LACKING title page and text leaves - I8 (pp. 143-144), L6 (pp. 170-171) and O6 (pp. 217-218) all of which are supplied in manuscript written on laid paper in an early hand (18th-19th century). Bound in full 19th century calf and carefully re-backed preserving the old spine. Binding shows rubbing, wear, and areas of darkening or staining. The bottom corner of the front cover is carefully restored. Interior pages show occasional spots of light spotting, soiling, staining and smudging. Jean Bodin (1530-1596) was a French jurist and political thinker. His influential witch hunting and demonology manual ?"La Demonomanie des sorciers?" (first published in 1580) was based in part on his own experience as a judge in several witchcraft trials. Numerous cases are analyzed. The author offers lurid details concerning witches?' Sabbaths, devil worship and supernatural murder. Cases of Lycanthropy and demonic possession are also discussed. The third section of Bodin?'s treatise is devoted to interrogation techniques and to court procedure in cases of witchcraft. The author recommends the use of torture, even when children and invalids are concerned. He also warns that people who deny the existence of witchcraft are often witches themselves.

Floriated and historiated woodcut initials, grotesque tailpieces, headpiece containing a device of a plant being watered with motto "A poco a poco", all three titles with a different engraved architectural border, each containing Ziletti’s star device at head, 108 fine engravings of Imprese by Girolamo Porro. First title fractionally dusty, the odd thumb mark. A very good copy, clean and crisp, the engravings in excellent strong impression, in C17 Italian speckled calf, spine, with raised bands, gilt in compartments with gilt fleurons at centres, tan morocco title label gilt, covers a little worn, joints cracked at head. a.e.r. First edition of this fine book of imprese, richly illustrated with a long series of engravings of emblems or devices by Girolamo Porro, and Latin (or in a few cases Greek) mottos, all within different ornamental borders, each associated with a contemporary notable and accompanied by Camillo’s text of iconographic explanation, and verses. The work is dedicated to Ferdinando de Medici in which Camilli pays tribute to the engraver Porro "Nella qual opera, se io per insufficienza hauesi manca in qualche cosa, ho alemeno supplito nella nobilta, & bellezza delle Figure, lequali sono state per la maggior parte intagliate da M. Girolamo Porro". Many are the imprese of important Italian families such as the Gonazaga or Borghesi. Interestingly this work contains the imprese of Sir Henry Lee (part 2 pages 12-14), Master of the Ordnance under Queen Elizabeth I. Lee became Queen Elizabeth I’s champion in 1570 and was appointed Master of the Royal Armouries in 1580, an office which he held until his death. As Queen’s Champion, Lee devised the Accession Day tilts, held annually on 17 November, the most important Elizabethan court festival from the 1580s. He seems to have been well known to Camilli, and Camilli’s work was influential at the Elizabethan court, providing Elizabethans with devices for their pageants and tournaments. Books of imprese quickly became a favored genre of the Renaissance. They are, as here, crammed with news, from classical historiography to contemporary events, including animalistic, astrological and poetic curiosities, and the relation of customs. The imprese's proximity to emblems, with the love of encoded expression helped to explain their success. A typical example in this work is the impresa of Nicolaus Bernardinus Sanseverinus, Prince of Bisignano, whose device shows the optical illusion of a stick placed in water with the motto "Fallit imago". This device was taken up by the Elizabethan author Chapman and used on the title page of his work ‘Ovids Banquet of Sence’ published in 1595 with the motto changed to ‘Sibi conscia recti’.       