BODINUS IOANNES[BODINUS IOANNES]
Parisiis, apud Iacobum Dupuy sub signo Samaritanae. Cm. 33, pp. (8) 779 (61). Cfr. Graesse I, 460; inoltre, per ulteriori approfondimenti bibliografici, cfr. J. Bodin, "I sei libri dello Stato", voll. I-II-III.
Claudio DUCHET (Duchetti)
Roma. Acquaforte e bulino, 1586, firmata in lastra dall’editore. [Click Below for Full Description]

A finely drawn chart of the Mediterranean by Joan Oliva (fl.1570-1614), a leading member of the Oliva family, a cartographic dynasty who dominated portolan production in Europe during the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Charts signed by no fewer than 16 different members of the Oliva family are recorded between 1538 and 1673, and individual members apparently worked throughout the Mediterranean world, as their charts originate from Mallorca, Messina, Naples, Livorno, Florence, Venice, Malta, Palermo, and Marseilles. The exact relationships between the various members are unclear, but Joan appears to have been one of the most prolific and highly regarded. PINDARUS
Pindar was a 5th-century BC Ancient Greek poet who is remembered for his poetic odes. These odes were written in honor of victors and champions of athletic games and contests. He grouped these odes into four distinct groups of games - Olympian, Pythian, Nemean, and Isthmian Games. These odes praised foot-races, chariot-races, wrestling matches, horse-races, and even flute-playing. Each of these odes begins with some sort of homage to a Greek god or Muse and then aligns the athletic champion with a mythological god or hero - quite the praise! This late 16th-century printing was published by Henri Estienne in Geneva in 1586. This edition is the only edition to contain the notes and commentary of Isaac Casaubon, Estienne's son-in-law. 1586. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. An incredible rare first edition of Jean Le Frere's "Complete History of Civil Wars" - a collection of stories, accounts, and important aspects of wars in France and Flanders in the late 16th-century. These wars predominantly fall under the French Wars of Religion, the military operations between the Catholics and the Huguenots. This particular tome covers the events from October 1570 through April 1582, and none of the events mentioned in this tome are repeated from the first volume. Famous events during that time period include: · St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre · Death of Charles IX · Wedding of Henry of Navarre · Formation of the Catholic League. [Attributes: First Edition]

EMPEROR THEODOSIUS II (401-450); ET AL. [Edited by Jacques Cujas (1522-1590)]. Codicis Theodosiani libri xvi. Imppp. Theodosii, Valentiniani, Martiani...Novellae Constitutiones. Tituli ex corpore Codicis Gregoriani. Tituli ex corpore Codicis Hermogeniani...XII. Tabular. Fragmenta...[&c.]. Paris: Apud Sebastianum Nivellium, 1586. A grand collection of legal codes and other fragments, with pride of place given to the Theodosian Code, promulgated on the 1st of January 439. The idea of the Code was first proposed by the Emperor Theodosius II in 429 and its intent was to codify the laws from the Emperor Constantine to the present time - with special emphasis on the rise of Christianity in the Empire and its influence on the Empire's legal framework. Twenty-two scholars, working in two teams over nine years, eventually produced the Code, which along with the Justinian Code and the Napoleonic Code stand among the greatest accomplishments of Western legal codification. Included in this edition are also the Codex Gregorianus (291-94) and Codex Hermogenianus (295), both useful sources, but lacking the depth and comprehensiveness of the Theodosian Code. Aside from these major works are a number of minor works, including fragments from the Twelve Tables of Rome (here nicely reproduced in black and red print, preserving the archaic and archaeological feel of the remaining artifacts), as well as a helpful timeline which records the chronology of various laws, decrees, and other legal effects of the late Empire.
