ANDREINI, Giovanni Battista (1578-1650)
Milan: Geronimo Bordoni, 1613. 4to (221 x 165 mm). Engraved title, portrait, one engraved head-piece, one full-page and 38 half-page engravings by Cesare Bassano after Carlo Antonio Procaccini. 17th-century mottled calf, gilt spine. Short repaired tear in title and portrait, portrait slightly short, generally a very attractive copy in a near-contemporary binding. Provenance: purchased from E.P. Goldschmidt, 1962. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, containing the portrait found only in some copies. Italian literary scholars have speculated that Andreini's play influenced Milton during his trip to Italy, and is therefore a primary source for Paradise Lost. "The action is grandiose. With the Biblical story which forms the groundwork of the picture are interwoven many extravagances and that spectacular display which so pleased the public" (Joseph Spencer Kennard, The Italian Theatre). The performance included fantastical sets, which are captured in Bassano's engravings after the designs of Carlo Antonio Procaccini. Vinciana called this 5-act play "the most significant work of theatre in the seventeenth century." The son of Francesco and Isabella Andreini, the most famous actors of their age, Andreini also acted, using the name Leylio in his comedic performances in Paris. BL 17th-Century Italian I, p. 32; Brunet I:269; Cicognara 1423; Sander 6381; Vinciana 4125. From the Collection of Arthur & Charlotte Vershbow.

Hessel GERRITSZ (1581-1632)
King James, Pilate's Letter to the cross and Hate all for Jesus Quatro 9x6.5 Retail $3895.00 with 40% discount now thru Dec 25th Jesus Hate Bible and Pilates Letter Bible Because the Greek New Testament was written in Koine Greek, certain words were mistranslated. One of the trickiest word was the Greek term miseo. The King James Bible translates this as "hate." Because of this, in Luke 14:26, Jesus tells his followers "If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple." Harsh. But according to scholars of Koine, miseo does not quite mean "hate." Instead, it means to separate from, or to prefer less. Jesus was not telling his followers to hate their fathers and mothers, rather, he was warning them that they had to place their dedication to faith above earthly bonds It is also called a Great Letter Bible because of the Book of John Chapter 19, Verse 19 mistakenly reads: "Pilate wrote a letter instead of Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross" also contains a misprint of Emorite's instead of Amorite's in Genesis 10:16 . Bible Printing between 1613 and 1614 Mid December through Mid January Herbert notes it as "The true 1613 folio edition of King James' Bible; easily distinguishable from the other editions by its smaller type" resulting in 72 lines rather than 59. CHAMPLAIN, Samuel de (1567-1635)
Paris: Chez Pierre Le-Mur, 1613. Engraved map of Stage Harbor, from 'Les Voyages dv Sievr de Champlain', in excellent condition, map size: 6 x 9 1/2 inches, sheet size: 8 1/4 x 9 3/4 inches. A highly important map by Samuel de Champlain, and one of a series of the very first printed sea charts of North America This is a highly important and early map of what is now known as Stage Harbor, near Chatham, on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. It is one of a series of the very first printed sea charts of North America, devised by the great explorer Samuel de Champlain. From 1605 to 1606, Champlain explored the Massachusetts coast in search of a location to build a settlement that might be even better than the existing French base of Port Royal, that was establish in the spring of 1605 in Nova Scotia. In October, 1606 Champlain's pinnace became trapped on the shoals while rounding Cap Blanc (Cape Cod). The damaged ship made it down to Stage Harbor where for two weeks the men worked to repair the rudder of the ship. The local Monomoyick tribe did not take kindly to their presence, with the result that a few French sailors were killed. By this point, the ship had been repaired and Champlain ordered a hasty departure. The party then explored Nantucket Sound, but on their way back north they decided to visit the bay again to take revenge on the natives. However this sortie was unsuccessful, resulting in a few more Frenchmen losing their lives. Champlain then left the region for the relative security of Port Royal. Why the name 'port. fortuné' was given to such an improvident location … [Click Below for Full Description]