Antverpiae (Anvers): Antverpiae Ambivaritor, 1586. Fine. Antverpiae Ambivaritor, Antverpiae (Anvers) 1586 -1587, in-4 (17x22cm), relié. - Very rare collection of engravings of first edition of two complete sets of gods and nymphs represented marine Length and edited by Philip Galle in Antwerp. The set consists of 34 plates, 167 mm by 217 mm, and numbered etched on copper and two headpieces title. The first set of male deities entitled Semideorum marinorum amnicorumque sigillariae imagine perelegantes in picturae statuariaeque artis tyronum usum, was conducted in 1586, while the second series, Nimpharum oceanitidum ephydridum potamidum naiadum lynadumque icons in gratiam picturae studiosae ivventutis deliniatae scalptae and editae has philip. Gallaeo, dedicated to female deities, published the following year, in 1587. Note that a collection entitled Nimpharum icons had previously appeared in 1583, but did not contain the 17 engravings. The last plank Nimpharum bear the signatures of Hiero Wierix and Ioann. Collaert. Binding contemporary in full vellum by little flaps, smooth spine tooled, head, title to the pen. Also handwritten annotations of the contemporary on the back of certain plates making explicit the identity of the figures. Some very tiny worm works at meals and contreplats without gravity. Born in 1537 in Haarlem, Philip Galle, from a dynasty of engravers, is one of the largest publishers of burinistes and Flemish and Dutch schools in the second half of the sixteenth century. Student from 1556 the humanist scholar Dirck Volkertsz Coornhert in Haarlem, he succeeded him as an engraver works by Maarten van Heemskerck (1498-1574). The following year, he joined Antwerp publishing house of the artist, merchant and printer prints Hieronymus Cock (1518-1570), he ends up, again, for to succeed in establishing itself as the one of the main writers of his contemporary Pieter Brueghel the Elder (1525-1569). In the center of the production of engravings Antwerp, Philip Galle counted among his students Hendrick Goltzius (1558-1617) and Crispin Password the Elder (1564-1637). This valuable collection of allegories, presenting the main gods of the oceans, seas, rivers and streams, appears, from a stylistic point of view, as a remarkable syncretism Nordic naturalism and Italian Mannerism. The trip began between 1560 and 1561 across Germany, France and Italy, was probably one of the sources of these eclectic influences. The michelangelesques accents of female musculature, as well as lengthening silhouettes worthy of a Madonna Parmesan, reflect the contributions of the Italian High Renaissance and the beginnings of mannerism. In the legacy of a Schongauer or Dürer, expressive faces and skin tones, to verismo effects, attests for its more Germanic aesthetics. This acuity and concern for the realistic rendering of bodies and expressions to link the activity of portraitist Philippe Galle, who engraved from life many of his humanist contemporaries, including Vesalius, Erasmus, Thomas More and Guillaume Bude . He became famous as well as one of the first authors of books of learned men of the sixteenth century portraits. Through these two series of engravings, composed characters in turn inherited from ancient mythologies as well as stream personifications of different European geographical areas, Galle manages to make subtle play of physiognomy. Mediterranean shores of the Nile (Nilus) to those of the Thames (Tamesis) north, the artist makes significant diversity of the figures, which each seem to oscillate between classical idealization and realistic individualization. The iconography to topographic or mythological character, each character refers to its myth or its geographical area; Obelisk, pyramid and crocodile accompanying the Nile, Neptune (Neptunus) brandishing his trident, Charon's boat floating on the river Styx, Nereus (Nereus) surrounded by her daughters, the Nereids, Hydra and Hydra, Glaucus (Glaucus) contemplating Scylla or Acis still reaching the sea in front of Galatea ... This collection of Philip Galle has to be seen in the development of staged allegorical in the art of the sixteenth century, mainly due to the rise of emblem books, of Hieroglyphica of Horapollo published by Aldus in 1505, to 'Iconologia Cesare Ripa 1593. There is a copy of the two books that make up our work in the library of Cambridge, but descriptive details; Nimpharum the icons is also indexed in Netherlandish books published by Andrew Pettegree, Malcolm Walsby. We also expect a copy in the library of Passau, one at the National Library of France, one in the National Library of Spain and the University Library of Erfurt. The University of Liège