Ruled in red. 2 p.l., 330, [4] pp. 8vo, bound in a superb inlaid mosaic "à répétition" morocco binding with a navy blue base & a large gilt decor of red, citron, & pale brown morocco onlays of stars & quatrefoils, spine similarly decorated, pink silk endpapers, attributable to Nicolas-Denis Derôme (full description below), a.e.g. Rome: "in Collegio Societatis Jesu," 1586. The extremely rare first publication by the Jesuits written to establish a plan of studies meant for layman as well as priests, which included for the first time the humanities -- literature, history, drama, etc. -- as well as the traditional clerical fields of philosophy and theology. This dramatic change made clear that the literary and humanistic program of the Renaissance was compatible with the Scholastic program of the Middle Ages. The Ratio Studiorum, an exposition of principles, standardized on a global basis the highly influential system of Jesuit education which continued for centuries. Their commitment to education had great ramifications for both the Jesuit Order as well as the entire Catholic Church. The present copy, printed only in 100 or 120 copies, is bound in a magnificent mosaic binding attributable to Nicolas-Denis Derôme and comes from the library of Paul Girardot de Préfond, with his characteristic morocco bookplate. Our copy also contains annotations by the German Jesuit priest Jakob Rem (1546-1618), with the ownership inscription on title (quite faded because the title was lightly washed at the time of binding) "Colleg. Ing. Soc. Jesu. Ad usum P. I. Rhami" ("Ingolstadt Secondary School. For the use of P. J. Rem."). All copies of this edition were ordered to be burned in 1599, hence its great rarity. "During the generalate of Claudio Acquaviva (1581-1614), the educational methods of the Society were finally formulated. In 1584 six experienced schoolmen [the Spanish Juan Azor, the Portuguese Gaspar Gonçalves, the Scottish James Tyrie, the Dutch Peter Buys, Antoyne Goyson, born in the Spanish Netherlands, and the Italian Stefano Tucci], selected from different nationalities and provinces, were called to Rome, where for a year they studied pedagogical works, examined regulations of colleges and universities, and weighed the observations and suggestions made by prominent Jesuit educators."-Catholic Encyclopedia. In 1586, they issued the present work, a trial document, which was printed for private review in a very limited number and sent out to all twenty-one Jesuit provinces. After accumulating responses from the five most eminent Jesuits from each province, a revised Ratio Studiorum was issued in 1591, which again received reviews from the Jesuits educators from around the world. Finally, in 1599, the final and definitive Ratio Studiorum was issued. This is extremely rare book. Only a limited number of copies were originally printed -- between 100 and 120 -- for the Order's internal use. When the definitive version of the Ratio Studiorum was printed in 1599, a letter dated March 29, 1599 written by Superior General Claudio Acquaviva ordered that all previous editions be gathered and burned. This rarity was so well-known in the 18th century that Guillaume François De Bure at first thought that there was only one copy, as he states in his Avertissement in the sale catalogue of Girardot de Préfond's first collection (1757): "the obliteration was so scrupulous that only a single copy exists which we have carefully preserved at the library of the Dominicans of Toulouse" (p. xiv of the Avertissement). In his famous Bibliographie instructive, he dedicates a very long comment to this banned book (1764, item 1008, pp. 65-71). De Bure ended up locating seven more copies. Bound-in at the end is a one-page handwritten questionnaire, which accompanied copies of the Ratio Studiorum when sent out to Jesuit provinces. The Ratio Studiorum was very much a work in progress, making the presence of annotations natural in this copy. The German Jesuit Jakob Rem was Prefect of studies at the Dillingen and Munich schools before being appointed under-regent to the school in Ingolstadt where he lived from 1586 till his death. He was one of the great figures of the Order of the Jesuits in the early 17th century and knew General Claudio Acquaviva very well. He was, no doubt, one of the original recipients of a copy in 1586. Rem and the General had