Sorgum fructu rubro // Sorgo fructu albo

Eichstatt: 1613, 1st edition. Hand-coloured engraving. 21 x 17 1/4 inches. Basil Besler published "Hortus Eystettensis", the earliest large folio botanical, at Eichstatt near Nuremburg, in 1613. He worked on the drawings for the 374 copper engravings over a period of sixteen years using the plants in the garden of Bishop Johann Conrad von Gemmingen, his patron. Depicted in this florilegium were flowers, herbs, vegetables and newly discovered plants such as tobacco and peppers. Besler was, in modern terms, a botanist and horticulturalist, and he was familiar with real and alleged medicinal properties of various plants. Besler had the good fortune to live at a time when exotic plants were being shipped to Europe from all over the world. The garden that he organized and illustrated for his patron was both ornamental and experimental, and the large book he had engraved after his drawings was unique. The prints, made by a team of master engravers, are strong and exquisitely done.

        L'ADAMO. Sacra rappresentazione.

(1613) e ?Maddalena? (1617)". Così Diz. Treccani,I, p. 428.

LA VISIONE. POEMA DI DANTE ALIGHIERI DIVISO IN INFERNO, PURGATORIO & PARADISO. Di nuovo con ogni diligenza ristampato.

ad instantia di Francesco Leni 1613 In-24 p. (mm. 101x70), p. pergamena coeva, 608 pp.num., 16 cc.nn., titolo al frontesp. entro cornice decorata, testo in carattere corsivo. Dedica a Gio. Battista Minardi. - Mambelli,53. Corto del margine super.; 1 c. (pp. 95/96) molto ben restaur. per angolo infer. mancante (incluse alcune lettere del testo, qui sapientemente trascritte a mano), altrimenti esemplare ben conservato.

A Publication of His Ma[jes]ties Edict, And Severe Censure Against

1613. James I Prohibits Dueling [Dueling]. [Great Britain]. James I [1566-1625], King of England. A Publication of His Ma[jes]ties Edict, And Severe Censure Against Private Combats and Combatants; Whether Within his Highnesse Dominions, Or Without; With their Seconds, Accomplices, And Adhaerents: Straitly Charging All Officers, And Other his Ma[jes]ties Subiects, To Use no Connivencie, Or Remisse Proceeding Toward Such Offenders: For the Necessary and Timely Prevention of Those Heavy Events, Whereunto Aswell Kingdomes, As Worthy Families Become Obnoxious, By the Odious and Enormous Impieties Inevitably Subsequent Thereupon. London: Imprinted by Robert Barker, 1613 [i.e. 1614]. [iv], 119, [1] pp. (Original endleaves, counted in the ESTC collation, renewed.) Quarto (7" x 6-1/2"). Recent cloth, gilt title to spine. Large woodcut arms of Great Britain to verso of title page, large woodcut head-piece. Some toning to text, (very) faint dampstaining to foot of text block, some soiling to title page and verso of final leaf, internally clean. * Only edition, one of two issues from the same year. A series of high-profile duels between leading courtiers in 1613 prompted James I to launch a campaign to suppress the practice. He prohibited dueling in a 1613 proclamation, classifying it a serious offense punishable in Star Chamber. He also reorganized the Court of Chivalry to serve as a substitute to the field of honor. (In a sense, these actions laid the foundation of the modern laws of libel and slander.) Several related rules and decrees followed. The proclamations and later edicts are collected in this book. Counting both issues, OCLC locates no copies in North American law libraries. We located a copy, however, at the law library of George Washington University. English Short-Title Catalogue S100678.

This Latin edition was published c. 1613-1630 and is notable for its attention to detail along the coastlines, with place names arranged with lovely symmetry. In addition, the prominent depiction of a Northwest Passage illustrates contemporary beliefs in the existence of a direct route to the East. The map is in good condition with full margins and has reinforcement on the lower portion of the original fold. Michael Mercator (c.1567-1600), belonged to arguably the most famous family of mapmakers of all time. This map is a fine exemplar of the Mercator legacy. Jodocus Hondius bought Mercator's plates in 1604 and continued to issue this map. (Burden 87)

1613-1658 Small octavo, 5.6 x 3.3 inches. Third edition. A-K8, L3. The title-page of this copy is toned, a bit chipped around the edges. The margins crop the side notes throughout. This book retells the story of Wat Tyler, a layer of roof tiles from Kent who was the leader of the peasants rebellion in England in 1381, during the reign of Richard II. Tyler was beheaded in 1381 after meeting with the King in Smithfield. On that occasion, one of those in attendance insulted Tyler, who, in attempting to protect his honor by attacking the supposed slanderer, received mortal wounds. Tyler was beheaded and his head hung up on London Bridge. This little treatise retells the peasants rebellion in detail.

Ornithogalum Hispanicum spicatum [Star-of-Bethlehem]; Polygonatum vulgatius [Multiflorous seal of Solomon]; Polygonatum maius [Common seal of Solomon]

Eichstatt: 1613, 1st edition. Hand-coloured engraving. Wormhole in bottom margin and small loss to the bottom edge, minor soiling, otherwise, very good. 21 x 17 1/2 inches.