has made this collection only state of 12 engravings. The other copies that we identified have only male series, they are kept at the Library of Dilbeek Cultura Fund, the British Library and the Bodleian Library at Oxford. The Metropolitan Museum of New York, the British Museum and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, including retain some planks extracted from two series. Des rives méditerranéennes du Nil (Nilus) à celles de la Tamise (Tamesis) septentrionale, l'artiste rend sensible la diversité des figures, où chacune sembler osciller entre idéalisation classique et individualisation réaliste. Ce recueil de Philippe Galle est à replacer dans le développement des mises en scène allégoriques dans l'art du XVIe siècle, notamment dû à l'essor des livres d'emblèmes, des Hieroglyphica d'Horapollon, publié par Alde en 1505, à l'Iconologia de Cesare Ripa de 1593. On trouve un exemplaire des deux recueils qui composent notre ouvrage à la bibliothèque de Cambridge, mais sans détails descriptifs; le Nimpharum icones est également indexé dans Netherlandish books publié par Andrew Pettegree, Malcolm Walsby. Nous comptons également un exemplaire à la bibliothèque de Passau, un à la Bibliothèque Nationale de France, un à la Bibliothèque Nationale d'Espagne et un à la bibliothèque universitaire d'Erfurt. L'université de Liège qui possède ce recueil fait seulement état de 12 gravures. Les autres exemplaires que nous avons pu identifier comptent uniquement la série masculine, ils sont conservés à la Cultura Fonds Library de Dilbeek, à la British Library de Londres, ainsi que qu'à la Bodleian Library d'Oxford. Le Metropolitan museum de New York, le British Museum de Londres, et le Rijksmuseum d'Amsterdam, conservent notamment quelques planches extraites des deux séries. Second edition of this important and early genealogy, bound with the first edition of the second work "Les Droicts, Autoritez et perogatives que pretendent au Royaume de Hierusalem.". Estienne de Lusignan, was born at Nicosia, capital of Cyprus, and chose an ecclesiastical career under the guidance of the Armenian Bishop, Julian. After the fall of Cyprus he escaped to Italy and spent his fortune on buying his enslaved parents back from Turkey. He moved to Paris in 1577 and was nominated as Bishop of Limasso in Cyprus. "The work of Veccerius became an important source for the Généalogies of Estienne de Chypre de Lusignan (1537 - 1590). As his name suggests, Estienne was a descendant of the Lusignan kings of Cyprus and Bishop of Limassol. He wrote his Genealogies for Francois de Luxembourg-Piney, in which he presented the genealogies of sixty-seven noble dynasties that can all be traced back to the Merovingians. . In this book, Melusine and the search for her true historic identity are a recurrent theme. This may be unsurprising, since it is that very figure that enabled the author’s own glorious dynastic roots to be connected with those of his patron, or, as he wrote, ‘The house of Luxembourg, according to our opinion and that of many others, derived from the House of Lusignan’. He also sees Melusine on the crest worn by "all members" of the house of Luxembourg and Lusignan as clear proof of his hypothesis." Hand lettered booklabel “Alec B. Sanford” on front pastedown The text concerns the proposed execution of Mary, Queen of Scots. The authorship has often been wrongly attributed to Richard Crompton. Robert Cecil was the son of William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley and Mildred Cooke. His half-brother was Thomas Cecil, 1st Earl of Exeter and philosopher Francis Bacon was his first cousin. After his education at St John's College, Cambridge, Salisbury was made Secretary of State following the death of Sir Francis Walsingham in 1590, and he became the leading minister after the death of his father in 1598, serving both Queen Elizabeth and King James as Secretary of State. He fell into dispute with Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, and only prevailed upon the latter's poor campaign against the Irish rebels during the Nine Years War in 1599. He was then in a position to orchestrate the smooth succession of King James, maintaining a 'secret correspondence. For most of his working life he served as spymaster for King James. King James raised him to the