Preiseinband der Sorbonne
Genf, Guillaume Lemaire, 1595. 4°. 4 Bll. (le. w.), 1910 (falsch 1924) Spp., 37 Bll., mit Druckerm. a. d. Tit.Gering berieben, vord.

Third edition, a literal reprint of the much enlarged second edition published in 1584 in Vianen by the same printer. Both the second and the third edition were published without name of place or printer and were dated 1551, no doubt because of its hazardous contents. First published in 1542-44 in Deventer by Dirk van Borne. The Book of miracles is the chief book of David Joris, a glasspainter by trade and the most important leader of Dutch anabaptism in the 1530's after the debacle of Munster. He strongly rejected violence and consistently advocated a peaceful approach, but he also represented a dangerous mysticism which could, and indeed did among some of his many followers, result in libertinism. FOESIO, Anutio, HIPPOCRATE
Andrea Wecheli, Francofurdi. [Click Below for Full Description]

CAMOCIO, Giovanni Francesco.
Venice, c. 1595. Four sheets conjoined, total 680 x 630mm. Remargined, minor restoration. The four top-right sheets from an extremely rare and finely rendered 12 sheet wall map of Europe, only a few examples known. Top left is Lapland, with the end of the Gulf of Finland, with the site of St Petersburg, a century before its founding and Archangel; top right should be Novaya Zemlya, but it is missing; bottom right is the course of the Volga, the Sea of Azov and the north coast of the Black Sea, with Tartar tents marked; bottom left is the Crimea, the mouth of the Danube, with Moscow, Kiev, Vilnius and Riga marked. The map originally appeared in Camocio's atlas, the 'Quattro Parte Del Mondo' which consisted of four wall maps of Asia, Africa, Europe, America and a small world map, copies of which are known to exist in the Museo Correr, Venice, Yale University Library and the James Ford Bell Library, Minnesota. Camocio was one of the principal mapmakers of the 'Lafreri' school, whose output signalled the transition between the maps of Ptolemy and the maps of Mercator and Ortelius. As such he is one of the founders of mapmaking as we know it today. It is a testament to the skills of the Venetian school of mapmakers, both in its virtuoso execution and use of up-to-date geographical knowlege.

ORTELIUS, Abraham
[Antwerp, 1595]. DescriptionDouble-page engraved map. NotesThe Maris Pacifici map was first issued in 1590. It is based upon Gerard Mercator's world map of 1569, with details from 25 Portuguese manuscript maps of Bartolomeo de Lasso which Plancius obtained and later used for his own world map. Ortelius shows the Moluccas and the Philippines, already the site of considerable Dutch activity and a misshapen Japan. An odd Isla de Plata appears above Japan. Guam (Isla de Ladrones) is shown. New Guinea appears very different to Ortelius' world map of 1588, suggesting he may have drawn additional information from an unrecorded voyage. Among other notable features, it is detached from Terra Australis. The Solomons, or Melanesia, are located, as are some of the islands of Micronesia. This was the first map to focus on the Pacific Ocean. The map reflects a much smaller body of water than the true size of the Pacific. The treatment of America and most notably the Northwest Coast is reminiscent of Hondius' America. This map and the Hondius and Le Clerc rare map of 1589 (known only in the 1602 edition) have a curious and not fully understood relationship as to which is truly the first map of the Pacific, although because no example of the 1589 Hondius-Le Clerc has been discovered, this map retains primacy.Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum is widely regarded as the first modern atlas. At the time of its publication, it was the most expensive book ever produced. Between 1570 and 1612, it was issued in 31 editions and seven languages. The present example is the first state of the map, appe … [Click Below for Full Description]

Scatola moderna di contenimento in mezzo marocchino rosso. 67 pagine, mal numerate 76 per errore all'ultima pagina; 1 pagina bianca. [Click Below for Full Description]

