First collected edition of the works of Galileo, edited by Carlo Manolessi, and appearing only a year after his death. This was the edition in which Newton and his later contemporaries read their Galileo.

The volumes contain not only most of the major works written and published over his lifetime, but also substantial unpublished material, both by Galileo himself as well as by his supporters and critics. Many of these items were provided to the editor by Vincenzo Viviani, Galileo's friend and disciple, including a number of Galileo's hitherto unpublished letters and experiments and La Bilancetta, his first scientific work, written in 1586. The Dialogo was of course on the Index and was not included in editions of the Opere until 1744.

A feature of this edition is that each work has its own separate title page, imprint and pagination, which has resulted in several copies being broken up, the individual tracts being sold individually.

Carlo & Favaro 251; Cinti 132; Riccardi I 518-9.. 2 vols., 4to (228 x 167 mm), contemporary flexible vellum, fully complete I: pp. [28], 48, 48, [8], 160, [4], 68, 127, [4], 264, 43, including allegorical frontispiece signed Stefano della Bella, engraved portrait of Galileo by Villamoena, and with large folding plate of proportional compass; II: pp. [2], 60, [16], 104, [4], 105-156, 48, [8], 179, [1], [2], 53-106, [2], 103-126, [8], 238 (i.e. 242), [6]. Numerous woodcut diagrams in text (collates as in Cinti, Bibliotheca Galileiana). Some scattered browning to various quires (as usual), light damp stain in the beginning of volume 2, but in general a very good and unsophistaced copy

A CHOICE OF EMBLEMES AND OTHER DEVISES, FOR THE MOSTE PARTE GATHERED OUT OF SUNDRIE WRITERS, ENGLISHED AND MORALIZED

Leyden: Christopher Plantyn by Francis Raphelengius, 1586. FIRST PRINTING. The Very Rare 1586 First Edition Of the First Emblem Book Printed in English 222 x 165 mm (8 3/4 x 6 1/2"). 10 p.l., 230 pp. Attractive early 19th century brown straight-grain morocco, the covers and spine compartments edged with triple rules, wide raised bands ornamented with gilt beading, gilt titling on spine, all edges gilt. Plantin compass device on title page and full-page coat of arms (of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester) on verso, foliated initial, woodcut bear in tondo, and 247 FINE EMBLEMATIC WOODCUTS WITHIN TYPOGRAPHIC BORDERS, with accompanying Latin captions, interpretations in English rhyme, and often a Latin verse. With the bookplates of John Landwehr and Fountaine Walker. Moseley, pp. 21-22, 103-09, and illustrations 29-33; Landwehr, "Lowlands" 898; Freeman, pp. 56-61; Praz, p. 535; Lowndes IV, 2908; Brunet V, 1440; Graesse VI, 2, 443. Joints and extremities a bit rubbed, several inoffensive minor abrasions on covers, but the binding still solid and certainly agreeable. Final three leaves lightly soiled and with several small tears and holes carefully repaired (two letters of text touched without loss, two sidenotes and two decorative borders with tiny loss), three other leaves with neatly mended marginal tears (not reaching the text), perhaps a dozen leaves with minor spots or stains worth mentioning, otherwise a surprisingly well-preserved copy internally of a very rare book that, whenever it is found, virtually always appears in wretched condition. This is the really excellent Landwehr copy of the very rare original edition of the first emblem book printed in English, with nearly 250 woodcut emblems. Whitney's collection of emblems is of great interest, as it first introduced English readers to a wealth of material gathered from earlier French and Italian emblem books published by Plantin, such as those of Alciati, Sambucus, Adrianus Junius, and Paradin. Just over 80 percent of the woodcuts were printed from blocks identical with the continental works, which, as Rosemary Freeman notes, "is in some senses its virtue" because Whitney's anthology served in turn as inspiration to later English emblem books. Freeman says that "though none, with the exception of [Henry] Peacham, can compare with Whitney in scale, all clearly showed themselves indebted to his work and all follow the lines which he laid down." Whitney was particularly fond of tales from Greek and Roman history and mythology, and of animal fables, but he also chose to interpret a number of heraldic devices, usually taken from Paradin, such as the shirt displayed to Saladin's troops, or the lion and sword emblem on the ring of Pompey the Great. But however much he borrowed, our author went beyond simply translating the continental interpretations, and whenever possible drew a moral from the emblem in his poems. Moseley indicates that the book is a lot more than just an assemblage of emblems, suggesting that the work is, in fact, making a clear political statement. He writes that the book "is a serious and systematic discussion of the political and moral issues raised by England's campaign in the Netherlands . . . and has a consistent thematic insistence on Justice, Judgement, and the prudence of England's intervention in her neighbour's war." According to DNB, it was from Whitney's book "that Shakespeare gained the knowledge which he evidently possessed of the great foreign emblematists of the 16th century. Whitney's verses are often of great merit, and always manifest a pure mind and extensive learning." Geffrey (or Geoffrey) Whitney (ca. 1548-1601) was educated at Oxford and Cambridge, and served as under-bailiff of Great Yarmouth. He studied at the University of Leyden in 1586, at a time when English troops under the Earl of Leicester were supporting the Dutch war for independence from Spain. Whitney's presence in the Lowlands enabled him to publish his emblem book with the Plantin press, and he dedicated it to Leicester, then a favorite of Queen Elizabeth.

