MATTIOLI, P. A.
Frankfurt, J. Feyrabend, 1586. 4to (222 x 175 mm). pp (xii), 1003, (29), with printer's device on title and 1003 woodcuts in text; title with a small stain, outer margin a bit frayed with two small tears, some very light browning of the paper as is usual with this edition, a large, attractive copy in contemporary German blindstamped pigskin over boards, panels in blind enclosing an armorial device in blind signed 'G.K.' and with legend 'Des H. Remi Keisertumswappen', with initials 'I S V S' and dated 1607 on upper cover, different arms with legend 'Insigni ad Ducum et Electo Saxo' on lower cover. The first Camerarius edition, containing the first appearance of the Gesner/Camerarius suite of woodcuts. Gesner had been preparing material for a massive historia plantarum but died before finishing the task; Camerarius acquired the material, utilised the woodcuts in the present work and supplemented them with his own. They are remarkable in their scientific detail, especially the enlarged depictions of floral structure, seeds, and fruit. This is the first time that such representation was consistently followed, and marks the beginning of what became a convention in scientific botanical illustration only much later, when the taxonomic importance of these details was fully appreciated. Provenance: Dukes of Saxony (see above); Giovanni Casaretto (1812-1879), Italian botanist and traveller, and author of 'Novarum stirpium brasiliensium decades', Genoa 1842; his herbarium is at the Universities of Turin and Genoa. GALILEI, Galileo.
First collected edition of the works of Galileo, edited by Carlo Manolessi, and appearing only a year after his death. This was the edition in which Newton and his later contemporaries read their Galileo.

The volumes contain not only most of the major works written and published over his lifetime, but also substantial unpublished material, both by Galileo himself as well as by his supporters and critics. Many of these items were provided to the editor by Vincenzo Viviani, Galileo's friend and disciple, including a number of Galileo's hitherto unpublished letters and experiments and La Bilancetta, his first scientific work, written in 1586. The Dialogo was of course on the Index and was not included in editions of the Opere until 1744.

A feature of this edition is that each work has its own separate title page, imprint and pagination, which has resulted in several copies being broken up, the individual tracts being sold individually.

Carlo & Favaro 251; Cinti 132; Riccardi I 518-9.. 2 vols., 4to (228 x 167 mm), contemporary flexible vellum, fully complete I: pp. [28], 48, 48, [8], 160, [4], 68, 127, [4], 264, 43, including allegorical frontispiece signed Stefano della Bella, engraved portrait of Galileo by Villamoena, and with large folding plate of proportional compass; II: pp. [2], 60, [16], 104, [4], 105-156, 48, [8], 179, [1], [2], 53-106, [2], 103-126, [8], 238 (i.e. 242), [6]. Venetia, Pietro Dusinelli, 1586. Folio. Nice later (around 1950) half polished calf, raised bands, 4 compartments gilt. Titlepage with a beautifull renaissance caryatid border in woodcut and with the coat of arms of the Duke of Aragon. Title with 2 small stamps. (4),92 leaves + 2 unnumbered leaves (at sign. The opening initial in the preface has been cut out, with a bit of loss of a few letters on verso. ¶ The very rare first edition, the only edition in the original form, of Collado's famous work, being "the first really detailed, well-illustrated technical manual on both the theory and practice of artillery" (A.R. Hall in Ballistics in the 17th century)."The greatest interest of this work as far as pyrotechnics are concerned is contained in Chapter 11 which is entitled, "Of...fires which can be adopted for use in times of festivity...The text of the 1586 edition describes these items (a line rocket, a vertical and horizontal wheel, and a device called Spanish 'Las Granadas'), but they are not illustrated. This book contains some of the earliest and fullest descriptions of recreative fireworks." (Chris Philip, C 070.4)."Very rare, and one of the earliest works, if not the earliest, dealing exclusively with artillery.