De le stelle fisse "represents the first printed star atlas, containing maps of the stars as opposed to simple pictures of constellations, and introducing the practice of identifying stars by letter, a method later adopted and expanded by Bayer" (Norman). [Click Below for Full Description]

Dante Aligheiri
RARE FIRST MODERN CRITICAL EDITION OF DANTE'S DIVINE COMEDY WITH WOODCUTS La Divina Commedia di Dante Alighieri Nobile Fiorentino ridotta a miglior lezione dagli Accademici della Crusca... Firenze: Domenico Manzani, 1595. A rare 16th century illustrated first edition of the famous occult work by Dante Alighieri, his "Divina Commedia", this time presented in his native Tuscan tongue in an important imprint consisting of the first actual attempt at a modern critical edition by the first language academy in the world (founded in 1582). During the general meeting of the Crusca Academy on August 29th, 1590, Giambatista Deti proposed that a corrected text of the Divine Comedy was a necessary prerequisite for the compilation of the projected Vocabolario. Between November 1591 and July 1594 the academicians collated Bembo's Aldine 1502 Dante edition against approximately 100 manuscripts, including forty from the Laurentian library, fifty from private hands, one belonging to Luigi Alamanni (which had "Varchi's corrections based on seven manuscripts") and another belonging to Cosimo Bartoli (with variants from four other manuscripts). The responsibility of editing Dante fell to Giambatista Deti with the agreement that, "the academicians he asked to help were obligated to do so." Printed in Florence by Domenico Manzani (active 1583-1606), also known as Domenico del Gatto (of the Cat) for his printer's mark, the Crusca edition presented emendations and variants with justifications for these in both the inside and outside margins. The edition also included a new folding diagram depictin … [Click Below for Full Description]

Dante Alighieri
Up for sale is an extremely rare 1595 edition of "La Divina Commedia" by author Dante Alighieri. Illustrated by Antonio Manetti and engraved and printed by the famous Domenico Manzani. The book was published by Accademia Della Crusca in Florence in 1595. The book has a hard cover and is wrapped in leather. Measurements are in the photos. There is rubbing and wear on the cover, but the spine appears to be solid for the most part. Some staining on Manetti's map and light foxing on some pages here and there. But overall the book is in good condition for its age!!!! The book has been gone through and I believe it is whole and not missing any pages. The engraved title page, Manneti's map and the printer's page are critical and all there. This Crusca edition presented emendations and variants with justifications for these in both the inside and outside margins. This book represented the first modern attempt at a modern critical edition. This extremely rare 1595 edition of THE DIVINE COMEDY has great historical significance, and would make a great gift for a book collector or historian. The book is written in Italian. The book came from a surgeon's personal library in Pennsylvania. If you would like more pictures please ask. I can only put 12 pictures up on eBay for a listing. Thank you for looking!!!

1595. good. This is a folio printing; very few editions of the Geneva Bible were printed in folio format. This example measures at 11.5" x 8" x 3.5". Margins are adequate, but not wide. Boards believed original. Note the very old strap repairs. The Bible was recently rebacked in a conservative but serviceable style. I have collated the entire book and believe it to be complete except for the original fly leaves and a map which should have been located immediately in front of the New Testament. Includes the Apocrypha. The first ten leaves have been remargined or mounted, with some loss of text. There is light to moderate soiling throughout, moreso with the first and last few gatherings of course. The last gathering or two in the "Psalmes of David in Meeter" have weak gutters, but all pages are still quite attached. Despite the faults, this is a very pleasing and readable nearly complete copy of a book that is normally found incomplete or in fragments. Herbert #225. Box - 22.

LEO HEBREW, (alias Judá Abravanel).
M. D. XCV. [1595]. In 8º (12x8 cm) col: 816, [47] págs. [Click Below for Full Description]

PRIMAUDAYE (DE LA) PIERRE
In Venetia, appresso Giovanni Guerigli, 1595. Cm. 21, pp. (16) 566 (2). Cfr. Iccu e per … [Click Below for Full Description]
