London, 1613/11: Robert Barker, 1613. CONDITION: THERE IS A STORY BEHIND EVERY BLEMISH! Bible leaf collectors know that some leaves are hard to look at and others look as new as the day they left the printing press. The condition of a particular leaf reflects its history and is not an indication of its actual value. Perfect leaves are ones that have seen little or no use over the centuries in contrast to those that are scarred by the ravages of time. Unblemished leaves are unloved leaves because they have had little contact with sinners. Imperfect leaves tell a story. Some are torn and ripped and worn away by excessive use while others have burns or worm holes and still others are water stained by flood and sometimes even tears. Each ugly mark or stain is in fact a beautiful witness to the Word of God, which, "liveth and abideth forever." We offer Bible leaves as we acquire them letting their condition speak for themselves. All our leaves are sold as seen on eBay. Contact us for additional images or information. Choice Leaves, Finer than Gold, from the Word of God Taste and see! It's sweeter than honey!! Irisses - Basilius Besler, 1613
1613. IRISSES FROM BASILIUS BESLER'S FLORILEGIUM Copper engraving from the magnificent Hortus Eystettensis by Basilius Besler, published in 1613. Coloured by a later hand. Size (print) 48 x 38.5 cm. Besler (1561 - 1629) was a respected pharmacist and botanist from the Bavarian town of Nuremberg. He was in charge of the gardens of Johann Konrad von Gemmingen, Prince Bishop of Eichstätt. The bishop had the only important European botanical garden outside of Italy. In the centuries before Besler, the emphasis of botanical books had been on medicinal and culinary herbs, and these had usually been depicted in a crude manner. The images were often inadequate for identification, and had little claim to being aesthetic. The Hortus Eystettensis changed botanical art overnight. The plates were of garden flowers, herbs and vegetables and exotic plants. These were depicted near life-size in detail. The layout was artistically pleasing and quite modern in concept, with the hand-colouring adding greatly to the final effect. The work was first published in 1613 and consisted of 367 copper engravings, with an average of three plants per page, so that a total of 1084 species were depicted. The first edition was printed in 300 copies, which took four years to sell. The book was printed on large sheets measuring 57 x 46 cm. Two versions were produced, cheap black and white for use as a reference book, and a luxury version without text, printed on quality paper and lavishly hand-coloured. The luxury version sold for an exorbitant 500 florins, while the plain, uncoloured copies went for 35 flor … [Click Below for Full Description]

Grand Duchy of Lithuania - Willem Blaeu, 1613
1613. IMPORTANT WALL MAP OF THE GRAND DUCHY OF LITHUANIA AND THE DNIEPER RIVER “Magni Ducatus Lithuaniae, Caeterarumque Regionum Illi Adiacentium Exacta Descriptio. [Exact descripton of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and its neighbouring territories], copper engraving published in Amsterdam by Willem Blaeu in 1613 or later. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 76 x 106,5 cm. This superb wall map of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania had its beginning in 1586 when Prince Michael Radziwill commissioned M. Strubicz to survey the entire Lithuanian state which then included Poland. Strubicz's map was so accurate and detailed that it provided the basis for all subsequent maps of the area during the 17th and 18th centuries. Willem Blaeu first published his four-sheet map of Lithuania along with a two-sheet map of the Dnieper River in 1613 with the imprint “Guilhelmus Janssonius” below the legend at bottom left. He later added the name “Blaeu” to his name in order to differentiate himself from his rival, Jan Jansson. These maps of Lithuania and the Dnieper River, which had been engraved by Hessel Gerritsz, first appeared in Blaeu’s atlases in his Appendix in 1631, and were subsequently published in various editions through 1670. Following Blaeu's original 4-sheet version of the Gerritsz map, Blaeu and Jansson issued single sheet versions, the latter of which was re-issued by Van Waesberg and Moses Pitt at the end of the 17th century. The map covers the region from Riga to Smolensk in the north, and from Cracow to Kiev in the south, including parts of Poland, Russia, Ukraine and Latvi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Giovanni Battista Ramusio
Venice Appresso i Giunti, 1613. See Details. Delle Navigationi et Viaggi Raccolte da M. Gio. Battista Ramusio, In Tre Volumi Divise VOLUME PRIMO EXTREMELY RARE BOOK ILLUSTRATED WITH WOODCUTS !NO MAPS! 6TH EDITION ITALIAN LANGUAGE TEXT Publisher: In Venetia, Appresso I Giunti Copyright: 1613 CONDITION: This book is in poor condition. Hardcover/Rebound. This book has been hastily rebound. The current binding belonged to another book. The boards were glued onto spine merely to protect the manuscript. This extremely rare and hard to find volume of Ramusio's famous work I beautifully typeset and contains many woodcuts as well as printer's device on title page. The maps have unfortunately been excised. The text block is in surprisingly good shape for its age. There is some toning/browning and occasional foxing throughout the text. There is evidence of moisture damage along right hand corner. There is an old ink signature on the title page which reads Bendinelli Sauli. This book was likely housed in the library of the Bendinelli Sauli palace in Genoa. The palace is located in Via San Lorenzo at number 12 in the historic center of Genoa