Peleus, Julien (author). Pierre Baron (plaintiff). Antoine Baron
Chez la vefve Claude de Monstr'oeil, 1616. First Edition. Softcover. 8vo. 1 f., [6], 96 pp. Collation: A4 A-M8, COMPLETE. Title-page cropped on upper margin affecting the first and largest word "Plaidoyer." Recent sympathetic wrappers in the antique style. Very good. The "Affaire Baron," brilliantly argued by Julien Peleus, one of the most esteemed lawyers of his day, in which the eldest son and heir (Pierre, a priest) decides to sue his younger brother (Antoine) to recover the inheritance the former had renounced years earlier. This important trial brings to light the very problematic issue of inheritance when the eldest male son takes his vows, and thereby renounces his birthright and associated lands and properties. The trial took place on April 14, 1616, and was cited in in Article 13 of the Coûtume de Paris; the eldest son Pierre was relieved from the renunciation, and all properties which had subsequently passed to his younger brother and his wife were reverted by the Court. Further problematic was the discovery of the marriage contract between Antoine and his wife Anne Vozdie in which Pierre's renunciation had been recorded and duly notarized; therefore the reversion of properties was a breach of contract. Although little known today, these legal complications were discussed at length by George Louet in his "Recveil d'aucuns notables arrests, donnez en la cour de parlement de Paris" (1665), pp. 391-392. ¶ Julien Peleus (1550-1625), a celebrated lawyer in Paris, was described as one of the "oracles" of jurisprudence. Most of the presidents of Parliament (e.g. Potier d … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bonifaccio, Giovanni [Bonifacio]
In Vicenza, Appresso Francesco Grossi, [1616] MDCXVI, Prima edizione. Bonifacio). in 8°, cartonato coevo, pp. [20] 623 [1]. Prima edizione. Above all stands a skeleton holding a banner which bears this inscription: Mors ultima linea rerum. The illustration was based on that which appears in Vesalius' Fabrica (Paaw was a great champion of Vesalius and published his own edition of the Epitome in 1616). Aloisio GIOVANNOLI (Civita Castellana 1550 circa - Roma 1618)
Incisioni in rame, monogrammate in lastra in basso a sinistra. Molto rare. Bibliografia: Cicognara 3748, Olschki 17035. Dimensioni 380x215 Series of etchings, from the very rare Vedute degli antichi vestigi di Roma... Alfonso ARRIGONI ( attivo tra 1616-1637)
"Map taken from the ""Tabularum Geographicarum contractarum"" by Petrus Bertius, Latin edition of 1616. The work contains 219 maps illustrating this new version of the geography of Bertius, first published in 1612 with the maps by Barent Langenes. The maps come after from large Mercator/Hondius Atlas, of which many represent a simple reduction. ""After the death of Cornelis Claesz in 1609, Jodocus Hondius II became the new publisher of the work, composed by 7 parts in 1, with engraved title-page and 220 full-page engraved maps in text. All the maps were newly engraved and slightly larger in size, because Hondius was not able to acquire the original plates. With the new plates the work was definitely improved and enjoyed a growing demand of the public, which at that time had the choice between the Atlas Minor by Mercator and Bertius' Tabularum Geographicarum. The 219 plates, with the oval world map appearing twice, were produced to illustrate a new version of the geography of Bertius, published in 1616. According to King, their correct attribution is by Hondius, after Mercator and Hondius, taken … [Click Below for Full Description]

Giacomo LAURO (1561-1645/50)
Bulino, 1616. [Click Below for Full Description]

Large woodcut arms on title page, folding woodcut plate of the heavens before p. 1, and two full-page and over 100 half-page woodcut illustrations in the text. Early pattered boards, later calf spine. A little bit spotted and waterstained. Some wear to boards at edges, bumping to corners, and rubbing to calf. FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION, and thus a very important edition of the most influential mythography of the late Renaissance--and indeed the whole Baroque period. This text was used as a source by Ronsard and others of the Pleiade in France, as well as by George Chapman and Francis Bacon in England; but on artists its influence was equally profound, especially once it appeared in illustrated editions. Art theorists, too, took the work as a fruitful source: Lomazzo in particular lifted great protions for his section on iconography. 1616. Author: King James I Title: THE WORKES OF THE MOST HIGH AND MIGHTIE PRINCE, IAMES BY THE GRACE OF GOD, KING OF GREAT BRITAINE, FRANCE AND IRELAND, DEFENDER OF THE FAITH, &C. LONDON: PRINTED BY ROBERT BARKER, AND JOHN BILL, PRINTERS TO THE KINGS MOST EXCELLENT MAIESTIE, 1616 Place Published: London Publisher: Printed by Robert Barker (Barker was responsible for publishing the first King James Bible in 1611, several of whose original woodblocks were again used in the printing of this book) Date Published: 1616 This volume is of great interest to the development of the idea of the divine right of kings and other Stuart constitutional problems. Typographically this is one of the finest specimens of Jacobean book-production. The Workes, first published in 1616 (with two additional workes appended in 1620) is a fascinating collection of the writings of King James VI & I, founding monarch of Great Britain and the king who commanded the translation of the Authorised Version of the holy scriptures (also known as the Authorized King James Version of the Bible). Some interesting highlights from the text include: - Commentary on the End Times (A Paraphrase of the Revelation of the Apostle St. John), Three Books on Witchcraft and the Occult (Daemonologie), A Counterblast to Tobacco, Basilikon Doron (Title is Greek for "Royal Gift"), His Account of the First Attempted Modern Terrorist Attack (A Discourse of the Powder Treason), The Divine Right of Kings, An Apology for the Oath of Allegiance, Speeches and more. - "A Discourse of the Powder Treason" is King James' personal account o … [Click Below for Full Description]
