takes a hard line on the punishment of witches and sorcerers. Book one begins with a discussion of the nature of sorcerers and spirits, and their means of disguising themselves in everyday life. Book two focuses on the types of magic sorcerers and witches perform, continued in book three along with tips on avoiding enchantment, or worse. Bodin works by example, from the Swiss werewolf that attacked a lumberjack, to children in Germany and France given to the devil at birth. He is virulent in his refutation of Johannes Wier, a doctor who believed, ahead of his time, that "demonic possession" was really a symptom of psychological illness. Bodin speaks with something like a personal vendetta against Wier's teacher Cornelius Agrippa, the 'tres-dangereux' sorcerer, and his dog Monsieur, a demon. When Agrippa died in Grenoble in 1535, Monsieur drowned himself in a nearby river, proof positive for Bodin that both master and dog had a deal with the devil. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jodocus HONDIUS II
Amsterdam, 1616. A superior rival to the pocket Ortelius atlas appeared about 1598, under the imprint of Barent Langenes and Cornelis Claesz. Claesz also published the Tabularum Geographicarum Contractarum, edition with texy by Petrus Bertius, in 1600. After the death of Cornelis Claesz in 1609, Jodocus Hondius II became the new publisher of the work, composed by 7 parts in 1, with engraved title-page and 220 full-page engraved maps in text. All the maps were newly engraved and slightly larger in size, because Hondius was not able to acquire the original plates. With the new plates the work was definitely improved and enjoyed a growing demand of the public, which at that time had the choice between the Atlas Minor by Mercator and Bertius' Tabularum Geographicarum. The 219 plates, with the oval world map appearing twice, were produced to illustrate a new version of the geography of Bertius, published in 1616. According to King, their correct attribution is by Hondius, after Mercator and Hondius, taken from Bertius, who was only responsible for revising his text again. Copperplates, in very good c … [Click Below for Full Description]

BAROQUE;
Stuttgart 1616. In-4° à l'italenne (235 X 270 mm). 1/2 basane XIXème (Reliure très frottée. Quelques rousseurs.
