Cambridge: Imprinted by Thomas Thomas, 1586. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. First published (in Latin) in 1581 by an obscure Protestant minister named Salnac of Castres in French Languedoc, "Harmony," attempts to blend together for adoption by the Protestant churches of France and Belgium a number of statements of faith made in the 16th century. These include the famous Augsburg Confession issued in 1530 as well as others from Switzerland, Saxony, France, England, Belgium, Bohemia, and elsewhere. Notes explicating the "Harmony" were written by Simon Goulart (1543-1628), who left France for Geneva as a young man after his conversion to Protestantism. A prolific writer, Goulart authored more than 50 books, including poetry, essays, sermons, meditations, and histories. Our version of the "Harmony," the first in English, also includes a Scottish Confession of Faith, and it was apparently this item that, according to STC, resulted in an order for the book's seizure by the government of Queen Elizabeth. This seizure has surely played a role in the rarity of the book on the market in modern times (no copy, for example, is listed by ABPC after 1981).. 170 x 110 mm. (7 x 4 1/2"). 16 p.l., 111, 202-608 (i. e., 518), [42], 24, [4] pp. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. Attractive dark brown divinity-style morocco by Hayday, neatly rejointed, covers panelled in blind with rules and decorative rolls, raised bands, spine decorated in blind with plain and decorative bands and quatrefoil centerpieces, gilt titling in two spine panels, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Mendoza, Juan Gonzalez de (1545-1618)
Appresso Andrea Muschio, Venetia (Venice) 1586 - [30]+462+[40] pages with woodcut printer's device to title and through out at the terminus of sections. Duodecimo (6 1/4" x 4 1/2") bound in original limp vellum. Translated from the Spanish by Francesco Avanzi. (Adams G868; Lust 23: Sabin 2779) First Italian edition. Juan Gonzalez de Mendoza's history was the first systematic study of Chinese society, the first history of contemporary China published in a European language, the first book printed in Europe to contain an illustration of Chinese characters, and the most influential and detailed work on China prepared in the sixteenth century. This history is an editing by Mendoza of the experiences of other priests not only in China, but also in much of the New World and Asia generally. Mendoza used both primary and secondary sources: accounts of Dominican and Franciscan friars, personal conversations with native Chinese residing in Spain and Jesuit letters. In particular, Mendoza added accounts of three missionary voyages from 1577, 1579 and 1581. It covers most aspects of Chinese society in depth - from chronology to government organization, to the Chinese language, to the country's legal system business practices and industry. It also makes important observations on the nature of Chinese writing and its ideographic nature. First published in 1885 in Rome as Historia de las cosas mas notables ritos y costumbres del gran reyno de China. Mendoza's history was a huge popular success for several reasons: the prevailing thirst for knowledge in the vernacular about the Far East th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Woodcut head- and tailpieces, and initials. 18th-century vellum, on spine honey label with gilt title. Red and blue mottled edges. A fine copy, old repair at the gutter of title, partly affecting an unique letter. Provenance: 'Ex Dono Franciscus ', Aloysius Cac.'; 'Ex libris Julii Travaglini Romani', by a 19th-century hand (both inscriptions inked on recto of the front endpaper). On title a scored early ownership note. Even after the end of the tremors the earthquake remained a subject of interest in the learned milieu of the Este court, and the Ferrarese historian Sardi - one of the interlocutors of Buoni's Dialogue (see item 6) - introduced therefore a section on this topic in his collection of discourses. Scherer, Georg.
Appresso i Gioliti. Short refutation making short work of the possibility that Pope Joan ever existed, here translated into Italian from German by Nicolo Pierio. A Jesuit priest and Austrian witch hunter responsible for the Plainacher Witch Affair of 1583 (which led to the only case of witch-burning in Vienna), Scherer (1540-1605) here "proves" there was never a female pope using various sources, including the Bible. It was clearly a popular text, as DeBacker-Sommervogel notes that there were three editions of this translation published in 1586 by three different printers, two in Venice and one in Milan. The title is printed within an illustrated woodcut border and the text offers illustrated initials plus head- and tailpieces. Provenance: Bookplate of Avvocato Bubani Francesco and a catalogue clipping (in Italian) on front pastedown. Of this edition we locate only five U.S. libraries and one Canadian one reporting ownership. One other U.S. library reports owning a different 1586 edition.

Sanders, Nicholas (a.k.a., Sander, Saunder, Saunders).
Typis Bartholomaei Bonfadini, 1586. Sanders (ca. 1530-81) was a convert to Catholicism following his refusal in 1560 to take the Oath of Supremacy. Having fled England, he lived variously at Rome and Louvain. The present work is "his most influential. . . . Its textual history is complicated. Sander left it unfinished. Only one incomplete manuscript is known, partially annotated by [Robert] Persons [the Jesuit]. The first edition, nominally published in Cologne in 1585, actually appeared from the press of Jean Foigny at Rheims. Its editor, Edward Rishton, reworked at least book 3" (DNB online). The text is a detailed account of the religious troubles in England during the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary Tudor, and Elizabeth I, with => many references to Zwinglianism and Calvinism. At the end is John Hart's anonymous account ("Diarium rerum gestarum in Turri Londinensi") of his imprisonment in the Tower of London, containing also a list of persons imprisoned or executed in the Tower from 1580 to 1584. This is the second edition and the first printing of the work at Rome: It is enlarged with the just-noted "Diarium" and with "other substantial additions by Robert Persons who saw it through the press" (Allison and Rogers). Provenance: Purchased from Ludwig Rosenthal's shop in 2000; in a private collection until 2016.

- VD 16, A-3269; Wilhelmi/Seck 82; Adams A-1718; Hoffmann I, 253 f.; Graecogermania, Griechischstudien deutscher Humanisten (Ausstellungskatalog 1989) Nr. 92. MATTIOLI, Pietro Andrea.
Frankfurt: Feyer, 1586. First edition, contemporarily colored, of the first edition of Camerarius's version of Mattioli's great herbal. This edition contains the Gesner/Camerarius suite of woodcuts. Gesner had been preparing material for a massive historia plantarum but died before finishing the task; Camerarius acquired the material, utilized the woodcuts in the present work and supplemented them with his own. They are remarkable in their scientific detail, especially the enlarged depictions of floral structure, seeds, and fruit. This is the first time that such representation was consistently followed, and marks the beginning of what only much later became a convention in scientific botanical illustration, when the taxonomic importance of these details was fully appreciated.

They first appeared in Camerarius' recension of Mattioli, De plantis epitome utilissima of the same year (which is a different text to the above, and not merely a Latin version of the same). In addition to the botanical cuts, the German edition contains seven woodcuts of distilling apparatus.

In the Vorred, Camerarius describes in detail the edition history of this book, and of the woodblocks in particular. Not all of the Gesner woodblocks were finished, when Camerarius set out to edit Mattioli's text. In supervising the cutting of the already executed designs of the blocks, he took much care in assuring they were botanically correct. In the preface he gives a list of woodcuts already finished, but not botanically correct, and describes how the depicted configur … [Click Below for Full Description]

GARZONI (Tommaso)]
- Paris, Felix Le Mangnier, 1586.

[Click Below for Full Description]
