LAVATER, LUDWIG (1527-1586)
Zürich, heirs of Christoph Froschauer the younger, 1586. 8vo. (16) 127 lvs. Eighteenth-century marbled paper-covered boards. VD 16 L 826; Rudolphi 821; Vischer C 1088. First Latin edition of Ludwig Lavater's sermons on 1 Samuel 25. The ten sermons on Nabal were first published in German in 1584, but apparently there also was a demand for a Latin edition. Lavater, the son-in-law of Heinrich Bullinger, was a Swiss Reformed theologian who studied in Zurich, Strasbourg, Paris, and Lausanne. Already in 1550 he was appointed Archdeacon at the Grossmünster in Zurich and he also briefly served as Antistes of the Zurich church as the successor of Rudolf Gwalther. Lavater was a prolific author, publishing homilies, commentaries, a survey of the liturgical practices of the Zurich church, a history of the Lord's supper controversy, as well as biographies of Bullinger and Konrad Pellikan. - Some annotations on upper pastedown and first free endpaper, binding slightly rubbed.

LUSIGNAN DE CHYPRE (Étienne).
Paris, Guillaume Le Noir, 1586. Deux ouvrages en un volume petit in-4 de (4)ff., 128 ff. ; (7)ff., (1)f.blc., 40 ff.
GESNER or GESSNER, CONRAD 1516-1565.
Frankfort. Joannis Wecheli. 1586 and 1585. 2 volumes bound in one, quarto 14 x 9 1/2 inches, in crude boards, solid but would benefit from a binding. Liber II QUADRUPEDIBUS OVIPARIS- title with woodcut, (iv), 119 pages and 19 woodcuts illustrations. Liber III- title with woodcut (xii), 806, (26) pages erratically paginated but text compete as a-Xx6 plus index Yy-Zz6 (i)- illustrated with approximately 230 FINE WOODCUTS OF BIRDS. Volumes II and III of this magnum opus on the natural world. Oviparous quadrupeds - egg producing animals such as crocodiles and tortoises and the splendid third volume on BIRDS. The total works in this encyclopaedic work was five but each is complete in itself. Two marginal tears and occasional browning in the gutter but a reasonable copy of a book often in poor condition. Conrad Gesner was one of the great polymaths of the Renaissance and his work is an encyclopaedia of contemporary knowledge, intended to replace not only mediaeval compilations but even Aristotle's work of the same title. It was many times reprinted. and remained the standard reference book even as late as Linne and beyond, because neither Linne nor Ray included illustrations. (PMM 77). The illustrations of birds are attributed to Lucas Schan or Lucas Schram of Strasbourg. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

DU PETIT-THOUARS, Louis-Marie Aubert.
, . . BMC NH, p. 493; Nissen, BBI 564; Stafleu & Cowan 1586. Extensively illustrated work on orchids from the East African islands of France, Bourbon and Madagascar, by the French traveller and botanist Du Petit-Thouars (1758-1831), a brother of the well-known marine officer Abel-Aubert Du Petit-Thouars.The plates were published separately between 1804 and 1822, and were issued together with the text (in two parts) as quarto (with coloured plates) and octavo (uncoloured). All these different issues explain the different collations of this work. Our copy has the complete text, though it ends with a catchword. The plates in our copy are continuously numbered, though the numbering of the copy described by Stafleu & Cowan slightly differs.Old owner's inscription cut from right upper corner of the title-page, the text and a few plates foxed and a few minor tears in the margins of the plates. A good copy.
