'One of the earliest and most important collections of Voyages and Travels of the sixteenth century ' (Church). Undoubtedly a foundation work for any collection of Voyages and Travels. The 'most perfect work of that nature in any language whatsoever' (John Locke). Ramusio (1485-1557) served as Secretary to the Venetian Senate, and on retiring to Padua compiled this collection of narratives, including some manuscripts which had never been seen before, towards the end of his life. A planned fourth volume was never published as the manuscript was sadly destroyed shortly after his death by a fire at his publishers. As Harisse points out Ramusio was the first author to edit his work with care, avoiding errors and anachronisms perpetuated in previous copies of the travel narratives he included in his work. Each volume was reprinted several times, with later issues, as here, having new material missing from the first editions. The narratives include those of Columbus, Vasco … [Click Below for Full Description]

(BIBLE; English, Authorized.)
London: by Robert Barker, printer to the Kings most excellent Maiestie, 1613 [i.e. 1614]. London: by Robert Barker, printer to the Kings most excellent Maiestie,, 1613 [i.e. 1614]. Newly Translated out of the Originall Tongues: And with the former Translations diligently compared and revised, By his Majesties speciall commandement. [Bound with: The Booke of Common Prayer, Herrey's Two right profitable and fruitfull concordances, and The Whole Booke of Psalmes.] Four works in one volume, quarto (224 x 170 mm). Contemporary blind-panelled calf on wooden boards, metal cornerpieces and central bosses, lacking clasps (catches still present). BCP title printed in red and black. In two columns, black letter. Inner cornerpieces sometime moved about 2 cm along the boards to facilitate spine repair, new endpapers to style, marginal paper reinforcement to title leaf of BCP with some loss of lower outer frame but no text, marginal fraying to next two leaves not affecting text, the double-page map of Canaan loosely inserted (enabling it to be properly viewed), some soiling and browning, a few short marginal tears, overall a very good example of a well-used Jacobean household Bible. The King James Bible, or the Authorized Version, was, in its first edition at least, a folio for pulpit use. But James also intended it to displace the alarmingly radical Geneva Bible in the affections of his Protestant subjects, and new editions of the Authorized Version were soon printed in quarto as a domestic Bible to be carried to church or read at home, as the Geneva Bible had been. In this volume, the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Guicciardini, published by Jan Janszn., Arnhem and Petrus van der Keere, Amsterdam in 1613.Artists and Engravers: The author of this work: Lodovico Guicciardini (1521-1589): Italian merchant from aristocratic descent. He was born in Florence, a son of Jacopo Guicciardini. His uncle was the famous author Francesco Guicciardini (1483-1540) who wrote 'La historia di Italia'. The Guicciardini family established a presence in Antwerp and in 1541 Lodovico arrived to work with his uncle. At the same time they functioned as informents for the Medici's back home. He stayed until his death. At one point he was accused with his brother Giovan Battista of killing Gaspare Ducci, who they held resposible for their bancruptcy in 1543. Lodovico apparently started writing in 1552 and in 1556 he published his first work 'Comentarii della.', about European history. In 1567 he got the 'Descrittione.' published. He wrote a few more works. In 1569 he landed in jail because he critisized Alva's policies. In 1582 he landed in jail again because he apparently knew Jean Jaureguy, who tried to kill William of Orange, but he was released soon. Although he had been prosperous at times he ended a poor man. [Click Below for Full Description]