been friends since they were novitiates in Rome. BINDING: Paul Girardot de Préfond, one of the great bibliophiles of the 18th century, came from a family of timber merchants. He very much appreciated fine bindings and, following the sale of his first collection in 1757, was able to afford a second, even better collection, for which he often resorted to the best binders of the day such as Padeloup or Derôme. However, coming under pressure from his creditors in 1769, he was forced to sell his entire second collection to Count Justin Mac Carthy-Reagh. This copy was not present in the sale catalogue of the first library of de Préfond. It might be the copy described in the sale catalogue of Mac Carthy-Reagh (1815) which describes a copy (lot 1208): "mar. citron à compartimens [=mosaic], tabis, l.r. [lavé, réglé]." While the base leather of our copy is navy blue, citron morocco forms the predominant color of the onlays. It is therefore difficult to establish to which collection assembled by Girardot de Préfond this copy of Ratio Studiorum belongs. "Mosaic bindings, with their variety of colors and extravagance of design, seem to have been reserved for special religious books of octavo or smaller form, for rare and controversial works, and for volumes connected with special occasions. Few are signed."-Barber, Waddesdon Printed Books and Bookbindings, p. 203. The all-over mosaic "à répétition" decor, initially created by Antoine-Michel Padeloup in the 1720s, was very fashionable through the 1760s. Attributing the binding to Derôme can be deduced from the presence of a fine roulette frame on the insides (contreplat). Jacques-Antoine Derôme (who died in 1760) used the roulette, followed by his son, Nicolas-Denis (master in 1761) for nearly fifty years. Moreover, the characteristic of the Derômes' style is found here: the decor of the binding was done in fillet, freehand, and with the use of very few tools. Two tools from this workshop are visible here: a small palmette (G. Barber, List 7, tool 69) and a dashed (en pointillés) rouelle. They can also be seen on the binding with a decor very similar to a Giordano Bruno preserved at Aix-en-Provence (see L.-M. Michon, pl. XXXV), which also has the same frame roulette as the Ratio Studiorum. Finally, the frame roulette and the small palmette are found on a 1709 Nouveau Testament preserved at Waddesdon Manor (W.Cat. 569, ill. on p. 128 and 289) and bound, according to Giles Barber, between 1760 and 1765, "possibly by N.D. Derôme." In fine and fresh condition. Joints very slightly rubbed and with one short crack at foot of upper joint.       Antverpiæ [i.e., Leyden]: Christophorum Plantinum, 1586. Second Plantin Edition n. An intelligent and scholarly reader of the classics, Marc Antoine Muret (1526-85) makes suggestions in these "Various Readings" for emendations and interpretations of a number of ancient authors, principally Cicero, Horace, Plautus, and Aristotle. Within each of the 15 books are typically 20 different sections, with no discernible pattern in their arrangement; Muret seems to have written them down as the observations struck him. The first eight books were published originally in 1559 by Zilleti in Venice, and the final seven books appeared for the first time in the 1580 Plantin edition, of which this is a reprint done (despite what the title page says) in the Plantin office in Leyden. Voet indicates that Plantin and Muret were introduced by the Netherlandish Jesuit Joannes Gravius and that they began correspondence in 1574 about the publication of the "Readings." After many delays, impatient letters, and indecision over the proper dedicatee, the text finally was printed some six years later. A professor of literature at Bordeaux, Muret taught the young Montaigne. Harried in France on charges of Protestantism and homosexuality, Muret fled to Italy, where he was befriended by the publisher Paulus Manutius. Christopher Plantin (1520-89) set up shop in Antwerp as a bookbinder in 1549, but he turned to printing in 1555 and soon rose to the top of his trade, both as a printer and type designer. He produced, among a great many things, the celebrated Antwerp Polyglot Bible of 1569-72 and a steady stream of emblem books. In 1575, he employed nearly 150 workers, who helped to keep more than 20 presses going, and for a time, he established premises in Paris and Leyden. The owner whose 18th century bookplate appears at the front here is apparently the Robert Shafto of Benwell (1732-97) referred to in the famous song "Bonny Bobby Shafto." He was a handsome and cavalier M.P. who campaigned using the "Bonny Bobby Shafto" nickname, and the song's lyrics supposedly refer to his jilting of a certain Bridget Belasyse, who died at the time of Shafto's marriage to Anne Duncombe. Ours is quite a fine copy of an uncommon book.. 175 x 108 mm. (6 7/8 x 4 1/4"). 