peerage on 20 August 1603 as Baron Cecil, of Essendon in the County of Rutland, before creating him Viscount Cranborne in 1604 and then Earl of Salisbury in 1605. Lord Salisbury was extensively involved in matters of state security. The son of Lord Burghley (Queen Elizabeth's principal minister) and a protégé of Sir Francis Walsingham (Elizabeth's principal spymaster), he was trained by them in matters of spycraft as a matter of course. In 1603 his brother-in-law Lord Cobham was implicated in both the Bye Plot and also the Main Plot, which were an attempt to remove James from the throne and replace him with Lady Arbella Stuart. Salisbury served as both the third chancellor of Trinity College, Dublin and chancellor of the University of Cambridge between 1601 and 1612. In addition, the Cecil family fostered arts: they supported musicians such as William Byrd, Orlando Gibbons and Thomas Robinson. In 1589 Cecil married Elizabeth Brooke, the daughter of William Brooke, 10th Baron Cobham, and his second wife, Frances Newton. Their son, William Cecil was born in Westminster on 28 March 1591 and baptized in St Clement Danes on 11 April. Elizabeth died when their son was six years old. He succeeded his father as Earl of Salisbury [STC 6052].

(etwas berieben und bestoßen, kleine Lederverluste an den Kanten des hinteren Deckels, Schließen entfernt, Wurmlöcher auf vorderem Deckel, Vorsätze auf Spiegeln erneuert, im Ganzen ordentlich erhalten, detaillierte Beschreibung weiter unten). Das Papier ist etwas gebräunt, der Druck ist stellenweise etwas flau. 16 Seiten sind falsch paginiert, das Buch ist aber vollständig. Auf der Titelei sind zwei Besitzvermerke von alter Hand, die untere Ecke des Buchblocks ist leicht beschnitten, zahlreiche entfernte Eselsohren, an vielen Stellen dezente Feuchtigkeitsränder, auf den Seiten 193 bis 216 stärker, vereinzelt finden sich Radierspuren, Blatt 7/8 ist gelockert, 227/28 mit Fleck und Loch im weißen Rand, 461 stärker fleckig, die letzten Blätter mit Wurmspur im weißen Rand, nur das letzte Blatt mit kleinem Buchstabenverlust, das letzte Blatt mit hinterlegtem Loch von 1,5 cm Durchmesser und kleinem Textverlust. - Cicero (107 - 44 v. Chr.) war in politischer und philosophischer Hinsicht eine der bemerkenswertesten Persönlichkeiten der römischen Antike. Seine Prosa in Reden und Briefen war meisterhaft und galt den Humanisten nach der Wiederentdeckung der Schriftrollen durch Petrarca und Salutati im 14. Jahrhundert als absolutes Vorbild für den lateinischen Stil (vgl. Greenblatt: Die Wende. Wie die Renaissance entstand.). Il testo è preceduto da tre Sonetti di Agamennone Cavallo, Antonio Beffa Negrini e Luigi Grotto Cieco. Testo in doppia bordura. Capilettera ornati. Minimi aloni. Assai scarse le notizie biografiche sul Tomai. Nativo di Ravenna, insieme ai fratelli Lorenzo e Gioacchino, sulle orme del padre Camillo, medico, studiò filosofia e medicina, distinguendosi nel 1555 in occasione della epidemia di peste a Venezia. Ascritto alla Accademia degli Innominati di Parma, scrisse una stimata storia della sua città natale (pubblicata nel 1574 a Pesaro per i tipi del Giglio), fu magistrato, ma si dedicò soprattutto alla medicina, alla meteorologia e all'alchimia. Passò a miglior vita nel 1593. La presente Opera ebbe larghissima diffusione fino al XVIII secolo, e costituisce una "summa" di nozioni di alchimia, medicina, scienze naturali, meteorologia, astrologia, esoterismo, fisiognomica, demonologia, qualità di pietre preziose e metalli, stregoneria, uso delle erbe, terremoti, facendo ampio uso di citazioni di moltissimi autori, quali Alberto Magno, Apollonio di Tiana, Appiano, Ariosto, Aristotele, Asclepio, Averroe, Avicenna, Cecco d'Ascoli, Democrito, Dioscoride, Empedocle, Galeno, Girolamo Cardano, Fracastoro, Ippocrate, Mosé, Omero, Ovidio, Paolo Diacono, Platone, Pontano, Raimondo Lullo, Salomone, Seneca, Strabone, Teofrasto, Tolomeo, Virgilio, Vitruvio, Senofonte, etc. Svariati capitoli sono dedicati a temi medici. Armi della città  di Rouen sul titolo, armi di Carlo di Borbone al verso del frontespizio. Minime fioriture, ma ottima copia.PRIMA EDIZIONE della prima opera sulla storia, le antichità  e i monumenti della città  normanna di Rouen, che ai quei tempi era la seconda città  della Francia dopo Parigi e la più grande diocesi del