Joseph - Juste Scaliger). - Filologo francese d'origine italiana (Agen 1540 - Leida 1609), figlio di Giulio Cesare. Eccelse nello studio dell'antichità per la perfetta padronanza del latino e del greco cui unì anche la conoscenza dell'arabo e dell'ebraico. Dopo la notte di s. Bartolomeo, S., calvinista dal 1562, si rifugiò a Ginevra e vi ebbe una cattedra (1572 - 74); nel 1593 successe a Giusto Lipsio nell'univ. di Leida, dove ebbe a scolari D. Heinsius, F. Dousa, U. Grozio. In qualunque testo classico egli mise mano, lasciò la sua impronta: Varrone, Festo, Appendix Vergiliana, Ausonio, gli elegiaci, Teocrito, Bione, Mosco, Manilio. L'edizione di quest'ultimo lo portò ad affrontare problemi astrologici, astronomici, cronologici, donde il De emendatione temporum (1583), che pone su nuove basi l'antica geniale ricostruzione del Chronicon di Eusebio, e il Thesaurus temporum (1606); a lui si deve l'introduzione del periodo giuliano in cronologia. Er hat zudem Matthiolus' Epitome derart verbessert und vermehrt, dass Treviranus hier von einem beinahe neuen Werk spricht; typographisch großzügig gestaltet, mit einem Holzschnitt pro Seite. - 18 Blätter mit teils ausgebesserten Wurmspuren. Vi si comprende il racconto dettagliato degli avvenimenti che riguardano la Repubblica di Genova dal 1528 al 1550. Jacopo Bonfadio (nato a Gazano, sul lago di Garda, intorno al 1509), ebbe l'incarico di storiografo ufficiale della Repubblica ed occupò per molti anni la cattedra di filosofia all'università di Genova, dove fu giustiziato nel 1550, con l'accusa di sodomia, che verosimilmente occultava quella di eresia. Antverpiae Ambivaritor, Antverpiae (Anvers) 1586 -1587, in-4 (17x22cm), relié. - Very rare collection of engravings of first edition of two complete sets of gods and nymphs represented marine Length and edited by Philip Galle in Antwerp. The set consists of 34 plates, 167 mm by 217 mm, and numbered etched on copper and two headpieces title. The first set of male deities entitled Semideorum marinorum amnicorumque sigillariae imagine perelegantes in picturae statuariaeque artis tyronum usum, was conducted in 1586, while the second series, Nimpharum oceanitidum ephydridum potamidum naiadum lynadumque icons in gratiam picturae studiosae ivventutis deliniatae scalptae and editae has philip. Gallaeo, dedicated to female deities, published the following year, in 1587. Note that a collection entitled Nimpharum icons had previously appeared in 1583, but did not contain the 17 engravings. The last plank Nimpharum bear the signatures of Hiero Wierix and Ioann. Collaert. Binding contemporary in full vellum by little flaps, smooth spine tooled, head, title to the pen.
