Agostino CARRACCI (Bologna 1557 - Parma 1602)
Acquaforte, 1586, datata e firmata in lastra in basso a destra. [Click Below for Full Description]

Natale BONIFACIO (Sebenico 1537- ? 1592)
Bulino, 1586, nel cartiglio in basso a sinistra: Domenico Fontana da/ Mili Diocesi di Como/ Inventore et Conduttore Sull'obelisco: DIVO CAES. DIVI/ IVLII. F. AUGUSTO/ TLCAES. DIVI AVG/F. AUGUS. SACRUM. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Natale BONIFACIO (Sebenico 1537- ? 1592)
Acquaforte e bulino, circa 1586, monogrammate in lastra. Etching and engraving, 1586 circa, signed with monogram on plate. After a drawing of Giovanni Guerra. Beautiful work, printed on contemporary laid paper, minor paper tears perfectly repaired, otherwise in excellent condition. When St. Peter's square was reor … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

[ANDREAE, Johann Valentin].
Ad 1: First edition of an encyclopaedic work by the German theologian Johann Valentin Andreae (1586-1654), who called it a Christian fable book. It is divided into three "books" which are divided into several "manipuli". For example, the first manipulus contains brief texts on alchemy, antipathy, the Arabic language, Johann Arndt, astrology, oppression, Tommaso Campanella, cardinals, illiterates, kabbalah, patience, symbols, weeds, etc.Ad 2: First edition of a theological work by the Dutch Remonstrant Timan van Gessel (Timannus Gesselius, ca. 1591-1664). It contains five chapters, the first dealing with the holy scripture, the second with the "modern" church, the third and fourth with the creed, the fifth with peace.Ad 1: engraved title-page slightly damaged at the fore-edge margin, slightly browned; ad 2: name of the author added in ink on title-page, small stain at foot of title-page, a few faint, marginal water stains in the last few leaves. Venetiis (Venice): Apud Iuntas (Giuntas Press), 1586. Very scarce folio copy of this heavily illustrated Giuntas Press imprint of the medical works of Galen, a native of Trent, presented in its original green tinted vellum binding, the spine with three ribs and a gilt title label, as shown. Galen was a physician of the emperors Ferdinand I , Maximilian I and Rudolf II. A 2nd century Roman citizen, Galen was famed for his prodigious writing on medicine and surgery, skills he honed while treating wounded gladiators. His books contributed much to medieval medicine in Europe and throughout the Arabic world of the time. Many of his concepts held influence to numerous scholars and writers, spanning well over the next 1500 years. That's not to say he didn't make some egregious mistakes-the notion of the four bodily humors, the relation of astrology to medicine, and the common use of blood-letting for almost any illness or disease are all ideas whose roots can be traced back to Galen's work. Although he made some mistakes, as with many in antiquity, his positive contributions to medicine are monumental. Sans lieu ni nom d'imprimeur, 1586. in-8. 114pp. Cartonnage moderne genre ancien. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Cologne (Koln): Gerardus Campen, 1586. Very Good. A rare plate book of the history of the Netherlands, featuring a great number of Hogenburg "geschichtblatter" together with the famous map of the Netherlands (which at that time included modern Belgium), and became the prototype for future maps up to c. 1830. Published by Gerardus Campen in Cologne in 1586, the work contains 164 plates all double page except for one single leaf plate. The hand coloured Leo Belgicus map is present and has 2 short folding tears and is a little toned but is otherwise very good. The plates are generally in excellent condition. We believe the book is lacking 4 of the double page plates and the engraved main title page, and approximately 12 leaves of text, although the erratic pagination makes this difficult to be certain. Attractive period calf bindings , raised bands and gilt tooled spine, missing a piece from the foot of the spine. Retaining the original blanks the work collates Title (to the Appendix) [2] 738pp + 4 pp plates + [7] + map with several gaps in the pagination and some page numbers repeated with a "b". Rubens, Peter Paul (Siegen 1577 ? Antwerp 1640)
1586. Fortified town at a mountainous bay. Before the harbour ships and boats ? in Feininger-like depiction ? searched rescue. On the peninsular in the foreground two churches, a shepherd with his flock, and farmers running away. Engraving by Schelte à Bolswert (Bolsward, Frisia, 1586 ? Antwerp 1659). Inscribed: .P.P. Rubbens (sic!) pinxit . / S a Bolswert fecit. 12 × 16? in (30.6 × 42.7 cm). From Schneevogt 53 & Hollstein 305-325, IV (of V). ? Not in Rosenberg (2nd ed.) ? From the set of the so-called Small Landscapes after Rubens. ? With the address of Aegidius (Gillis) Hendriks in Antwerp (Gillis Hendricx excudit / Antwerpiae Cum privilegio), before that of Jacques Philippe Le Bas (Lebas, 1707 Paris 1783). ? Wurzbach, Bolswert 86, too, reckons the Hendricx address as the fourth of five states while generally saying in advance: ?For a long period Martinus van den Enden was almost the only publisher (of Bolswert?s) plates. But in many cases G. Hendricx, too, is ? the first and best address.? ? With four-liner in Latin under the motto En quo discordia ciues. ? On wide-margined strong laid paper with nearly invisible centerfold. ? The margins on the back with remains of earlier framing. Otherwise untouched. Wonderful impression determined by a vibrant chiaroscuro with still slight plate dirt and of a matchless faithfulness.

Hendrick GOLTZIUS (Mulbrecht 1559 - Haarlem 1617)
"Bulino, 1586, firmato in lastra, in basso a sinistra ""HG. fecit."" e numerato 5. "Engraving, 1586, signed on plate in lower left corner ""HG. fecit."" and numbered ""5"". Beautiful example, printed on contemporary laid paper with watermark "crowned coat of Arms with fleur-de-Lis", trimmed to the paltearm, smal … [Click Below for Full Description]