regno con 1338 parrocchiani. Nella dedica al cardinale Charles de Bourbon, allora vescovo di Rouen, l'autore avverte di aver organizzato l'opera sul modello di quella di Gilles Corrozet sulle antichità  di Parigi. Dopo alcuni componimenti preliminari in lode dell'autore e della città , il volume si apre con la narrazione della fondazione della città  (avvenuta nell'anno 80 dell'era cristiana) e dei suoi primi anni di storia. Quindi continua con capitoli dedicati alle piazze, alle fontane, ai ponti, alle porte, alle macellerie e pescherie, alle chiese (con i loro arredi, organi e reliquie), ai monasteri, alle cappelle e alle confraternite della città . Elenca persino le strade dei vari quartieri, specificando per ciascuna le case e i palazzi principali. Fornisce quindi brevi notizie biografiche sui vescovi e sui duchi di Normandia e descrive le cerimonie compiute durante la tradizionale festa della Concezione della Vergine (sono riportate anche alcune poesie recitate nella circostanza, ossia un chant royal, una ballade e un rondeau, di H. James e Le Vasseur di Dieppe). L'opera si chiude con i fatti della città  fino al 1586, anno in cui era vescovo di Rouen Charles de Bourbon (1523-1590), il quale, essendo allora il più vecchio membro della casa di Bourbon ed essendo cattolico, poteva reclamare la corona di Francia. Nonostante l'appoggio del duca di Guisa e del re di Spagna, il cardinale Bourbon fu tuttavia imprigionato e prima di morire fu costretto a riconoscere la legittimità  dell'elezione al trono del nipote Enrico di Navarra. Alle pagine 212-213 vi è un interessante passaggio riguardante l'introduzione della stampa in Francia, che così recita: «Du temps de ce mesme Archevesque fut inventé par un Allemand l'art d'Imprimer en la cite de Majence, et apporté en France par un ieune homme de Rouën surnommé Morin, lequel fit les premiers caracteres pour Imprimer, et de fait imprima plusieurs livres en ceste ville de Rouen: où depuis ce temps l'Imprimerie a tellement fleuri iusques à  ce iour par la bonne diligence des Libraires et Imprimeurs qui y sont en bon nombre, que nulle autre Imprimerie ne surpasse auiourd'huy celle de Rouen en beauté de caracteres: de sorte que mesme ceux de Paris y envoyent le plus souvent leurs livres pour les faire Imprimer, comme lon fait de present». Noël Taillepied entrò nell'ordine francescano in giovane età , per poi passare successivamente in quello dei Capuccini. Originario di Pontoise, studiò dapprima nel convento dei Cordelieri della sua città , quindi teologia a Parigi. Insegnò per diversi anni a Pontoise e ad Angers, dove morì nel 1589. Tra i suoi scritti ricordiamo un'opera polemica contenente le vite di Martin Luther, Andreas Bodenstein e Pietro Martire, una storia dei Druidi, un compendio in francese della filosofia aristotelica, un trattato sugli spiriti e le apparizioni, un'opera sulle antichità  di Pontoise e numerosi dissertazioni teologiche. Quest'opera fu stampata nello stesso anno da diversi tipografi di Rouen, tra cui Richard Petit. Difficile stabilire una priorità  fra le edizioni, le quali differiscono solamente per alcune iniziali e fregi tipografici. P. Aquilon - A.R. (etwas berieben und bestoßen, kleine Lederverluste an den Kanten des hinteren Deckels, Schließen entfernt, Wurmlöcher auf vorderem Deckel, Vorsätze auf Spiegeln erneuert, im Ganzen ordentlich erhalten, detaillierte Beschreibung weiter unten) Das Papier ist etwas gebräunt, der Druck ist stellenweise etwas flau. 16 Seiten sind falsch paginiert, das Buch ist aber vollständig. Auf der Titelei sind zwei Besitzvermerke von alter Hand, die untere Ecke des Buchblocks ist leicht beschnitten, zahlreiche entfernte Eselsohren, an vielen Stellen dezente Feuchtigkeitsränder, auf den Seiten 193 bis 216 stärker, vereinzelt finden sich Radierspuren, Blatt 7/8 ist gelockert, 227/28 mit Fleck und Loch im weißen Rand, 461 stärker fleckig, die letzten Blätter mit Wurmspur im weißen Rand, nur das letzte Blatt mit kleinem Buchstabenverlust, das letzte Blatt mit hinterlegtem Loch von 1,5 cm Durchmesser und kleinem Textverlust. - Cicero (107 - 44 v. Chr.) war in politischer und philosophischer Hinsicht eine der bemerkenswertesten Persönlichkeiten der römischen Antike. Seine Prosa in Reden und Briefen war meisterhaft und galt den Humanisten nach der Wiederentdeckung der