325 (i.e., 425), [20] pp. Second Plantin Edition. Bound in very pleasant 18th century vellum, yapp edges, flat spine with title written faintly in ink. Plantin compass device on title page, historiated initials. Front pastedown with the armorial bookplate of Robert Shafto of Benwell; rear pastedown with the armorial bookplate of (Shafto's relative) William Adair. Voet 1724; Graesse IV, 628. Text with light marginal browning (one margin with three small brown spots), crease and tear in one leaf from faulty trimming (no text loss), otherwise very fine, the binding with virtually no soiling and without any appreciable wear, and the text clean and quite fresh. Jacopo Bonfadio (nato a Gazano, sul lago di Garda, intorno al 1509), ebbe l'incarico di storiografo ufficiale della Repubblica ed occupò per molti anni la cattedra di filosofia all'università di Genova, dove fu giustiziato nel 1550, con l'accusa di sodomia, che verosimilmente occultava quella di eresia. LACKING title page and text leaves - I8 (pp. 143-144), L6 (pp. 170-171) and O6 (pp. 217-218) all of which are supplied in manuscript written on laid paper in an early hand (18th-19th century). Bound in full 19th century calf and carefully re-backed preserving the old spine. Binding shows rubbing, wear, and areas of darkening or staining. The bottom corner of the front cover is carefully restored. Interior pages show occasional spots of light spotting, soiling, staining and smudging. Jean Bodin (1530-1596) was a French jurist and political thinker. His influential witch hunting and demonology manual ?"La Demonomanie des sorciers?" (first published in 1580) was based in part on his own experience as a judge in several witchcraft trials. Numerous cases are analyzed. The author offers lurid details concerning witches?' Sabbaths, devil worship and supernatural murder. Cases of Lycanthropy and demonic possession are also discussed. The third section of Bodin?'s treatise is devoted to interrogation techniques and to court procedure in cases of witchcraft. The author recommends the use of torture, even when children and invalids are concerned. He also warns that people who deny the existence of witchcraft are often witches themselves.

Floriated and historiated woodcut initials, grotesque tailpieces, headpiece containing a device of a plant being watered with motto "A poco a poco", all three titles with a different engraved architectural border, each containing Ziletti’s star device at head, 108 fine engravings of Imprese by Girolamo Porro. First title fractionally dusty, the odd thumb mark. A very good copy, clean and crisp, the engravings in excellent strong impression, in C17 Italian speckled calf, spine, with raised bands, gilt in compartments with gilt fleurons at centres, tan morocco title label gilt, covers a little worn, joints cracked at head. a.e.r. First edition of this fine book of imprese, richly illustrated with a long series of engravings of emblems or devices by Girolamo Porro, and Latin (or in a few cases Greek) mottos, all within different ornamental borders, each associated with a contemporary notable and accompanied by Camillo’s text of iconographic explanation, and verses. The work is dedicated to Ferdinando de Medici in which Camilli pays tribute to the engraver Porro "Nella qual opera, se io per insufficienza hauesi manca in qualche cosa, ho alemeno supplito nella nobilta, & bellezza delle Figure, lequali sono state per la maggior parte intagliate da M. Girolamo Porro". Many are the imprese of important Italian families such as the Gonazaga or Borghesi. Interestingly this work contains the imprese of Sir Henry Lee (part 2 pages 12-14), Master of the Ordnance under Queen Elizabeth I. Lee became Queen Elizabeth I’s champion in 1570 and was appointed Master of the Royal Armouries in 1580, an office which he held until his death. As Queen’s Champion, Lee devised the