Dyck, Anthonie van (1599-1641) and Vorsterman, Lucas I (1595-1675)
An old man on the left in profile reaching out towards a younger woman to the right. This impressive work on paper is said o be based on a lost self-portrait by Titian. Rather than a mistress, the young woman might be seen as a personification of Pictura, or Painting. She is clearly oversized in respect to the painter. Titian had used an extra-large woman in a series of paintings of a nude Venus, in each of which the woman is larger than the male musician. This discrepancy in scale might mean that the man is an "artist" creating his "work of art". Music, as a metaphor for the creation of art, has been a common theme in painting in every century since the Renaissance. Instead of music here Titian (or possibly Van Dyck) constructed a composition in which touch becomes the metaphor for "painting." A skull is positioned within a niche under the elbow of the woman. The lower part of the print has been cut out. The text would read: 'Ecco il belveder ó che felice sorte! / Che la fruttifera frutto in ventre porte // Ma ch'ella, ó me vita et morte piano / demone tra l'arte del magno Titiano // Al molto illustre, magnifico et osseruandis.mo sig.re il SIG LUCA VAN UFFEL, in segno d'affectione et inclinatione / amorevole como Patrone et singularis.mo amico suo dedicato il vero ritratto del unico Titiano Ant. van Dyck.' The dedicatee of the print is Lucas van Uffelen (1586-1638) art dealer and patron of van Dyck. Etching and engraving on paper pasted on cardboard; total 261 x 224 mm; traces of glue visible on the surface, some dirt and a tear on the right m … [Click Below for Full Description]

GRITIO Pietro.
In Mantova per Francesco Osanna MDLXXXVI. Mantua 1586 - 4to, pp. [xxviii], 151, [8], [1] colophon; woodcut device on title-page and at end; some clear waterstains in places, and some worming nearly all in the margin; nevertheless a good copy in seventeenth-century calf, spine gilt in compartments, a little worn. First edition, first issue (with the imprint dated 1586), of a treatise set in the form of a dialogue between the author (also known as Pietro Grizi) and Cesare Milanesi. It is more than just a treatise on heraldry: the author was particularly interested in the symbolism of insignia. He has read the works of Cartari, Palazzo and Contile as well as the authors he refers to as having written on 'l'Imprese Zifferate' and those interpreters of symbols such as Valeriano. Among the topics discussed in passing are Prester John and the anachronistic use of La palla di Rachetta, il qual gioco e Inventione molto nuovo in an illustration to Ovid. Among the accompanying material addressed to the editor and dedicatee are a letter from Aldo Manuzio the younger, writing from Bologna (at the very end), and a poem by Tasso (among the preliminary matter). MATTIOLI, Pietro Andrea.
Frankfurt: Feyer, 1586. With nearly 1000 contemporarily hand colored woodcuts. First edition, contemporarily colored, of the first edition of Camerarius's version of Mattioli's great herbal. This edition contains the Gesner/Camerarius suite of woodcuts. Gesner had been preparing material for a massive historia plantarum but died before finishing the task; Camerarius acquired the material, utilized the woodcuts in the present work and supplemented them with his own. They are remarkable in their scientific detail, especially the enlarged depictions of floral structure, seeds, and fruit. This is the first time that such representation was consistently followed, and marks the beginning of what only much later became a convention in scientific botanical illustration, when the taxonomic importance of these details was fully appreciated. They first appeared in Camerarius' recension of Mattioli, De plantis epitome utilissima of the same year (which is a different text to the above, and not merely a Latin version of the same). In addition to the botanical cuts, the German edition contains seven woodcuts of distilling apparatus. In the Vorred, Camerarius describes in detail the edition history of this book, and of the woodblocks in particular. Not all of the Gesner woodblocks were finished, when Camerarius set out to edit Mattioli's text. In supervising the cutting of the already executed designs of the blocks, he took much care in assuring they were botanically correct. In the preface he gives a list of woodcuts already finished, but not botanically correct, and describes how the de … [Click Below for Full Description]

Marche (B08340) di S. Gryphius il giovane sul front. e (B08340) di A. Gryphius in fine. Iniziali e fregi xil. ornati.

BMC NH, p. 493; Nissen, BBI 564; Stafleu & Cowan 1586. Extensively illustrated work on orchids from the East African islands of France, Bourbon and Madagascar, by the French traveller and botanist Du Petit-Thouars (1758-1831), a brother of the well-known marine officer Abel-Aubert Du Petit-Thouars.The plates were published separately between 1804 and 1822, and were issued together with the text (in two parts) as quarto (with coloured plates) and octavo (uncoloured). All these different issues explain the different collations of this work. Our copy has the complete text, though it ends with a catchword. The plates in our copy are continuously numbered, though the numbering of the copy described by Stafleu & Cowan slightly differs.Old owner's inscription cut from right upper corner of the title-page, the text and a few plates foxed and a few minor tears in the margins of the plates. A good copy.

Mendoza, Juan Gonzalez de (1545-1618)
Appresso Andrea Muschio, Venetia (Venice). [30]+462+[40] pages with woodcut printer's device to title and through out at the terminus of sections. Duodecimo (6 1/4" x 4 1/2") bound in original limp vellum. Translated from the Spanish by Francesco Avanzi. (Adams G868; Lust 23: Sabin 2779) First Italian edition. Juan Gonzalez de Mendoza's history was the first systematic study of Chinese society, the first history of contemporary China published in a European language, the first book printed in Europe to contain an illustration of Chinese characters, and the most influential and detailed work on China prepared in the sixteenth century. This history is an editing by Mendoza of the experiences of other priests not only in China, but also in much of the New World and Asia generally. Mendoza used both primary and secondary sources: accounts of Dominican and Franciscan friars, personal conversations with native Chinese residing in Spain and Jesuit letters. In particular, Mendoza added accounts of three missionary voyages from 1577, 1579 and 1581. It covers most aspects of Chinese society in depth - from chronology to government organization, to the Chinese language, to the country's legal system business practices and industry. It also makes important observations on the nature of Chinese writing and its ideographic nature. First published in 1885 in Rome as Historia de las cosas mas notables ritos y costumbres del gran reyno de China. Mendoza's history was a huge popular success for several reasons: the prevailing thirst for knowledge in the vernacular about the Far East the auth … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cat. Kress 423; Enno van Gelder, Gedrukte Muntplakkaten 411; STCN (3 copies). Original-size illustrations of numerous gold, silver and copper coins officially recognised as legal tender by the Dutch government, with their proper weights in Engelsen and Asen (pennywight and grains) and their official values in guilders, stuivers and penningen. In 1586, five years after declaring its independence from Spain, the Dutch Republic proclaimed its first general coinage act. Cornelis Claesz. in Amsterdam published the first Beeldenaer, ofte Figuer-boeck in that year, and a second quarto and a sixteenmo edition plus four variants, all under his name, are usually listed under that year (Typ. Batava 440-446; Enno van Gelder 306-310). After a gap of 20 years Hillebrant Jacobsz. van Wouw, official printer to the Dutch States General, finally published an updated edition (though the province of Holland issued its own in 1604), and he and his heirs were to produce new editions regularly for the following 20 years. With the title-page pasted to the fly-leaf, a tiny wormhole throughout and a small burning hole through three leaves, not affecting the text. Very good copy.