Schriftrollen durch Petrarca und Salutati im 14. Jahrhundert als absolutes Vorbild für den lateinischen Stil (vgl. Greenblatt: Die Wende. Wie die Renaissance entstand.). Neben den Briefen an seinen Bruder Quintus, den Briefen an Brutus und an Atticus bilden die Briefe an Familienmitglieder und an Freunde (epistulae ad familiares) eine eigene Kategorie. Nach der Erfindung des Buchdrucks wurden die Schriften Ciceros häufig verlegt, die Ausgabe mit den Anmerkungen des Reformators Melanchthon ist allerdings recht selten in den Bibliotheken des deutschen Sprachraums zu finden, auch in der Staatsbibliothek Berlin findet sich kein Exemplar. Eine erste Ausgabe dieses Werks erschien bei Froschauer schon 1575. Das Titelblatt mit der humorvollen Druckermarke Froschauers: Frösche, die einen Baum (der Weisheit?) erklettern. Auf die Briefe folgen 102 nicht paginierte Seiten mit den Anmerkungen Melanchthons, darauf 5 Seiten die lateinische Erklärung griechischer Wörter, darauf 11 Seiten "Nomenclatura" - ein Register der Adressaten Ciceros - und darauf noch auf 6 Seiten der Brief "Ciceronis ad Octavium". Octavian war einer der Triumvirn, die Cicero ermorden ließen. Christoph Hegendorph (Schriftsteller, Evangelischer Theologe und Jurist, 1500 - 1540) und Gisbert (Gybertus) Longolius (ein niederrheinischer Humanist 1507 - 1543) haben zur Gestalt des Textes und den Anhängen beigetragen. - VD 16: C 3057. Vico Equense: Giuseppe Cacchi, 1586. |~||~||~||~||~| First Edition, an eccentric sixteenth-century illustrated book, representing one of the earliest works on physiognomy, preceding by some two hundred years Lavater's attempts at estimating human character by features of the face. Porta's treatise on human physiognomy was written to "scientifically" establish the correspondence between external form of the body and the internal character of a person, specifically mental and moral attributes. Physiognomy (literally 'knowledge of nature') is the art of reading a person's character, disposition, even his future, from signs in his face. Porta here rationalizes the art, which was in fact practiced in ancient Greece, by comparing the likeness of various human features to those of animals. Among the animals depicted herein are the owl, ostrich, lion, crow, bull, ox, hog, monkey, donkey, cat, greyhound, eagle, horse, ram, rooster, and others -- all with their "human counterparts." This justly famous work was frequently reprinted: Thorndike (History of Magic and Experimental Science V, 68) estimates that twenty-one editions of Porta's De Humana physiognomia had already appeared by 1655. This first edition is now scarce in private ownership, and much sought-after owing to the high quality of the copperplates. "The designer and cutter of the illustrations is unknown. However, the distortion of features that is practiced in these hybrid monstrosities anticipates the caricaturist's process of blending real and exaggerated characteristics, suggesting that early scientific illustrators are among the forebears of caricaturists" (Brown University, Caricature and its Role in Graphic Satire, 1971, no. 12). Giovanni Battista della Porta (1535-1615) was one of the most interesting natural philosophers in Naples during the late Renaissance. From 1547 to 1552 the Neapolitan academies were closed by the Inquisition under suspicion of political intrigue; it is believed that during this time Porta was largely self-taught. Porta then established the Accademia dei Segreti (Academia Secretorum Naturae) which met at his own house in Naples, and was devoted to the discussion and study of the secrets of nature. Porta's Academy was eventually closed by the Inquisition, which also banned his writings. The range of Porta's scientific and literary interests is demonstrated by his works, which include treatises on "natural magic," cryptography, the art of memory and mnemonic devices, the physiognomy of the hands (based on his observations in the prisons of Naples, often cited as a precursor of criminal physiognomy), the physiognomy of plants, and optics. According to Ruth Mortimer, the texts of both the Hofer and Hollis copies are illustrated with 81 engravings by repetition of 54 copperplates, however, this was clearly an error, as there are 54 repeated images not 54 separate copperplates. There are in fact 27 