BESLER, Basil (1561-1629)
[Nuremberg, by the author, chronogram date 1622], 1616. Oblong 4to (262 x 178 mm), comprising engraved title, one letterpress dedication leaf, and 24 engraved plates; single minute and insignificant wormhole inside platemarks, margins of last plate frayed and with old repair to margins, a very good, unrestored copy in its original limp vellum binding, labelled in ink on spine.First edition, an unrestored copy in its original binding, with rich, dark impressions of the plates. Basil Besler (1561-1629), compiler of the celebrated Hortus Eystettensis, 1613, was a Nuremberg apothecary and one of the first to assemble a natural history Wunderkammer. This is the first work to illustrate such a cabinet in Germany, and its interior is depicted on the engraved title/frontispiece, with Besler exhibiting the contents to a visitor. This is one of the few catalogues to be published by the owner of the collection.'The collection included stuffed animals, including snakes, a crocodile and an armadillo, fruits, spices and nuts from Brazil and Mauritius, shells and coral and a fine mineral and fossil section with ammonites and belemnites, bezoars, glossopetrae (fossil sharks' teeth, still regarded as curious stones) and a stone in the form of a hand. Besler's nephew Michael Rupert Besler (1607-1661) continued to add to the collection and published a further account of it in 1642' (From Wunderkammer to Museum p 48).The engraved title/frontispiece is by Hans Troschel after Peter Isselburg, who were also presumably responsible for the plates, or at least the original 24.The frontispiece shows … [Click Below for Full Description]

Aelianus, Tacticus, active 2nd century.; Bingham, John
London: For Laurence Lisle, 1616. First edition, second issue with A2 a cancel. Small folio, old, possibly original dark brown leather, pp. (6), 159 (7), with engraved title page and 49 (of 50?) plates, many of which are folding. Good copy, front board neatly reattached with japanese paper inner hinge and dyed and sympathetic japanese paper over the outer joint. Looks pretty good. New flyleaves, front and rear. Title page and first pages show edgewear and minor marginal loss, otherwise the contents are very good. We have counted and recounted the plates and have come up with 49 each time. Other listings cite as few as 45 plates but most mention engraved title page plus 50 plates. The Da Capo reprint reports only 48 plates. So we are not entirely certain our copy is missing a plate but it is priced as if it was incomplete. Light scuffing to binding. Good.

Dyke, Daniel
London: Printed by Edward Griffin. First edition, 1616, (4) 198 (2) 201-358 pp, collated complete, the second part having its own title page. Good copy, retaining contemporary boards with blind rules and more recent spine, the joints splitting and wear to the spine, contents very good, light wear and soil to title page and terminal leaves, text clean and bright. Apparently none of his works, which are puritanical in substance, was published during his lifetime (d. 1614), but were all posthumously published edited by his brother, Jeremiah Dyke. Rare on the market: no copies currently online or found at auction in the last 35 years. Good.

CHAMPLAIN (Samuel de) & DUVAL (Pierre).
Paris, 1616-1664. 346 x 540 mm. [Click Below for Full Description]

