Jodocus HONDIUS II (1594 - 1629)
A superior rival to the pocket Ortelius atlas appeared about 1598, under the imprint of Barent Langenes and Cornelis Claesz. Claesz also published the Tabularum Geographicarum Contractarum, edition with texy by Petrus Bertius, in 1600. After the death of Cornelis Claesz in 1609, Jodocus Hondius II became the new publisher of the work, composed by 7 parts in 1, with engraved title - page and 220 full - page engraved maps in text. All the maps were newly engraved and slightly larger in size, because Hondius was not able to acquire the original plates. With the new plates the work was definitely improved and enjoyed a growing demand of the public, which at that time had the choice between the Atlas Minor by Mercator and Bertius' Tabularum Geographicarum. The 219 plates, with the oval world map appearing twice, were produced to illustrate a new version of the geography of Bertius, published in 1616. According to King, their correct attribution is by Hondius, after Mercator and Hondius, taken from Bertius, who was only responsible for revising his text again. Copperplates, in very go … [Click Below for Full Description]

KING JAMES I.
London: Robert Barker and John Bill, 1616. Edges browned, affecting the outer blank margins, preliminaries thumbed and contents leaf with marginal paper repairs; bindings scuffed with some wear of the extremities and raised bands (now skilfully repaired), recent spine label; nonetheless an attractive copy in a striking early binding.. Folio, engraved and letterpress titles, frontispiece portrait and royal arms; contemporary full calf with raised bands and gilt stamped crests to both boards. First edition of King James's works, long regarded as a paradigm of early seventeenth-century English typography and book production. The Workes include famous essays such as the Daemonologie and A Counterblaste to Tobacco, and feature the famous portrait engraved by Simon de Passe and the ornamental title page by Renold Elstracke.James was remarkable in the range and extent of his literary output: 'His harsh education failed to discourage his love of the things of the mind; the king famed to this day for his passion for hunting was, in his own time, equally famed for his passion for retiring into his study for solace and as an escape from relentless and importunate suitors' (ODB). As a writer James may have been florid and prone to circumlocution, yet his prodigious output of essays and pamphlets provide extraordinary insights into monarchy and society under Stuart rule. Two of the most famous essays concern pivotal social events: the Daemonologie provides a good account of the prosecution of the North Berwick witchcraft trials, while in A Discourse of the Powder Treason the Kingreflect … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rarissima edizione originale di questa orazione funebre in memoria di Bibiana Pernstein Gonzaga principessa di Castiglione. Agostino Mascardi nacque a Sarzana nel 1590. ALDROVANDI, U.
I.C. Vterverivs ... collegit, & recensuit. H. Tambvrinvs in lucem edidit ... Cum indice copiosissimo. Bononiae, V. Benatius, 1616. Folio (350 x 238mm). pp. (8), 495, (33), with 1 elaborately engraved title, 13 (some full-page) woodcuts and 1 woodcut printer's device. Contemporary vellum, spine in 7 compartments with gilt lettering. First edition of this work on quadrupeds, which was published posthumously as many of his other works. The volume is devoted to 'solid-hooved' quadrupeds, such as horses, zebras, elephants, centaurs, etc. and features several fine woodcuts, many from drawings by Jacopo Ligozzi. Included among the illustrations are cuts of a unicorn horn and a remarkable one of petrified elephant's catarrh. "Although Aldrovandi is not identified with any revolutionary discoveries, his work as a teacher and as the author of volumes that constitute an irreplacable cultural patrimony earns him a place among the fathers of modern science. Perhaps most importantly he was among the first to attempt to free the natural sciences from the stifling influence of the authority of textbooks, for which he substituted, as far as possible, direct study and observation of the animal, vegetable, and mineral worlds" (D.S.B. I, pp. 108-110). A crisp and attractively bound copy, engraved title with small old paper repair at outer corners.//Nissen ZBI, 72.

- I.C. Vterverivs . collegit, & recensuit. H. Tambvrinvs in lucem edidit . I, pp. 108-110). A crisp and attractively bound copy, engraved title with small old paper repair at outer corners.Nissen ZBI, 72 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

FABRICIUS HILDANUS, GUILHELMUS
Basel: Ludwig König, 1615; 1607; Oppenheim: Hieronymus Galler for the Heirs of Johann Theodor de Bry, 1614;, 1616. Second Edition of the first work, FIRST EDITION of the second and third works; First Latin Edition of the fourth work. This is an important and fascinating collection of works from the man sometimes called the father of German surgery, Wilhelm Fabry von Hilden (1560-1634). Fabry was the first well-educated German surgeon and a prolific author, whose applied research (like that of his contemporary, Antoine Paré) transformed early modern medicine. Norman notes that "although he did not reject traditional humoral doctrine, Fabry was ahead of his time in his attempts to explain disease and injury in terms of localized physical causes." This volume begins with the second edition of the first published description of the contents (and their applications) of a medical field chest for military use. Although he never served in a military campaign, Fabry made numerous innovations in battlefield surgery, notably in amputation. He was the first to successfully amputate at the thigh as well as the first to recommend amputation significantly above the line of gangrene. The second item is the first work devoted to the study of burns; Fabry was the first to classify burn severity into three degrees, and to describe how different heat sources resulted in different types of burns. He also set forth the first reasonable treatments for burns that specified the regular cleaning and treating of blisters, loose bandaging, and how to deal with conglutination (a particular … [Click Below for Full Description]

Caballo, Pietro.
Caballo (d. 1616) was a Florentine judge and legal writer who saw his "Resolutionum criminalium" achieve great acceptance upon publication in 1606 and as attested to by the several later editions in the 17th century. This dense work on criminal law begins with a title-page in red and black with type in a great variety of point sizes of roman and italic. The text is printed in double-column format and each "century" begins with a large woodcut headpiece and ends with a small woodcut tailpiece. This edition, "Hac quarta editione pluribus mendis expurgatae," has several very good indices of "arguments," words, and "things."

Superbly decorative, it was copied by both Blaeu and Janssonius for their British atlases in the 1640s.Arguably one of the masterpieces included in Speed's "Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine". Verso: English text. "Sold by John Sudbury & Georg Humble in Popes Head alley at London."Size: 38,8 x 51,7 cm.Price: € 3.000, - (excl VAT/BTW).
