Mexia, Pedro; Mambrino Roseo; Francesco Sansovino; Alfonso de Ulloa; Bartolommeo Dionigi
Venice: Ambrosio & Bartolomeo Dei, 1616. 5 volumes in one. Quarto (23 cm); [40], 357, [17], 214, [12],186, [2 blank], [24], 277, [8], 112 pages. Each of the five parts with separate title page, with woodcut printer's device. Frequent woodcut illustrations, portraits, emblems, diagrams and ornaments in text. Bound in ineteenth-century half calf over marbled boards, expertly rebacked, with new leather label. Gilt edges. Few blemishes. Edges trimmed close, with some slight loss at lower edge of title page. References: Laurenti, Spanish Golden Age, 276. A 17th-century Italian translation of the Spanish 16th-century "forest of many stories" by Pedro Mexia. The book is a Spanish Renaissance entry into the genre named "Silvae" by Statius, but this text falls more into the tradition of Xenophon's Symposium, Athenaeus, Macrobius, and Aulus Gellius, that is, expansive, shapeless, episodic, with masses of detail and a stupefying variety of topics and narratives. It was incredibly popular in the 16th and 17th centuries, reprinted in something like 106 editions in every European language. It was a rich treasure chest for later Renaissance authors, such as Miguel Cervantes (whose Quixote is also a forest of many tales, several of them lifted from Mexia) and Christopher Marlowe (who pulled his Tamburlaine from its pages). It is now thoroughly obscure.

Smith, John Captain (1580-1631)
London, 1616. THE FIRST MAP OF NEW ENGLAND Copper-plate engraving: 117/8" x 137/8" References: Seymour I. Schwartz & Ralph E. Ehrenberg, The Mapping of America (New York, 1980), 96-99; Thomas Suarez, Shedding the Veil (Singapore, 1992), 127-9; M.B. Pritchard & H.M. Taliaferro, Degrees of Latitude: Mapping Colonial America (Williamsburg, 2002), n. 6. In 1614, five years after returning to England from Virginia, Captain John Smith returned to the New World, this time to the coasts of Maine and Massachusetts Bay - the region that would come to be known, thanks to the map that he subsequently published, as "New England." This map, the result of Smith's personal explorations and field surveys, covers the area from Penobscot Bay to Cape Cod. It is the earliest map devoted to the region and the foundational work of New England cartography. Smith's second New World voyage was initiated by the invitation of four London merchants who financed two ships that sailed in March 1614 with instructions to return with a profitable cargo. Smith made the Atlantic crossing in a relatively speedy six weeks, arriving off Monhegan Island near the Kennebec estuary. By that time the waters of New England, particularly Maine, were being visited by dozens of English and French fishing vessels a year. While the crew of one of Smith's vessels concentrated on catching fish and collecting other valuable commodities, Smith continued down the coast to chart and explore, lamenting the poor quality of existing maps: "[I] had six or seven several plots of those Northern parts, so unlike each to oth … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jan Van Wely
Amsterdam: Unknown. Fine+. 1616. Hardcover. Illustrated broadsheet, without place, printing or signature, 1616. Small oblong folio, ( size of sheet 19 x 26 cm. ) . With engraving of murder, above title, below German text in typesetting. Jan van Wely was a rich and well known jeweller of Amsterdam. In March 1616, he travelled to The Hague to show Prince Maurice of Nassau a precious collection of diamonds and rubies. There he became the victim of a murder with robbery, preformed by two Frenchmen. The engraving of the broadsheet depicts van Wely elegantly dressed, examining jewels given to him by one of his murderers, Ian van Parijs, whereas the other, Ian de la Vinge, is directing a bullet from his pistol towards Wely's head. A window in the rear wall shows a later moment: the murderers trying to hide Wely's corpse. The case causes big sensations in contemporary Europe. The murderers were seized and executed in May of the same year. Drugulin II, 1305, describes a broadsheet identical to ours but bearing engravers signature of Crispin de Passe. This sheet seems to be a close copy of de Passe's engraving. Trimmed close. Upper right corner has a neat repair with replacement of paper about 1.2 inches x ,55 inches. A very interesting and humourous broadsheet. Several engravings of devils are floating around the scene, tempting the theives, and there is a small miniature of the gallows scene where the murderers are being hanged. Excellent condition. Description courtesy of Reiss & Sohn, Konigstein, 3-05-97 Mounted in a sumptuous oblong 4to binding, 1/4 black morocco wit … [Click Below for Full Description]

MERCATOR, Gerard
Amsterdam: Jodocus Hondius, 1616. unbound. very good. Petrus Kaerius. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 14.75" x 20.25". Map of Iberian Peninsula, beautifully decorated with ships and sea monsters. French text on back. Scattered staining and crease right of centerfold, that has led to a few small holes from original coloring. From the "Gerardi Mercatoris Atlas sive Cosmographicae" (Mercator-Hondius Atlas). Plate was originally made by Mercator and later added to by Hondius. Mercator (1512-1594) was an accomplished mathematician, cartographer, globe maker and engraver but is best known for the Mercator Projection. Incorporating the newly accepted fact that the world is round, Mercator was able to render longitude lines consistently straight on a chart. Although this requires some distortion, it was of great use for navigators, and is historically important, as it is still the most commonly used projection today.