CHACON, ALFONSO (CIACCONE, CIACCONIUS) - TRAJAN'S COLUMN.
(Rome, Mascardi, 1616 ?). Folio-oblong. (35x50 cm.). Old full vellum. Rebacked. Edges restored. Endpapers renewed. 14,(2) pp. of text. Corners and margins ocassionally repaired. With 121 (of 130) engraved plates, numbered 10-130 (lacks plates 1-9 which shows the whole column, "Interiores Frontis Columnæ"). The plates with more than 300 figures depicting scenes from Roman military life, numbered in the plates depicting the spiral relief in section, "Exterioris Frontis Columnæ". All plates mounted on thick paper with large margins. Plates shaved to image (no loss of images). Due to some soiling and foxing on verso of the paper on which the plates are mounted, some light browning is shown on ca. 30 plates in the middle. ¶ The work was first published in 1576, but reissued several times after this year. The present copy points to a later reissue with the original plates, perhaps after 1616. It has a caption title on page 1, and the text (complete) is printed in folio. Our copy corresponds to OCLC Number 78354880.<br>The plates are engraved by F. Villamena after the drawings (the whole frieze) of Girolamo Muziano (1530-1590), director of the Vatican works, together with an explanation of the figures, written by the Spanish scholar Alfonso Chacon (Ciaccone).<br>Chacon's Historia is the first publication to include a full series of illustrations of the sculpted reliefs on the famous triumphal column, erected by the Roman senate in AD 113 to celebrate the victories of the Emperor Trajan over the Dacians. This copy is in excellent condition with full uncut leaves, a majority of which are pristine with bright white pages. The bible is found in a early 18th century rich red leather binding with a gold border along the edge that proceeds inside the covers as well. The spine is browned with a large black label that simply states "Bible." The spine contains seven slightly raised hubs and was rebound by R. Robinson on 116 Pilgrim Street in Newcastle. It contains rich marbled endpapers affixed to covers as well as first of two blank leaves to either side. The leaves found in this edition are quite remarkable with exception of a few leaves that required marginal repair with one leaf of Genealogy lacking 25% of lower portion. Otherwise the leaves are crisp, full wide uncut margins and collates complete and perfect with few apologies. This is the RARE final Geneva folio edition containing the Apocrypha!!Includes a custom box. Collates complete and museum quality. This is the final Geneva folio edition containing the Apocrypha. This copy includes the Genealogy which is not called for according to Herbert in this edition and includes a curious history of the author of such John Speed. It resembles the 1592 edition but the columns of print are four lines longer. The first completely blank leaf is inscribed in neat hand that the bible was purchased in June 1810 by John Hunt at Burlington Fain. It then provides a curious lengthy history of the life of John Speed who later died in 1679 whose Genealogies is then found which are rarely ever attached to a Geneva edition. ROSICRUCIANS
8vo (155 x 92mm.) 14,[2(blank)]p., device on title-page, decorative paper wrappers First edition of this very rare and early Rosicrucian tract unrecorded by OCLC outside Germany. This little tract, dated 3 December 1615, which the author claims, he has been prevented from writing over many years by pressure of business, is addressed to the Rosicrucian brotherhood, quotes frequently from Palingenius Zodiacus vitae, and makes reference to one or two contemporary works, the Chymische Hochzeit published by Zetzner in Strasbourg in 1616, and Julius Sperber (d. 1616) 'de summo huius & futurae vitae thesauro' (an adaptation perhaps of a German title). On p. 12 the author tells us that he is a from a wealthy family, a citizen of a very famous city located on the foremost river of Europe, aged 57, active in the state's business, a widower with several sons, one of whom, now fifteen is a fine linguist (here the tetragrammaton is printed in Hebrew). He further says that his name is taken from the designation of ' grace & peace', but, that if people guess at what it is, he beseeches them not to reveal it. The work is commonly attributed to Friedrich Grick of Altdorf, but his pseudonym is Eirenaios Agnostos, not the name found in this pamphlet, and he is said to have attacked the Rosicrucians. This attribution seems unlikely given the warm tone towards them here adopted, unless it is meant ironically. If this is by Grick, then it is his earliest work, most of his titles dating from a few years later. In the catalogue Cimelia Rhodostaurotica, Amsterdam, 1995, no. 108, the authorship is g … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cassander, George, 1513-1566); Pacard, Abraham
Paris: Apud Abrahamum Pacard, 1616. Folio. [8] 1352 pages, 18pp. index, portrait of Cassander. Title page in red and black with printer's device "Obsedientia potior victima". Issued in 1616 with most of his works and the next year placed on the Index which forbade Catholics to even examine the book. He attempted to find a middle ground between Catholics and Protestants at the end of the Council of Trent but his belief in the supremacy of private judgment and the human origin of the papacy was considered nothing more than a serious heresy by the Catholic Church. While this work issued in 1616 was placed on the Index in 1617, he himself had been also condemned by Calvin. Cassander also condemned the anabaptists who denied infant baptism. It is believed that he died in full submission to the Catholic Church, pages 169-170 misnumbered but text complete. Bound in old brown calf, board triple ruled in blind, raised bands, blue leather label lettered in yellow, repair to head, new endpapers, text clean wiothout foxing.

Book of Common Prayer - French]
Par Iehan Bill, imprimatur du Roy, A Londres, 1616. [544]pp. A-E4 [2]A-2R4; A-Z3 (plus blank). Quarto. Contemporary armorial calf. Titles within woodcut borders, decorated initials, contemporary typographic wastesheets utilized in binding. Light smear to 2H1v, occasional marginal tidemarks, a couple signatures starting, covers splayed and a bit discolored, lower joint split, early ink ownership inscription on front binder's blank, more annotations on verso of rear binder's blank, marginal flaw in fore-edge of 2E4; still, if one elected to discard the remaining not insignificant vestigial virtues of the original binding, a copy that could be rendered fairly agreeable if placed in modern dress. First edition of the first French translation of the 1603 King James I Prayer Book, translated by Pierre de Laune, past of the French Reformed congregation in Norwich. The translation was "originally commissioned by James I to promote a royal marriage between Henry Prince of Wales (d. 1612) with the French princess Christine; some years later the project was revived in connection with the marriage of Charles Prince of Wales & Princess Henrietta Maria of France ." - Griffiths. The section of the Psalms has its own woodcut decorated title-leaf (2R4). Although common enough institutionally -- ESTC locates eleven copies in North America, spread over 8 locations - the last perfect copy noted in ABPC is the Evelyn copy (1977), with only one other appearance following that, a copy lacking a blank and one text leaf, GRIFFITHS 36.2 STC 16431. Tacticus Aelianus
London: For Laurence Lisle, 1616. Condition: Good. [Attributes: First Edition]

BASIL, Saint of Caesarea
1616. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "Words are truly the image of the soul." ― Basil the Great Basil the Great, saint of Caesarea, was a 4th-century theologian who is greatly remembered for his involvement and support of the Nicene Creed. He wrote a number of works on morals and ethics, sermons, homilies, exegeses on the Holy Spirit, and even political lectures. These works appeared in many editions and versions throughout the 16th and 17th-centuries, however, this Jesuit edition is particularly desirable. Published in 1616, this edition features the translation and edits of Andre Schott, as well as the commentary and notes of Fronton du Duc, two notable Jesuits. [Attributes: First Edition]
