MATTIOLI, Pietro Andrea.
Frankfurt: Feyer, 1586. With nearly 1000 contemporarily hand colored woodcuts. First edition, contemporarily colored, of the first edition of Camerarius's version of Mattioli's great herbal. This edition contains the Gesner/Camerarius suite of woodcuts. Gesner had been preparing material for a massive historia plantarum but died before finishing the task; Camerarius acquired the material, utilized the woodcuts in the present work and supplemented them with his own. They are remarkable in their scientific detail, especially the enlarged depictions of floral structure, seeds, and fruit. This is the first time that such representation was consistently followed, and marks the beginning of what only much later became a convention in scientific botanical illustration, when the taxonomic importance of these details was fully appreciated. They first appeared in Camerarius' recension of Mattioli, De plantis epitome utilissima of the same year (which is a different text to the above, and not merely a Latin version of the same). In addition to the botanical cuts, the German edition contains seven woodcuts of distilling apparatus. In the Vorred, Camerarius describes in detail the edition history of this book, and of the woodblocks in particular. Not all of the Gesner woodblocks were finished, when Camerarius set out to edit Mattioli's text. In supervising the cutting of the already executed designs of the blocks, he took much care in assuring they were botanically correct. In the preface he gives a list of woodcuts already finished, but not botanically correct, and describes how the de … [Click Below for Full Description]

Santes PAGNINO, Jérônimo da Azambuja OLEASTER
Petrum Landry [Pierre Landry]. New edition, the first edition having been published in Lisbon in 1556 and reprinted many times. Date colophon. 1585 Title page in red and black. Brand of printer in the title page. Printing on both columns. Many inscriptions written in pen in the margins and on the back of the title page. Edition adorned headbands, initials and tail-lamp. Full contemporary parchment. Smooth back with title pen and remains a small pen drawing on the back. Traces of laces. Good copy. Cient Pagnino was certainly one of the greatest biblical scholars and philologists of his time; Florentine, he followed the teachings of Savonarola and received the protection of the Medici for his erudition and his oratorical talents. His biblical commentaries even earned him the admiration of the rabbis, for his commitment to the letter of the Hebrew. Jeronimo da Azambuja is responsible for this edition, he glazed her notes and comments. He was himself, although not belonging to the same generation as Pagnino (died in 1541) as a famous commentator of the Bible, including its interest in Hebrew. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Natale BONIFACIO (Sebenico 1537- ? 1592)
1586. Acquaforte e bulino, circa 1586, monogrammate in lastra. Etching and engraving, 1586 circa, signed with monogram on plate. After a drawing of Giovanni Guerra. Beautiful work, printed on contemporary laid paper, minor paper tears perfectly repaired, otherwise in excellent condition. When St. Peter's square wa … [Click Below for Full Description]

DU PETIT-THOUARS, Louis-Marie Aubert.
, . . BMC NH, p. 493; Nissen, BBI 564; Stafleu & Cowan 1586. Extensively illustrated work on orchids from the East African islands of France, Bourbon and Madagascar, by the French traveller and botanist Du Petit-Thouars (1758-1831), a brother of the well-known marine officer Abel-Aubert Du Petit-Thouars.The plates were published separately between 1804 and 1822, and were issued together with the text (in two parts) as quarto (with coloured plates) and octavo (uncoloured). All these different issues explain the different collations of this work. Our copy has the complete text, though it ends with a catchword. The plates in our copy are continuously numbered, though the numbering of the copy described by Stafleu & Cowan slightly differs.Old owner's inscription cut from right upper corner of the title-page, the text and a few plates foxed and a few minor tears in the margins of the plates. (Adams V.743. J. (JESUITS)
Woodcut Jesuit emblem on title within a typographical frame. Text printed throughout in italic. Ruled in red. 2 p.l., 330, [4] pp. 8vo, bound in a superb inlaid mosaic "à répétition" morocco binding with a navy blue base & a large gilt decor of red, citron, & pale brown morocco onlays of stars & quatrefoils, spine similarly decorated, pink silk endpapers, attributable to Nicolas-Denis Derôme (full description below), a.e.g. Rome: "in Collegio Societatis Jesu," 1586. The extremely rare first publication by the Jesuits written to establish a plan of studies meant for layman as well as priests, which included for the first time the humanities - literature, history, drama, etc. - as well as the traditional clerical fields of philosophy and theology. This dramatic change made clear that the literary and humanistic program of the Renaissance was compatible with the Scholastic program of the Middle Ages. The Ratio Studiorum, an exposition of principles, standardized on a global basis the highly influential system of Jesuit education which continued for centuries. Their commitment to education had great ramifications for both the Jesuit Order as well as the entire Catholic Church. The present copy, printed only in 100 or 120 copies, is bound in a magnificent mosaic binding attributable to Nicolas-Denis Derôme and comes from the library of Paul Girardot de Préfond, with his characteristic morocco bookplate. Our copy also contains annotations by the German Jesuit priest Jakob Rem (1546-1618), with the ownership i … [Click Below for Full Description]

GRIMAUDET (Fran?ois);

Martyrologio Romano.
1586. 4to. (12), 214 ff. With numerous woodcut initials and 12 woodcuts in the text. 18th-c. marbled calf with label to gilt spine. All edges red. Rare first Spanish edition. The "Martyrologium romanum" was newly edited by Cardinal Baronius in 1584 after the calendar reforms of Pope Gregory XIII. The 1586 edition published in Rome is rare, as well, as the author had most copies called back after he had been made aware of mistakes owing to his poor command of Greek. He corrected the work and issued it once more in Antwerp in 1589, in Rome in 1598, and in Paris in 1607" (cf. Wetzer/W. I, 2038). Another edition of the uncorrected first version was printed in Venice in 1587 (cf . ibid. I, 181). This present Spanish translation by the Jesuit Dionysio Vazquez can only be a largely unknown version based on the uncorrected original and is illustrated with 12 little woocuts (one for each month). Extremely rare; only an incomplete copy in OCLC (Newberry Library; last f. supplied in ms.). Collation shows departures from Palau ([13], 278, [2] ff.), but complete without an index. Later editions (published until the 18th century) are probably based on the revised text. - Contemp. ms. ownership note "Juan Igancio de Fuentes" on t. p.; signature of the Spanish composer Joan Pacheco Montion ("maestro de catedral" in 1684; cf. ABEPI I 696, 87) on final leaf. Palau² 156.585. De Backer/Sommervogel VIII, 488. Not in BM-STC Spanish. Not in Adams.