The Treasurie of Auncient and Moderne Times, Containing the learned Collections, Iudicious Readings, and Memorable Observations: Not only Divine, Morall, and Philosophicall: but also, Politicall, Martiall, Historicall, Astrologicall, &c. Translated out of that worthy Spanish Gentleman, Pedro Mexio. And M. Francesco Sansouino, that famous Italian. As also of those Honourable Frenchmen, Anthonie de Verdier, Lord of Vaupriuaz: Loys Guyon, Sieur de la Nauche, Counsellor unto the King: Claudius Gruget, Parisian, &c

William Jaggard, 1613 A very rare and strange book. This volume was published as a complete book in 1613; a second volume was added later in 1619. it is well titled 'a treasurie' - being a collection of stories, histories, facts and beliefs jumbled together in no discernable order. It is in 9 'bookes' each divided into chapters. As an example booke 4 moves smoothly from the Kingdome of Persia in chapter 1 to 'In defence of the Gaules' in chapter 2, to 'Of the Switzers Cantones' in chapter 3. There are fascinating snippets for example, about Orders of Knights and the nature of 'Dreames'. The book has been rebound in a full leather binding with raised bands, and gilt decoration and titles. It has numerous woodcuts as headers and as decoration to initial letters in chapters. The title page and preliminaries are missing and there is also some loss from the index at the rear which ends with the contents of the 4th booke. There is a dedication to 'virtuous Lord Anne D'Urfe' and a table of the Authors Names. Both of these have some loss and have had paper repairs. The first booke has 'Alex Beedie, his book' written in ink across the top margin. Generally the contents are sound and clean apart from the odd brown stain and browning to page edges. A few pages are frayed at the edges - including pages 405-408 and 961 onwards. 963 has small loss of text and the first index page has loss affecting part of the text. There is an ink inscription to the back of page 965.

        America

Amsterdam:, 1613. Size: 500 x 375 mm. Framed size: 800 x 680 mm. Copper engraving with hand colouring with gold highlights. Fine condition. This map was engraved by Jodocus Hondius for his first edition of Gerard Mercator's Atlas. It was issued alongside the America sive India Nova of Michael Mercator in 1595. However, like all cartography before, it still retains an enlarged North American continent. Various scenes taken from the earlier volumes of de Bry's Grand Voyages adorn the whole. Particularly notable is the native Brazilian scene illustrating the method used to make a local beverage. There are various galleons, kayaks and Indian canoes along with a pair of birds perched on the inset.

        Toutes Les Oeuvres

Paris: for Raphael du Petit Val à Rouen, 1613. Scarce, French-language edition of Du Laurens’ works, with a set of 26 anatomical engravings derived from Vesalius and others. "This is the second edition of the French translation of Du Laurens’ collected works... which preceded the publication of the Latin text. In addition to the author's textbook of anatomy and his account of scrofula, the volume contains works on geriatrics, melancholy and other mental afflictions, and an early opthalmological work which describes the anatomy and diseases of the eye. The volume has an exceptionally well-engraved title page, the author's engraved portrait, and numerous historical and ornamental woodcut initials." — Heirs of Hippocrates, p. 144. According to Krivatsy, the French translation of Du Laurens’ Opera Omnia was first published by P. Mettayer in Paris in 1613, and was reprinted by Raphael Du Petit Val in Rouen in 1621. Our copy has an engraved title signed by du Petit Val in Rouen but dated 1613; the Rouen librairie presumably recycled some of the original Paris-printed titles, modifying the original engraving with a cancel. Du Laurens (1558-1609) was the court physician to Marie de Medicis and Henry IV and previously had been professor at the University of Montpellier. * Wellcome I, 1942; Krivatsy, 3506, 3507; Heirs of Hippocrates, 389..         Dialogue of the Dogs

Santa Cruz: Foolscap Press. Hard Cover. Fine. Hard Cover. Number 21 of 90 copies for sale (10 hors commerce). The Foolscap Press is known for its finely made, hand crafted books of works of literature. This new work from the press continues their tradition of surprising and delighting the reader. Their description of the booko says that readers may not realize that Cervantes wrote a series of shorter pieces between Parts 1 and 2 of Don Quixote, which were published as Exemplary Novels in 1613. The translator, Harriet de Onis, pointed out that prior to Cervantes, the novella or short story, as in The Arabian Nights and The Canterbury Tales, was a series of stories linked together by a common thread. With Exemplary Novels, each of the twelve stories is complete in itself, diverse in theme and form. In this story, the mastiff Berganza, along with his mat-mate Cipion find themselves with the ability to speak. The two dogs have a lot to say and may have only one short night in which to say it, as it is unknown when this gift of speech might be taken away. The book has an inventive structure, with full-page scenes of the dogs set in a three-dimensional diorama in the front and back covers of the book creating a box-like structure. There are additional text drawings. Set in Dante and Pepita type and printed letterpress on Magnani Revere paper. The pattern on the soft brown covers resemble the hair of a dog! 9.25 x 11.5 inches. In fine condition. 52 pages. PRI/102512.