Accession Day tilts, held annually on 17 November, the most important Elizabethan court festival from the 1580s. He seems to have been well known to Camilli, and Camilli’s work was influential at the Elizabethan court, providing Elizabethans with devices for their pageants and tournaments. Books of imprese quickly became a favored genre of the Renaissance. They are, as here, crammed with news, from classical historiography to contemporary events, including animalistic, astrological and poetic curiosities, and the relation of customs. The imprese's proximity to emblems, with the love of encoded expression helped to explain their success. A typical example in this work is the impresa of Nicolaus Bernardinus Sanseverinus, Prince of Bisignano, whose device shows the optical illusion of a stick placed in water with the motto "Fallit imago". This device was taken up by the Elizabethan author Chapman and used on the title page of his work ‘Ovids Banquet of Sence’ published in 1595 with the motto changed to ‘Sibi conscia recti’. Antverpiae Ambivaritor, Antverpiae (Anvers) 1586 -1587, in-4 (17x22cm), relié. - Very rare collection of engravings of first edition of two complete sets of gods and nymphs represented marine Length and edited by Philip Galle in Antwerp. The set consists of 34 plates, 167 mm by 217 mm, and numbered etched on copper and two headpieces title. The first set of male deities entitled Semideorum marinorum amnicorumque sigillariae imagine perelegantes in picturae statuariaeque artis tyronum usum, was conducted in 1586, while the second series, Nimpharum oceanitidum ephydridum potamidum naiadum lynadumque icons in gratiam picturae studiosae ivventutis deliniatae scalptae and editae has philip. Gallaeo, dedicated to female deities, published the following year, in 1587. Note that a collection entitled Nimpharum icons had previously appeared in 1583, but did not contain the 17 engravings. The last plank Nimpharum bear the signatures of Hiero Wierix and Ioann. Collaert. Binding contemporary in full vellum by little flaps, smooth spine tooled, head, title to the pen. Also handwritten annotations of the contemporary on the back of certain plates making explicit the identity of the figures. Some very tiny worm works at meals and contreplats without gravity. Born in 1537 in Haarlem, Philip Galle, from a dynasty of engravers, is one of the largest publishers of burinistes and Flemish and Dutch schools in the second half of the sixteenth century. Student from 1556 the humanist scholar Dirck Volkertsz Coornhert in Haarlem, he succeeded him as an engraver works by Maarten van Heemskerck (1498-1574). The following year, he joined Antwerp publishing house of the artist, merchant and printer prints Hieronymus Cock (1518-1570), he ends up, again, for to succeed in establishing itself as the one of the main writers of his contemporary Pieter Brueghel the Elder (1525-1569). In the center of the production of engravings Antwerp, Philip Galle counted among his students Hendrick Goltzius (1558-1617) and Crispin Password the Elder (1564-1637). This valuable collection of allegories, presenting the main gods of the oceans, seas, rivers and streams, appears, from a stylistic point of view, as a remarkable syncretism Nordic naturalism and Italian Mannerism. The trip began between 1560 and 1561 across Germany, France and Italy, was probably one of the sources of these eclectic influences. The michelangelesques accents of female musculature, as well as lengthening silhouettes worthy of a Madonna Parmesan, reflect the contributions of the Italian High Renaissance and the beginnings of mannerism. In the legacy of a Schongauer or Dürer, expressive faces and skin tones, to verismo effects, attests for its more Germanic aesthetics. This acuity and concern for the realistic rendering of bodies and expressions to link the activity of portraitist Philippe Galle, who engraved from life many of his humanist contemporaries, including Vesalius, Erasmus, Thomas More and Guillaume Bude . He became famous as well as one of the first authors of books of learned men of the sixteenth century portraits. Through these two series of engravings, composed characters in turn inherited from ancient mythologies as well as stream personifications of different European geographical areas, Galle manages to make subtle play of physiognomy. Mediterranean