CHAMPLAIN, Samuel de (1567-1635)
Paris: Chez Pierre Le-Mur, 1613. Engraved map of Gloucester, Massachusetts, from 'Les Voyages dv Sievr de Champlain', in excellent condition, map size: 6 x 9 1/2 inches, sheet size: 8 1/4 x 10 inches. A highly important map by Samuel de Champlain, one of a series of the very first printed sea charts of North America This is a highly important map of what is now known as Stage Harbor, near Chatham, on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Philip Burden describes it as "one of the finest in the series" of what were the very first printed sea charts of North America, devised by the great explorer Samuel de Champlain. It is also the earliest map of this region. From 1605 to 1606, Champlain explored the Massachusetts coast in search of a location to build a settlement that might be even better than the existing French base of Port Royal, that was established in the spring of 1605 in Nova Scotia. Champlain's pinnace sailed into what later became known as Gloucester Harbor in September, 1606. The party stayed in the port for a few days, and found the location to be physically most agreeable for a potential settlement. However, they soon found the disposition of the indigenous peoples to be remarkably hostile, a problem that would ultimately drive the Frenchman away from the region all together. The harbour dominates the centre of the map, which is protected by a long narrow peninsula. Champlain's ship is shown anchored in the middle of the bay, at the head of a trail of depth soundings that lead to the mouth of the bay, where the map is adorned with an elegant compass rose. BESLER, BASILIUS
Prijs: Euro2.150,- (incl. lijst).

London: Robert Barker, 1613. VERY RARE FIRST EDITION 1612 KING JAMES 'hee' Bible The 1612 was the first edition of the KJB to be printed in the quarto size for personal use, and was the first to use Roman type. As it was preceded only by the 1611 folio or pulpit size edition, the very early 1612 printings still contained the printer's typos - including 'hee' at Ruth 3:15 and 'Emorite' instead of Amorite at Genesis 10:16, as this one does. Because they were meant for personal use and thus heavily used, (much more so than the folio edition) most of the relatively very few copies of this very first printing that have survived are in rough condition and missing some, if not all of the preliminary pages. This one is complete! A correct original John Speed's map of Canaan from another 1612 First Edition is included. That means that ALL of the preliminaries are present in this bible - making this a quite rare 407 year old survivor! This is Herbert #313, and is dated 1612 on the general title, 1612 on the New Testament title page, 1612 at the end of Revelation and 1612 on the title to 'Psalmes Collected into English' - for a total of 4 times! (Unlike some others on Ebay), this is a TRUE 1612 printed and originally bound in 1612! Condition: See pictures - Well used with expected edge chipping, especially to the preliminary and final pages , some with minor text loss. Damp stains as well as darkening. Part of the 'Psalms Collected' is mistakenly bound in between James 4 and 1 Peter. Remarkably few ink inscriptions on text pages, however typical inscriptions on blank pages - One is a … [Click Below for Full Description]

The Byzantines compiled scholia from ancient commentaries for elucidation. The Renaissance did not quite appreciate him. Until 1667 ca. 18 editions of his 'opera omnia' were published, not much. Hesiod's reception chiefly concerns myths and the motifs that he provides, and these motifs certainly appealed to mythographers, historians of religion, poets and painters. Includes detailed accounts of hydrographic surveys by the Indian Navy, including those in the Gulf. Montemayor, Jorge de.
[Bilingual French / Castellan]. Paris, De l'imprimerie d'Anthoine du Brueil, 1613. Small Octavo. Engraved titlepage, [6], 347, [21] pages. [Pagecount of 347 is incorrect and should be 694 because only every second page is imprinted with progressing numeration]. Hardcover / Half - leather of the 19th century. Binding in poor condition. Bookblock and interior in very good and firm condition. Faded dampstain to text only. Very RARE !! Jorge de Montemor (Spanish: Jorge de Montemayor) (1520 - 26 February 1561) was a Portuguese novelist and poet, who wrote almost exclusively in Spanish. His most famous work is a pastoral prose romance, the Diana (1559). He was born at Montemor-o-Velho (near Coimbra), whence he derived his name, the Spanish form of which is Montemayor. He seems to have studied music in his youth, and to have gone to Spain in 1543 as chorister in the suite of the Portuguese Infanta Maria, first wife of Philip II. In 1552 he went back to Portugal in the suite of the Infanta Juana, wife of João Manuel, Prince of Portugal, and on the death of this prince in 1554 returned to Spain. He is said to have served in the army, to have accompanied Philip II to England in 1555, and to have travelled in Italy and the Low Countries; but it is certain that his poetical works were published at Antwerp in 1554, and again in 1558. His reputation is based on a prose work, the Diana, a pastoral romance published about 1559. Shortly afterwards Montemor was killed in Piedmont, apparently in a love affair; a late edition of the Diana gives the exact date of his death. The Diana is genera … [Click Below for Full Description]
