ANDREINI, Giovanni Battista (1578-1650)
Milan: Geronimo Bordoni, 1613. 4to (221 x 165 mm). Engraved title, portrait, one engraved head-piece, one full-page and 38 half-page engravings by Cesare Bassano after Carlo Antonio Procaccini. 17th-century mottled calf, gilt spine. Short repaired tear in title and portrait, portrait slightly short, generally a very attractive copy in a near-contemporary binding. Provenance: purchased from E.P. Goldschmidt, 1962. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, containing the portrait found only in some copies. Italian literary scholars have speculated that Andreini's play influenced Milton during his trip to Italy, and is therefore a primary source for Paradise Lost. "The action is grandiose. With the Biblical story which forms the groundwork of the picture are interwoven many extravagances and that spectacular display which so pleased the public" (Joseph Spencer Kennard, The Italian Theatre). The performance included fantastical sets, which are captured in Bassano's engravings after the designs of Carlo Antonio Procaccini. Vinciana called this 5-act play "the most significant work of theatre in the seventeenth century." The son of Francesco and Isabella Andreini, the most famous actors of their age, Andreini also acted, using the name Leylio in his comedic performances in Paris. BL 17th-Century Italian I, p. 32; Brunet I:269; Cicognara 1423; Sander 6381; Vinciana 4125. From the Collection of Arthur & Charlotte Vershbow.

HELLOUIN
1613. in a neat hand, their signatures with elaborate flourishes against forgery, certifying that 'honneste homme' (respectable person) Pierre Vallée of Argentan, with his wife Marie Guilbert and wife's brother Filipet Guilbert, have renounced to Ravan de Morel, Sieur of Aubigny [2 miles north of Falaise], all their rights in an annual 40 livres from Martin Vieillot (part of an annual mortgage of 50 livres contracted in 1592), in consideration of the Sieur d'Aubigny's single payment to the husband of 400 livres, vellum, 3 sides 12½" x 9", contemporary summary on side 4, Argentan (35 miles south of Caen), 16th April first occurrences of names neatly underlined in later blue pencil The Morel family had been at Aubigny since 1522. The Sieur d'Aubigny is described in the document as "Knight of the Order of the King and Gentleman in Ordinary of His Chamber", identifying him as the father rather than the son of the same Christian name, (here spelt Ravein). He married in 1565 and was also Chamberlain to the Duke of Alençon. (See La Chesnaye, who gives his rank as Count). Apparently Aubigny was already paying 40 livres a year to Vieillot, by a contract signed at Falaise in 1611, so it was simpler to give Vallée the lump sum and reduce Vieillot's debt to Vallée. All parties are anxious that the sum of 400 livres, clearly in trust for the wife, is kept secure, and the husband undertakes to reinvest it in other regular payment or heritable property. Her brother stands surety for the husband in this regard. Other names mentioned are Martin Pantin, Curé of Aubigny, proxy for Morel; Jacq … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Frankfurt), getruckt im Jahr, 1613 - 19 x 15 cm. 26 num. Seiten. Flugschrift, gebunden in schlichtem modernem Pappband. *VD17 23:238848M. [Click Below for Full Description]

Hortus Eystettensis -
Alt in reliefierter Goldleiste gerahmt.
