SPEED, John.
London, John Sudbury & George Humble, 1616, Latin text edition. 385 x 520mm. A good, early impression. Engraved by Jodocus Hondius, this is one of the most decorative maps of the county, with inset plan of Exeter, royal crest and armorials. This example comes from the only non-English edition of Speed's Theatre, produced for the Continental market. Its lack of success makes it comparatively scarce: it was only after 1918 that the British Museum obtained a complete Latin volume. CHUBB: xxiv; SKELTON 11.

JONSON, BEN
London: Imprinted at London by Will Stansby; Printed for Richard Meighen; no publisher stated for third volume, 1616, 1637,1640. Three volumes. First Edition; small-paper issue. Volume 1; third state title page; bound in contemporary (?) full brushed leather with tooling to front and rear panels; rebacked with spine laid down; title page backed; some worm-holing to upper right margin of 18 preliminary pages, else very good. Volume 2 lacks the title page; full contemporary leather, rebacked with the original spine laid down; some staining to a few pages on the bottom margin; about very good. Volume 3 has a typographical error not mentioned in Pforzheimer, the imprint of Magnetick Lady reading M.CD.XI instead of M.DC.XI. Full contemporary leather; rebacked with the original spine laid down and with some loss to the bottom edge of the front two blanks; very good. All volumes are housed in matching slipcases. Jonson was the most prominent contemporary of Shakespeare, whose theater produced some of Jonson's plays and who acted in at least one of them. Jonson's posthumous reputation sank as Shakespeare's rose, but the twentieth-century saw a positive reappraisal of his work, led in part by T.S. Eliot.

Rothe, Salomon.
Freiberg, Melchior Hoffmann, [1616].. (48) SS. A2-3). PAAW, Pieter.
Lugduni Batavorum [Leiden]: apud Iodocum à Colster. FIRST EDITION of Paaw's commentary on the books of Hippocrates and Celsus on wounds of the head. The text of the first part is in Greek and Latin, and both parts are richly illustrated with very finely executed engravings, a few of which are repeated, which show the anatomy of the head (including the teeth), and the surgical instruments used. The two folding plates are of the skeletal anatomy of the entire body and of the head. Artistically, the glory of this beautiful book is the folding frontispiece, engraved by Andries Jacobsz Stock after Jacob de Gheyn (1565-1629), which depicts Paaw giving an anatomy lesson in the anatomical theatre at Leiden. The theatre was built at his request, and was the first such theatre in the Netherlands. This plate was also published in Paaw's book on the anatomy of the bones published in 1615. It is modelled on the title-page of the Fabrica of Vesalius, of whom Paaw was an ardent admirer, editing an edition of the Epitome in 1616. Blas Bruni Celli, Bibliografia Hipocrática, 3234.4to, pp. (xxiv), 270; (ii), 128, fine folding engraved frontispiece (bound after the fourth leaf, as often), 2 folding plates; numerous engraved illustrations in the text, including many half- and full-page, and a portrait of Paaw on the verso of the title. DODONAEUS, R.
1616. Antverpiae, ex Officina Plantiniana, apud B. & I. Moretos, 1616. Folio (346 x 230mm). pp. (16), 872, (66), with fine engraved title and 1341 woodcuts of plants in the text. Contemporary blindpressed pigskin. "Best revised and enlarged edition." (Hunt 201). A fine and attractively bound copy, frontcover hinges splitting but firm. Dodoens was the first of the Great Flemish botanists and helped to forward the growing interest in classification which had begun with Bock's "Neu Kreuterbuch" in 1539. Dodonaeus graduated from the University of Louvain in 1535. After working in Malines as a physician he moved to Vienna to assume the post of personal physician to Emperor Maximilian II, later he moved to Prague when Rudolph II succeeded Maximilian. In 1582 Dodonaeus was appointed professor of botany at the University of Leiden. The above offered work is Dodoens last and most comprehensive botanical work, incorporating material from a number of his earlier books, including the "Cruydeboeck". It is of interest, that he made here an attempt to an explanation of the parts of the plants. Nissen BBI, 517..
