Montemayor, Jorge de.
Paris, De l'imprimerie d'Anthoine du Brueil, 1613. [Bilingual French / Castellan]. Small Octavo. Engraved titlepage, [6], 347, [21] pages. [Pagecount of 347 is incorrect and should be 694 because only every second page is imprinted with progressing numeration]. Hardcover / Half - leather of the 19th century. Binding in poor condition. Bookblock and interior in very good and firm condition. Faded dampstain to text only. Very RARE !! Jorge de Montemor (Spanish: Jorge de Montemayor) (1520 – 26 February 1561) was a Portuguese novelist and poet, who wrote almost exclusively in Spanish. His most famous work is a pastoral prose romance, the Diana (1559). He was born at Montemor-o-Velho (near Coimbra), whence he derived his name, the Spanish form of which is Montemayor. He seems to have studied music in his youth, and to have gone to Spain in 1543 as chorister in the suite of the Portuguese Infanta Maria, first wife of Philip II. In 1552 he went back to Portugal in the suite of the Infanta Juana, wife of João Manuel, Prince of Portugal, and on the death of this prince in 1554 returned to Spain. He is said to have served in the army, to have accompanied Philip II to England in 1555, and to have travelled in Italy and the Low Countries; but it is certain that his poetical works were published at Antwerp in 1554, and again in 1558. His reputation is based on a prose work, the Diana, a pastoral romance published about 1559. Shortly afterwards Montemor was killed in Piedmont, apparently in a love affair; a late edition of the Diana gives the exact date of his death. The Diana is general … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jodocus HONDIUS (1563 - 1612)
Exquisite portrait of two of the most important mapmakers during the Dutch dominance of cartography. Gerard Mercator is shown with his successor, Jodocus Hondius, seated at a table surrounded by the implements of their trade. The fine portrait is set within an elaborate strapwork framework that encompasses a map of Europe. The scene was engraved by Coletta Hondius, in tribute to her late husband, and appears in the Atlas from 1613 onwards. Very fine impression and original color. Minor professional repairs on centerfold. Van der Krogt 1, 104.

Superb example of an early King James Bible dated 1613. Newly rebacked with a complete Genealogies Adam to Christ at front. Complete Old and New Testament. The OT title page is a really nice facsimile with the NT title being all original. It contains a complete Psalms of David at the end which is rare to find this way. This is a small 8vo measuring 6.5 by 4.5 inches, very tight binding, the pages sculptured to form an intricate pattern. This is Herbert 326 considered by Franic Fry to be the true 1613 Octavo edition and a very nice example.

Jacques de BELLANGE (Nancy 1594 - 1638)
HONDIUS, Jodocus.
1613. Amsterdam: Henricus Hondius 1619, French text edition. Original colour. 345 x 475mm. Centre fold reinforced on verso. A classic 17th century map of the East Indies, decorated with strapwork cartouches, compass roses and a vignette sea battle representing the struggle between the Dutch and the Portuguese for control of the area. In his book 'Early Mapping of Southeast Asia' Suarez tells how this is 'one of the few maps to show any trace of Francis Drake's presence': the eastern coastline of Sulawasi, where Drake ran aground, is indented for the first time to reflect the problems Drake had there; and on the south of Java the otherwise dotted line representing the unknown coastline contains a bay where Drake landed, marked 'Huc Franciscus Dra. Appulit'. The sea battle top right illustrates the Battle of Fortune Island, just outside Manilla Bay, December 14th, 1600. The Dutch admiral Olivier van Noort sank the Spanish flagship San Diego but lost Eendracht, forcing him to break off his privateering activities off the Philippines. The wreck of the San Diego was discovered and the 34,000 recovered artefacts form a permanent exhibition at the Museum of the Filipino People. Hondius was a religious refugee in London from 1583, so it is likely that he became familiar with Drake's accounts during this time. On his return to Amsterdam he published an enlarged edition of Mercator's atlas, 1606, in which this map first appeared. KOEMAN: Me 27a; SUAREZ: p.193-4, illus. [Attributes: First Edition]

Famous book of emblems based on Egyptian, Greek, and Roman representations arranged in alphabetical order. Each entry consisted of a description of an allegorical figure depicted to embody the concept, which Ripa further explicated using references to classical literature. This collection came to be used by Renaissance artists, poets, and orators, to illustrate abstract concepts allegorically. It was particularly influential in the 17th and 18th centuries, quoted extensively. For example, Dutch painter Ve … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

London, 1613/11: Robert Barker, 1613. CONDITION: THERE IS A STORY BEHIND EVERY BLEMISH! Bible leaf collectors know that some leaves are hard to look at and others look as new as the day they left the printing press. The condition of a particular leaf reflects its history and is not an indication of its actual value. Perfect leaves are ones that have seen little or no use over the centuries in contrast to those that are scarred by the ravages of time. Unblemished leaves are unloved leaves because they have had little contact with sinners. Imperfect leaves tell a story. Some are torn and ripped and worn away by excessive use while others have burns or worm holes and still others are water stained by flood and sometimes even tears. Each ugly mark or stain is in fact a beautiful witness to the Word of God, which, "liveth and abideth forever." We offer Bible leaves as we acquire them letting their condition speak for themselves. Robert Barker
London, 1613. The Great “She” Bible, the “authorized version” or King James Bible, one of the greatest monuments of English literature. This edition is known as the “She” Bible for the reading “She went into the citie” in Ruth 3:15. In this copy he error “Judas” for “Jesus” in Matthew 26:36 is corrected with a pasted-on slip. Fry styles this the “first edition, second issue,” though it is more properly the second edition. “The general title is usually dated 1613, though the NT title bears the date 1611. Probably the greater part of the book was printed in 1611, but the publication, for some reason or other, was delayed till 1613. . . . Smith suggests [the delay resulted from] an accident in the printing-office which destroyed a large number of sheets” (Herbert). One of the masterpieces of the English language, the King James Bible is surely the greatest literary work ever created by committee. In the preface, Miles Smith, one of the dozens of translators, commented on the importance of the work: “Translation it is that openeth the window, to let in the light; that breaketh the shell, that we may eat the kernel; that putteth aside the curtain, that we may look into the most Holy place; that removeth the cover of the well, that we may come by the water.” “For every Englishman who had read Sidney or Spenser, or had seen Shakespeare acted at the Globe, there were hundreds who had read or heard the Bible with close attention as the words of God. The effect of the continual domestic study of the book upon the national character, imagination and intelligence for nearly three centu … [Click Below for Full Description]

All our leaves are sold as seen on eBay. Contact us for additional images or information. Choice Leaves, Finer than Gold, from the Word of God Taste and see! It's sweeter than honey!! MERCATOR (Gerard).
[Amsterdam, 1613-1616]. 355 x 523 mm. Koeman, 8000:1A.