different copperplates repeating to make a total of 81 in-text illustrations (as properly described in the copy at the British Library). In this copy, like the Hofer copy, the engravings of the hog and the bull, with their "human counterparts," were transposed on R3v and R4r (the bull should be on R3v). Likewise, Bb2r has a pasted overslip of the ichneumon and eyeball. Although the various impressions of this first edition have yet to be prioritized, these factors suggest that the present copy would belong to the earliest state. Leaf L1 with an early repair of a tear, lower margin supplied on leaves S2 and S3, some text affected. Binding with some staining, corner renewed on lower front cover, overall a very good copy.       New edition, the first edition having been published in Lisbon in 1556 and reprinted many times. Date colophon. 1585 Title page in red and black. Brand of printer in the title page. Printing on both columns. Many inscriptions written in pen in the margins and on the back of the title page. Edition adorned headbands, initials and tail-lamp. Full period parchment. Smooth back with title pen and remains a small pen drawing on the back. Traces of laces. Good copy. Cient Pagnino was certainly one of the greatest biblical scholars and philologists of his time; Florentine, he followed the teachings of Savonarola and received the protection of the Medici for his erudition and his oratorical talents. His biblical commentaries even earned him the admiration of the rabbis, for his commitment to the letter of the Hebrew. Jeronimo da Azambuja is responsible for this edition, he glazed her notes and comments. He was himself, although not belonging to the same generation as Pagnino (died in 1541) as a famous commentator of the Bible, including its interest in Hebrew.       New edition after the original from 1562. Rare. Brunet II, 789. Edition italics illustrated twenty figures in and out of curious objects including text combining letters. A copy in the library of Manchester, we have found nothing in France and Germany. Vellum full time, smooth back and as long manuscript pen. A tear on the back (1 cm). Pages restored custody, title page has been reinforced by two small pieces of paper on the back. Lodovico Dolce (1508-1568), man of letters and Venetian humanist, busied editions of classic Italian texts (Dante, Petrarch ...) in collaboration with Ferrari publisher and renewed the genre that bears his mark. He translated the metamorphoses Italian and wrote several dialogues on which a painting featuring Vasari and Aretino, and another on the color properties. He wrote such plays.       1586 - Disbound and placed in 18th-century dark brown sprinkled wrappers. Sprinkled edges. Somewhat closely cut and with a dampstain which is more visible towards the end. Title very soiled, parts of last sheet browned. Last four leaves with small wormhole in the text and last page with closed tear and some wear to the text in the lower right corner. Bookplate. After an anonymous original, "Epistolae quaedam piissimae et eruditissimae Iohannis Hus", originally printed in Wittenberg in 1537, in which the actual biography is mainly based on Peter von Mladenowitz account of Hus' last days. On leaves 39-45 are reprinted the four letters written by Hus during his time in prison, which had been translated on Luther's behalf. The latter has also written the foreword. Werkes mit kleinem Eckabriss, insgesamt ein bedeutendes Zeitdokument in guter Erhaltung. Erschienen auf dem Höhepunkt der zweiten großen Welle der Hexenverfolgungen 1570/90 beinhaltet der Sammelband die wichtigsten Schriften der damaligen Zeit und gewährt einen Einblick in den Stand der intellektuellen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema. Neben Bodins "De magorum Daemonomania" (erstmals 1581 in Oktav auf deutsch erschienen), einem Werk welches "hinsichtlich Tatbestand und Strafprozeß ganz auf dem Boden des Malleus maleficarum (steht)" (Hexen im Südwesten, 1994) enthält der Band Weyers "De praestigiis daemonum" (letzte zu Lebzeiten Weyers erschienene Ausgabe), einem rühmlichen Versuch den Hexenglauben zu entmythologisieren um der damaligen Verfolgungshysterie entgegenzutreten. Schließlich Saurs Kompendium verschiedener Schriften des 16. Jahrhunderts mit meist mäßigenden und kritischen Stimmen (u. a.