and is currently included in the list of buildings registered with the Rolli of Genoa. There is another ink inscription on the rear endpaper written in Italian. This book is a prime candidate for rebinding. Price reflects condition. Only reasonable offers will be considered. ~ Though he himself traveled little, Ramusio published Navigationi et Viaggi ("Navigations and Travels"); a collection of explorers' first-hand accounts of their travels. Books I III were first published in 1590, and then republished in 1596 together with books IV VI. The Faerie Queene is notable for its form: it is one of the longest poems in the English language as well as the work in which Spenser invented the verse form known as the Spenserian stanza. On a literal level, the poem follows several knights as a means to examine different virtues, and though the text is primarily an allegorical work, it can be read on several levels of allegory, including as praise (or, later, criticism) of Queen Elizabeth I. Bible, English. Authorized (i.e. King James Version). Apocrypha
Robert Barker, 1613. First and Second Editions (see below). Folio. 106 consecutive leaves, collates Iiii3-Ccccc6, complete thus. Superbly and sympathetically bound in recent dark brown quarter calf over dark brown wooden boards, single ornamental brass catch and clasp (catching on the lower cover in the English style), six raised bands on spine. In excellent condition, the paper stock crisp and unblemished (a few letters along fore-edges cropped). THE ENTIRE APOCRYPHA FROM THE GREAT KING JAMES, OR "AUTHORIZED" VERSION OF THE BIBLE. As is well known, the printer, Robert Barker, was chaotically and almost simultaneously printing and assembling copies of the First Edition (Great "He" Bible) together with the Second Edition (Great "She" Bible). Our copy is noteworthy as it is composed of exactly 50% "He" Bible sheets and 50% "She" Bible sheets, thereby exhibiting with perfect clarity the chaos of the printing operation that resulted in publication of what is today described as the 1611-1613 King James, or "Authorized" Version of the Bible. The translation itself is widely considered a towering achievement in English literature, a rare combination of textual beauty and painstaking scholarship, created by the most unlikely of all sources, namely: a committee. The KJV itself has been called "the most influential version of the most influential book in the world, in what is now its most influential language," "the most important book in English religion and culture", and "the most celebrated book in the English-speaking world." The bibliographic complexities of the Great "He" Bible … [Click Below for Full Description]

Novella, Cosme.
[Zaragoza, 1613]. Small 4to (200 x 150 mm). (25) ff. With the woodcut arms of Philip III of Spain on title-page. Loosely inserted in contemporary limp sheepskin parchment. Very rare first and only edition of a "memorial" addressed to the king, Philip III of Spain. Cosme Novella was initially denied permission to practice the profession of pharmacist in the apothecary of his father-in-law who had recently passed away. During the inspections by the "Colegio de Boticarios" (College of apothecaries) they had found deficiencies in the operation of the apothecary, but Novella was finally admitted after intervention of a municipal jury. In 1601 he was appointed as inspector to the pharmacy of the Hospital Real y General, where he found serious deficiencies in their preparations of medicines. This angered the management of the hospital, who held a high position in the College of apothecaries. The College restarted their inspections of Novella's business and closed his store. The dispute then grew to a bigger scale, involving the royal chapter of pharmacists and physicians. In the present "memorial" Novella presents his case to the King. Ultimately, the royal decree would be in favour of Novella, and his pharmacy would be permitted to re-open. - With manuscript note on title-page. Some faint waterstains, two tiny tears in the fore-edge margins and the paste-downs detached from the boards, separating the bookblock from its binding. A good copy. Early 20th-century vellum over boards, spine stamped and ruled in gilt, raised bands, a.e.g. Minor dust-soiling and edge wear. Modern bookplate of James Stevens Cox affixed to front pastedown, typed contents list tipped to front flyleaf. Small wormholes repaired on titlepage, inner margin of licence/errata leaf strengthened, last four leaves trimmed at top edge affecting headlines, minor occasional spotting. Overall very good. Rare first edition of this account of the life and career of García Hurtado de Mendoza, Captain General and later Viceroy of Peru, complete with the "Prologo" leaves, often lacking. Mendoza had a particularly controversial career in the New World. He commanded eight vessels bound for South America in 1557, and after arriving in Chile, Mendoza sent out various tributary expeditions across the Andes in an attempt to establish Spanish authority in a wider area and among the remoter regions. In addition to the inland expeditions, Mendoza sent two parties south to explore the coastline as far as Tierra del Fuego; one of these maritime journeys was commanded by Francisco de Ulloa, who provides an introductory note for the present work. Shortly thereafter, Mendoza was relieved of duty and ordered back to Spain, likely for abusing his authority with the indigenous peoples in South America. He was later pardoned and returned to the Americas in 1590 to serve as viceroy of Peru, where he spent almost a decade developing the economy and spreading Spanish culture in the region … [Click Below for Full Description]