HISTORIA DE LAS COSAS MAS NOTABLES, RITOS Y COSTUMBRES, DEL GRAN REYNO DELA CHINA...CON UN ITINERARIO DEL NUEUO MUNDO

Madrid: En casa de Pedro Madrigal, 1586 [but dated 1587 on the colophon page].. Two parts bound in one volume. [12],116; 244,[12] leaves, including one full-page plate. Small octavo. Contemporary calf, rebacked with original gilt backstrip laid down, gilt red morocco label. Binding edgeworn and rubbed, foredge of front board gnawed. Trimmed close, affecting the first work of the title and the running headline in the preliminary material. Ex- lib., with a small ink stamp on the verso of the titlepage and on the colophon page. Faint old stain in upper margin of second part, else quite clean internally. About very good. In a half morocco box. An early edition of Gonzalez de Mendoza, following the first of 1585, and the second and best edition to contain the Espejo narrative of early exploration in the American Southwest. Antonio de Espejo began his exploration of New Mexico in 1583, in the company of Fray Beltran and fourteen soldiers. The ostensible reason for his expedition was to find Fr. Agustin Rodriguez, who had disappeared in that region the previous year, but much more was accomplished than merely establishing the sad fate of the martyred Franciscan. A true wealth of new information about the traversed territory was garnered, and this is the first publication to include notice of that expedition (found in this edition beginning on leaf 165 of the second part). Most editions of this work do not contain the information about Espejo's New Mexican adventure, and Wagner says that the present edition is only the second with the Espejo narrative, following a Madrid edition of 1586, printed by Querino Gerardo Flamenco. Wagner also notes that many of the errors of that previous edition have been corrected in the present edition, and Palau writes that this edition is considered to be the most complete. Topics of special interest are natural history, Indian landholding practices, and Spanish cultural developments. Ortelius states in his atlas that he obtained more information about America from this work than from any other single source. In addition to the volume's great Americana content, it offers rich data on China, Japan, the Maluccas (the Spice Islands), and the Philippines. The author (1545-1614) was an Augustinian, but he includes much about the activities of Jesuits and Franciscans, seemingly - and this is notable - in an impartial and unprejudiced manner. Copies of the Spanish language editions of this work that contain the account of the Espejo expedition have become very rare in commerce. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 587/21. JCB (3)I:307-308. PALAU 105499. In quello stesso anno apparvero numerose edizioni della traduzione italiana (Roma, Venezia, Genova) a riprova dell'enorme successo e circolazione dell' "Historia".
