Braun & Hogenberg 1595 - Original antique birds-eye-view map of Namur, on the Meuse River in Belgium, printed more than 415 years ago. This spectacular town plan was published by Braun & Hogenberg, Cologne, in their Atlas Civitates Orbis Terrarum, circa 1595. The image area measures 35 x 43.6 cm [13¾" x 17¼"] on a double-folio sheet, with generous margins on all sides. The title is contained with a decorative cartouche: Namurcum, Elegantissima Ad Mosae Flume Civitas, and three figures are drawn in the foreground. Original hand color. There's a full-page of Latin text on the reverse side, with a large initial cap. Condition: This map is in very good condition, with a vertical center fold, as issued, and no marks, rips, or tears. Please see the scans, which include a view of the reverse side, and feel free to ask any questions. This is an original, authentic antique map, not a reproduction or modern reprint, and it is fully guaranteed to be genuine. It was compiled by Georg Braun and Franz Hogenberg, publishers of history's most opulent collection of town maps and illustrations. This map would make a very handsome and dramatic display in your den or office. It would also make a perfect gift, and we'll include our helpful framing tips for your reference, along with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Greek Printing - Aeschines und Demosthenes:
Ingolstadt, Sartorius, 1595. circa 17 x 11,3 cm., 6 Bll., 464 SS., 1 w. Bl., mit Druckermarke auf dem Titel. Blindgeprägtes Schweinsleder d. Zt. auf Holzdeckeln mit Schließen VD16 A 401; IA 100.911; Hoffmann I, 22; Schweiger I, 5; Stalla 1766.

DIACONO PAOLO.
Plantin, 1595. In 8° (mm 155x95); pagg. (12), 337, (3), le ultime due bianche. Ex libris di Horace Walpole. Marca tipografica al frontespizio. Tagli a spruzzo. Adams, P-499. BMC, Short title, 210. Graesse V, 176.

Saxony-Wittenberg, in modern Saxony-Anhalt, became subject to the margravate of Meissen, ruled by the Wettin dynasty in 1423. This established a new and powerful state, occupying large portions of the present Free State of Saxony, Thuringia, Saxony-Anhalt and Bavaria (Coburg and its environs). Although the centre of this state was far to the southeast of the former Saxony, it came to be referred to as Upper Saxony and then simply Saxony, while the former Saxon territories were now known as Lower Saxony. In 1485, Saxony was split. A collateral line of the Wettin princes received what later became Thuringia and founded several small states there (see Ernestine duchies). The remaining Saxon state became still more powerful and was known in the 18th century for its cultural achievements, although it was politically weaker than Prussia and Austria, states which oppressed Saxony from the north and south, respectively.; - vita of the artist: Abraham Ortelius(1527 ?1598) was a Flemish cartographer and geographer, generally recognized as the creator of the first modern atlas, and the first to imagine that the continents were joint together before drifting to their present position. He began as a map-engraver, in 1547 and entered the Antwerp guild of St Luke as afsetter van Karten. PRIMAUDAYE (DE LA) PIERRE
appresso Giovanni Guerigli, 1595. Cm. 21, pp. (16) 566 (2). Cfr. Iccu e per l'edizione … [Click Below for Full Description]
