Acosta, Jose de
Paris, 1616. [8],375,[16] leaves. Early vellum. Titlepage slightly worn at fore-edge. Scattered light soiling. Slight worming in gutter, not affecting text; two wormholes through last few leaves, minutely affecting text in spots. Bookplate of famous collector Alberto Parreno on verso of final leaf. Generally very good. Fourth French edition of this most important source book on the Indians of Mexico and Peru and on the natural history of South America. A Jesuit father, Acosta spent seventeen years in American missions in Mexico and Peru between 1571 and 1588. While in Peru he was instrumental in founding the printing press there, and its first productions, in 1585, were prepared by him. In addition to being an accomplished linguist, Acosta was one of the first to formulate a systemic theory of anthropology, suggesting a classification of different peoples into different types, which foreshadowed later ideas of social evolution. "As a natural historian, Acosta surpassed Oviedo. He took a philosophical approach to natural phenomena, searching for causes and effects in a spirit of critical inquiry....The subject of his moral history is pre-Columbian civilizations, particularly the Aztecs and the Incas, whose religions, customs, and governments he admiringly compares" - Delgado- Gomez. "He provided great detail in his descriptions of sailing directions, mineral wealth, trading commodities, Indian history, etc. Consequently his work operated more strongly than any other in opening the eyes of the rest of Europe to the great wealth that Spain was drawing from America" - St … [Click Below for Full Description]

Daumer, Georg Friedrich, Religionsphilosoph, Lyriker (1800-1875).
1½ SS. Auf blauem Papier. 4to und 95:198 mm. Betitelt "Über den Begriff des Märtyrerthums. Von G. Fr. Daumer". [Click Below for Full Description]

Aloisio GIOVANNOLI (Civita Castellana 1550 circa - Roma 1618)
Serie di vedute incise all'acquaforte tratta dalla rarissima opera Vedute degli antichi vestigi di Roma... Acciochè il tempo non distrugga affatto le memorie lasciateci dagl'antichi Romani con li loro mirabilissimi Edificii, ho voluto in questo Volume distinto in sette parti raccorli tutti in disegno ... l'anno del Signore MDCXVI con privilegio..., stampata a Roma nel 1616. Incisioni in rame, monogrammate in lastra in basso a sinistra. Magnifiche prove, impresse su carta vergata coeva con filigrana "cerchio e giglio con lettera S" (ove presente), con margini, in perfetto stato di conservazione. Il Giovannoli, incisore e miniaturista, è autore di questa insolita e rarissima serie di vedute di Roma, presente in pochissimi esemplari, tutti diversi tra loro, nella raccolte pubbliche. La serie completa di vedute consta probabilmente in 143 lavori, ultimati nella seconda edizione, postuma, pubblicata a Roma nel 1619 con il titolo di Roma Antica di Alo Giovanno da Civita Castellana. Le vedute raffigurano inusuali siti archeologici e monumenti principali, basandosi probabilmente sul modello di Etienne Duperac (1575) e Aegidius Sadeler (1610 circa). Assolutamente innovative sono invece la prospettiva e la tecnica incisoria, con un marcato chiaroscuro costituito da tratti obliqui decisi, forse grossolani, ma con una resa finale originale ed affascinante. Molto rare. Bibliografia: Cicognara 3748, Olschki 17035. Dimensioni 380x215 Series of etchings, from the very rare Vedute degli antichi vestigi di Roma... AUBIGNÉ (Agrippa d');
[Click Below for Full Description]

Rothe, Salomon.
1616. (48) SS. Hand. VD 17, 125:034515F.

COLONNA, Fabio (1567-1640)
Rome: Jacob Mascardi, 1616. From the Collection of Arthur & Charlotte Vershbow. 4 parts in one volume, 4to (218 x 150 mm). Half-title. 3 engraved titles with the Colonna arms and putti, 152 full-page etched plates, most of plants, the remainder of shells, marine life, insects and a hippopotamus. Borders of typographical ornament. Contemporary vellum, manuscript F on upper cover, manuscript title on spine; cloth slipcase. Provenance: Bard Doctoris Medici (early manuscript ex libris on pastedown); purchased from H.P. Kraus, 1963. FIRST COLLECTED EDITION. Second edition of parts 1-2 (first published in 1606), first edition of the Pars Altera and De Purpura. Colonna enhanced both the precision of his botanical science and the art of his depictions by being the first to choose the copper plate over the woodblock. He achieved far greater detail, and as Blunt and Stearn note, the plates, "unpretentious though they are have considerable charm" (p.100). The plates are "executed in pure etching ... Moreover, they are botanically accurate, with separate details of flowers and fruit frequently shown" (ibid). The success of De Purpura earned Colonna an early appointment to the Accademia dei Lincei, founded in Rome in 1603. Blunt and Stearn, pp.100-101; Brunet II:172-3; Nissen BBI 385; Nissen ZBI 927 (Purpura); Pritzel 1823.

DODONAEUS, R.
Antverpiae, ex Officina Plantiniana, apud B. & I. Moretos, 1616. Folio (346 x 230mm). pp. (16), 872, (66), with fine engraved title and 1341 woodcuts of plants in the text. Contemporary blindpressed pigskin. "Best revised and enlarged edition." (Hunt 201). A fine and attractively bound copy, frontcover hinges splitting but firm. Dodoens was the first of the Great Flemish botanists and helped to forward the growing interest in classification which had begun with Bock's "Neu Kreuterbuch" in 1539. Dodonaeus graduated from the University of Louvain in 1535. After working in Malines as a physician he moved to Vienna to assume the post of personal physician to Emperor Maximilian II, later he moved to Prague when Rudolph II succeeded Maximilian. In 1582 Dodonaeus was appointed professor of botany at the University of Leiden. The above offered work is Dodoens last and most comprehensive botanical work, incorporating material from a number of his earlier books, including the "Cruydeboeck". It is of interest, that he made here an attempt to an explanation of the parts of the plants. //Nissen BBI, 517.

Jodocus HONDIUS II (1594 -1629)
A superior rival to the pocket Ortelius atlas appeared about 1598, under the imprint of Barent Langenes and Cornelis Claesz. Claesz also published the Tabularum Geographicarum Contractarum, edition with texy by Petrus Bertius, in 1600. After the death of Cornelis Claesz in 1609, Jodocus Hondius II became the new publisher of the work, composed by 7 parts in 1, with engraved title-page and 220 full-page engraved maps in text. All the maps were newly engraved and slightly larger in size, because Hondius was not able to acquire the original plates. With the new plates the work was definitely improved and enjoyed a growing demand of the public, which at that time had the choice between the Atlas Minor by Mercator and Bertius' Tabularum Geographicarum. The 219 plates, with the oval world map appearing twice, were produced to illustrate a new version of the geography of Bertius, published in 1616. According to King, their correct attribution is by Hondius, after Mercator and Hondius, taken from Bertius, who was only responsible for revising his text again. Copperplates, in very good conditions. Amster … [Click Below for Full Description]
