On the back, an ownership inscription Riggall Colln Sale June 6th, 7th & 8th 1901 Lot 326» Nagler suggested that the print was after a painting or design by Friedrich Sustris or Christoph Schwartz, but Geissler has rejected the suggestion after Schwartz.
M. D. XCV. [1595]. In 8º (12x8 cm) col: 816, [47] pags. [Click Below for Full Description]

London by Richard Field for Bonham Norton 1595. RARE PRINTING IN ENGLISH FROM THE 1500's. Very Scarce and Very Important. Brisson, Barnabé.
[Heidelberg], Hieronymus Commelinus, 1595. 8vo. (12), 378 pp., final blank f. (Bound with): Sylburg, Friedrich. Saracenica, sive Moamethica. Ibid., 1595. (8), 152 pp. Both works have printer's woodcut device to title page. Contemp. blindstamped vellum. I: An uncommon edition. The book was first published by Prevosteau in Paris in 1590 from the author's notes ("ex adversariis"). Essentially the sources drawn on are purely those of ancient writers, both Greek and Latin, from whom there is extensive quotation. Book I is concerned with the Persian rulers and their history, book II with religious and social life, and book III with military organisation and prowess, both ancient and modern. Brisson (1531-91) was a distinguished jurist and author of important works, notably the legal code of Henri III, but no traveller. He was hanged by the "Ligueurs" on 15 Nov. 1591. The "Typographus lectori" makes it very clear how difficult were the circumstances in which Brisson found himself, the very walls of the city being shaken by bombardment, and the shadow of death being seen everywhere, and the very opening paragraph of the text, in which Brisson speaks of "Regii nominis decus, imperii maiestatem, totumque regni statum", has contemporary resonance. Friedrich Sylburg, who acted as editor and proof-reader for the Commelin atelier, has added just a few notes at the end, the preface to these claiming that the original Paris edition of 1590 had been full of errors of transcription and editing. - II: Bound with this is the first edition of Sylburg's "Saracenica", a "theological compilation w … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris: Abel Angelier, 1595. Small folio, bound in sixes. (12 3/4 x 8 3/8 inches). 3 parts in one. [24], 1-209, [1, blank]; 211-523, [1, blank]; 1-231, [1] pp. Large woodcut printer's device to title [Renouard, Marques Typographiques Parisennes 551], woodcut vignettes and initials. Errata on verso of terminal leaf. Nineteenth century red morocco, bound by Trautz-Bauzonnet, spine with raised bands in six compartments, lettered in gilt the second and third, red morocco pastedowns elaborately panelled in gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt edges First complete edition of Montaigne's Essays, enlarged and editied by his adopted daughter Marie le Jars de Gournay. This works comprises all three parts (two parts only had been previously published in Bordeaux in 1580), complete with Montaigne's final additions and corrections from his unpublished manuscripts, as well as Montaigne's 'Au Lecteur' dated 1580 and Gournay's preface. The latter does not appear in the simultaneous Paris edition by Michel Sonnius. Montaigne's Essays are justly celebrated as the essence of humanist thought during the French Rennaissance and the progenitor of the personal essay as a literary genre. His work, and its focus on the nature of man and his search for self knowledge via life experience, would have a profound influence on writers as varied as Descartes to Emerson to Nietzche and on the fields of philosophy, psychology, education and more. In his his final essay, On Experience, Montaigne, who suffered from kidney stones, writes eloquently on health, medicine and suffering in the 16th century.
