Brisson, Barnabé.
[Heidelberg], Hieronymus Commelinus, 1595. 8vo. (12), 378 pp., final blank f. (Bound with): Sylburg, Friedrich. Saracenica, sive Moamethica. Ibid., 1595. (8), 152 pp. Both works have printer's woodcut device to title page. Contemp. blindstamped vellum. I: An uncommon edition. The book was first published by Prevosteau in Paris in 1590 from the author's notes ("ex adversariis"). Essentially the sources drawn on are purely those of ancient writers, both Greek and Latin, from whom there is extensive quotation. Book I is concerned with the Persian rulers and their history, book II with religious and social life, and book III with military organisation and prowess, both ancient and modern. Brisson (1531-91) was a distinguished jurist and author of important works, notably the legal code of Henri III, but no traveller. He was hanged by the "Ligueurs" on 15 Nov. 1591. The "Typographus lectori" makes it very clear how difficult were the circumstances in which Brisson found himself, the very walls of the city being shaken by bombardment, and the shadow of death being seen everywhere, and the very opening paragraph of the text, in which Brisson speaks of "Regii nominis decus, imperii maiestatem, totumque regni statum", has contemporary resonance. Friedrich Sylburg, who acted as editor and proof-reader for the Commelin atelier, has added just a few notes at the end, the preface to these claiming that the original Paris edition of 1590 had been full of errors of transcription and editing. - II: Bound with this is the first edition of Sylburg's "Saracenica", a "theological compilation w … [Click Below for Full Description]

MONTAIGNE, Michel Eyquem de (1533-1592)
Paris: Abel Angelier, 1595. Small folio, bound in sixes. (12 3/4 x 8 3/8 inches). 3 parts in one. [24], 1-209, [1, blank]; 211-523, [1, blank]; 1-231, [1] pp. Large woodcut printer's device to title [Renouard, Marques Typographiques Parisennes 551], woodcut vignettes and initials. Errata on verso of terminal leaf. Nineteenth century red morocco, bound by Trautz-Bauzonnet, spine with raised bands in six compartments, lettered in gilt the second and third, red morocco pastedowns elaborately panelled in gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt edges First complete edition of Montaigne's Essays, enlarged and editied by his adopted daughter Marie le Jars de Gournay. This works comprises all three parts (two parts only had been previously published in Bordeaux in 1580), complete with Montaigne's final additions and corrections from his unpublished manuscripts, as well as Montaigne's 'Au Lecteur' dated 1580 and Gournay's preface. The latter does not appear in the simultaneous Paris edition by Michel Sonnius. Montaigne's Essays are justly celebrated as the essence of humanist thought during the French Rennaissance and the progenitor of the personal essay as a literary genre. His work, and its focus on the nature of man and his search for self knowledge via life experience, would have a profound influence on writers as varied as Descartes to Emerson to Nietzche and on the fields of philosophy, psychology, education and more. In his his final essay, On Experience, Montaigne, who suffered from kidney stones, writes eloquently on health, medicine and suffering in the 16th century. RODENBURGH, Theodore.
Alblas, pp. 50-51; Borst & Verkruijsse, eds., pp. 486-487; Praz, p. 475. First edition, in Dutch, of a remarkable example of the cross-fertilization of English and Dutch literature in the early 17th century. Rodenburgh's Dutch adaption of Sir Philip Sidney's The defence of poesie (1595) and of excerpts from Thomas Wilson's The arte of rhetorique form the theoretical prose core of the present work about poetry and expresses this view as well. Rodenburgh complemented it with a great number of exemplary poems, short verse plays, occasional verse and emblematic poems, both borrowed and original, many published here for the first time. With early notes about the content on an endleaf. With occasional minor stains, mostly in the foot margin, a couple small marginal tears and a few tiny marginal worm holes, but otherwise in very good condition and with generous margins. With the vellum slightly soiled and one headband partly detached, but binding still good. A landmark in the history of Dutch poetry.

ORTELIUS, Abraham
Antwerp: Abraham Ortelius, 1595. unbound. Map. Engraving with hand color. Image measures 15 1/4" x 19 3/4". This stunning map of the Kingdoms of Fez and Morocco covers the northwestern part of Africa in beautiful detail. Depicts the Barbary Coast and the southern part of Spain and the Straits of Gibraltar, including Madera and the Canary Islands with a note reading "The Canary islands are seven in number, but together with smaller islands there are in fact eleven". The map offers extensive detail on the several tribes and kingdoms in west and north Africa. Topographical and geographical features such as mountains, forests and cities are beautifully rendered in profile.During this time, the Barbary Pirates operated in this area, despite of which Morocco managed to trade sugar, tobacco, gold and leather with France and England.Ortelius based this map on the 1564 Africa map by Gastaldi and maps from Livio Sanuto's Africa atlas. A large inset of the Congo region in the top left of the map was based on Pigafetta's 1591 map of the Congo. A beautifully engraved title cartouche adorns the lower right of the map. Illustrations of ships and a sea monster are included in the Atlantic Ocean. This map was published in the 1595 edition of Ortelius's famous "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum," which is historically considered the first modern atlas. Based on the Latin text on verso, only 500 copies of this particular atlas were ever printed (van der Broecke 177). The map is in good condition with minimal wear and toning along the original centerfold. Minor foxing in the margins with Latin text on ve … [Click Below for Full Description]

1595. Rare Lafrery school map of Hungary embraces the area between Vienna, Styria in Slovenia, Zagreb in Croatia, Belgrade in Serbia and Drohobyczka in the South of Poland. Arnoldo di Arnoldi was a Flemish cartographer, born as Arnold Scherpensiel, who worked with Magini in Bologna between 1595-1600 and Antonius Floriani and Florimi in Siena from 1600 to his death two years later. Matteo Florimi probably did an apprenticeship in the workshops of Antonio Lafrery and Claudio Duchetti and belongs because of his style of engraving to a late Lafrery school. All of his works are rare on the market. This rare map is copied after more common map by Gerhard Mercator, first published in 1585. References: Bifolco – Ronca, p. 388; Tooley, p. 23.

Bon