shores of the Nile (Nilus) to those of the Thames (Tamesis) north, the artist makes significant diversity of the figures, which each seem to oscillate between classical idealization and realistic individualization. The iconography to topographic or mythological character, each character refers to its myth or its geographical area; Obelisk, pyramid and crocodile accompanying the Nile, Neptune (Neptunus) brandishing his trident, Charon's boat floating on the river Styx, Nereus (Nereus) surrounded by her daughters, the Nereids, Hydra and Hydra, Glaucus (Glaucus) contemplating Scylla or Acis still reaching the sea in front of Galatea ... This collection of Philip Galle has to be seen in the development of staged allegorical in the art of the sixteenth century, mainly due to the rise of emblem books, of Hieroglyphica of Horapollo published by Aldus in 1505, to 'Iconologia Cesare Ripa 1593. There is a copy of the two books that make up our work in the library of Cambridge, but descriptive details; Nimpharum the icons is also indexed in Netherlandish books published by Andrew Pettegree, Malcolm Walsby. We also expect a copy in the library of Passau, one at the National Library of France, one in the National Library of Spain and the University Library of Erfurt. The University of Liège has made this collection only state of 12 engravings. The other copies that we identified have only male series, they are kept at the Library of Dilbeek Cultura Fund, the British Library and the Bodleian Library at Oxford. The Metropolitan Museum of New York, the British Museum and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, including retain some planks extracted from two series. Rare copy containing two complete sets, large margins, with headpieces titles in the Flemish antique bookbinding. - [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Très rare recueil de gravures en édition originale des deux séries complètes des dieux et nymphes marines représentées en pied et éditées à Anvers par Philippe Galle. Il s'illustra ainsi comme l'un des premiers auteurs de recueils de portraits d'hommes savants du XVIe siècle.   A travers ces deux séries de gravures, composées tour à tour de personnages hérités des mythologies antiques aussi bien que de personnifications de cours d'eau des différentes aires géographiques européennes, Galle parvient à rendre subtil le jeu des physionomies. Des rives méditerranéennes du Nil (Nilus) à celles de la Tamise (Tamesis) septentrionale, l'artiste rend sensible la diversité des figures, où chacune sembler osciller entre idéalisation classique et individualisation réaliste. L'iconographie à caractère topographique ou mythologique, renvoie chacun des personnages à son mythe ou à son aire géographique ; Obélisque, pyramide et crocodile accompagnant le Nil, Neptune (Neptunus) brandissant son trident, la barque de Charon voguant sur le Styx, Nérée (Nereus) entouré de ses filles, les Néréides, Lerne et son Hydre, Glaucos (Glaucus) contemplant Scylla ou encore Acis rejoignant la mer sous les yeux de Galatée... Ce recueil de Philippe Galle est à replacer dans le développement des mises en scène allégoriques dans l'art du XVIe siècle, notamment dû à l'essor des livres d'emblèmes, des Hieroglyphica d'Horapollon, publié par Alde en 1505, à l'Iconologia de Cesare Ripa de 1593. On trouve un exemplaire des deux recueils qui composent notre ouvrage à la bibliothèque de Cambridge, mais sans détails descriptifs; le Nimpharum icones est également indexé dans Netherlandish books publié par Andrew Pettegree, Malcolm Walsby. Nous comptons également un exemplaire à la bibliothèque de Passau, un à la Bibliothèque Nationale de France, un à la Bibliothèque Nationale d'Espagne et un à la bibliothèque universitaire d'Erfurt. L'université de Liège qui possède ce recueil fait seulement état de 12 gravures. Les autres exemplaires que nous avons pu identifier comptent uniquement la série masculine, ils sont conservés à la Cultura Fonds Library de Dilbeek, à la British Library de Londres, ainsi que qu'à la Bodleian Library d'Oxford. Le Metropolitan museum de New York, le British Museum de Londres, et le Rijksmuseum d'Amsterdam, conservent notamment quelques planches extraites des deux séries. Rarissime exemplaire contenant les deux séries complètes, grand de marges, avec titres frontispices, en reliure flamande de l'époque.
