BARLOW, William
London: Edward Griffin for Timothy Barlow, 1616. First edition, very rare, and complete with the errata leaf, containing Barlow's fundamental discovery, the directional properties of the compass-needle, as well as the first use of the English words magnetism and magneticall (OED). The only other complete copy sold at auction since the Honeyman sale in 1978 was the Horblit-Streeter copy (Christie's NY, 16 April 2007, $36000 - "one diagram and some headlines cropped"). This is a large copy with no absolutely cropping. Barlow "designed navigating instruments, polar charts, and compasses. He explained the difference between iron and steel needles; improved the needle's shape; made an easily removable card so the needle could be easily remagnetized; gave instructions as to the best method of remagnetizing the needle by stroking it with the lodestone three or four times from the needle's center to the ends, using the north end of the lodestone for the needle's north end, and the south for the south. He also designed an azimuth compass for measuring the variations which happened to be an improvement on the instrument designed by Norman and Borough; it was a compass with sights and a verge ring marked in degrees, the first such compass, and was to be used by grateful seamen for over two hundred years" (Gurney, Compass, a Story of Exploration and Innovation, New York (2004), p. 64). Barlow's interest in magnetism, which had begun some forty years before the publication of this book, involved him in relations with William Gilbert (1540-1603). Gilbert's 'De magnete' (1600), which was … [Click Below for Full Description]

London England: Christopher Barker. 1616 Geneva Bible Small Folio Protestant Reformation Holy Lacks Gen Title. Has NT title. Contains Genealogies, Old Testament, Apocyphra, New Testament, and 2 Tables at end. Printed by Robert Barker, LONDON. Small Folio. Most pages in near fine condition, with very nice wide margins. The pages are some of the better ones I've seen for Geneva bibles. There are some soiling, damp-stains and marks throughout (not very many) as age appropriate. One page with corner text loss (1 Corinthians). First page of end tables has marginal reinforcement obscuring marginal text. Last page of tables has tear (no text loss). Pages red gilt. Binding bumped on corners, rubbed along bottom, otherwise in good shape and intact. Includes map of Garden of Eden, along with other small woodcuts throughout. Has the RARE 2 Page JOHN SPEED MAP of Canaan! Also contains the preliminary genealogies. Very candidly, while there is one page that I saw with corner text loss (1 Corinthians), the reason to purchase this book is really specifically for the JOHN SPEED double page map of Canaan. It's FINE condition, and exceedingly rare. That page alone is worth well over half the price of the entire book. The rest of the book almost comes along for free. I was hesitant to sell the book because the map is so nice, and very very hard to find, especially in FINE condition. More pics available if needed. Overall, a splendid copy of a folio Geneva of the period, although lacking the General Title page. ++++++ ABOUT THE GENEVA BIBLE The Geneva Bible is one of the most historically sign … [Click Below for Full Description]

FOLIO (9 BY 13-1/2 INCHES), FIRST EDITION OF WORKS OF JAMES I, WITH SPLENDID COPPER-ENGRAVED FRONTISPIECE TITLE PAGE BY ELSTRACK. Typographically this is one of the finest specimens of Jacobean book-production. The Workes, first published in 1616 (with two additional workes appended in 1620) is a fascinating collection of the writings of King James VI & I, founding monarch of Great Britain and the king who commanded the translation of the Authorized Version of the holy scriptures (also known as the Authorized King James Version of the Bible). Some interesting highlights from the text include: Commentary on the End Times (A Paraphrase of the Revelation of the Apostle St. John), Three Books on Witchcraft and the Occult (Daemonologie), A Counterblast to Tobacco, His Account of the First Attempted Modern Terrorist Attack (A Discourse of the Powder Treason), The Divine Right of Kings to be put there by God, An Apology for the Oath of Allegiance, Speeches and more. "A Discourse of the Powder Treason" is King James' personal account of the assassination attempt on his life in the infamous "Gunpowder Plot." Also of special interest are his collected letters to his son, Prince Henry, who had tragically died at a young age. Giacomo LAURO (1561-1645/50)
Bulino, 1616. [Click Below for Full Description]

Incisioni in rame, monogrammate in lastra in basso a sinistra. Molto rare. Bibliografia: Cicognara 3748, Olschki 17035. Dimensioni 380x215 Series of etchings, from the very rare Vedute degli antichi vestigi di Roma... "Map taken from the ""Tabularum Geographicarum contractarum libri septem"" by Petrus Bertius, Latin edition of 1616. The work contains 219 maps illustrating this new version of the geography of Bertius, first published in 1612 with the maps by Barent Langenes. The maps come after from large Mercator/Hondius Atlas, of which many represent a simple reduction. ""After the death of Cornelis Claesz in 1609, Jodocus Hondius II became the new publisher of the work, composed by 7 parts in 1, with engraved title-page and 220 full-page engraved maps in text. All the maps were newly engraved and slightly larger in size, because Hondius was not able to acquire the original plates. With the new plates the work was definitely improved and enjoyed a growing demand of the public, which at that time had the choice between the Atlas Minor by Mercator and Bertius' Tabularum Geographicarum. The 219 plates, with the oval world map appearing twice, were produced to illustrate a new version of the geography of Bertius, published in 1616. Alfonso ARRIGONI ( attivo tra 1616-1637)

According to King, their correct attribution is by Hondius, after M … [Click Below for Full Description]
