Offered here in a rarely seen unsophisticated contemporary Oxford binding that is quite representative of its time and place, this is an uncommon copy of a substantial 16th century imprint recording one of an ongoing series of debates between a Protestant and a Catholic divine in Elizabethan times, with the purpose of demonstrating the open-mindedness of the sovereign. This apparent liberality did not, of course, extend to the possibility that the Catholic cause would be allowed to triumph; rather, it was hoped that the papist would see the light, recant, and accept the clemency of the queen. Herodotus's 'Histories' is one of the most important and well-known works of history in the western world. It records the cultures and societies of Greece, Northern Africa, and western Asian customs from the earliest times to the 5th-century B.C. This 1584 edition was published in Frankfurt by Andrea Wechel, a well-known publisher of works of Greek antiquity. However, a draw of this edition is that it was edited by Henri Estienne. Henri Stephanus, or Estienne, was a prolific 16th-century printer who began publishing works of Classical authors such as Aristotle, Xenophon, Thyucidides, Sophocles, and Herodotus. These illustrations helped inspire thousands of imitations throughout Europe on secular and religious themes. The commentaries on each emblem were written by French scholar Claude Mignault. Devices depict pastoral scenes, cathedrals, military, mythological creatures, and more. Bible in Greek, New Testament
Ex officina Christophori Plantini. Folio, 6 parts in 1; pp. [8], 186, [2]; 128; collating: ¶4, A-Y4, Z6; Aa-Qq4; woodcut device on title page; bound with: Biblica Hebraica, Antverpiae, 1584 [Hebrew-Latin Old Testament, Greek-Latin Apocrypha, etc. in various pagings from back of book], viz.: pp. [20], 183, [1]; 283, [1]; 84; 203, [1]; collating (from the back): †4, ‡ 6, A-O6, P8; a-x6, y-z8, aa-gg6, AA-RR6; (in all, 551 leaves); text in double column in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin; early 18th century calf, blindstamped panels on covers, red morocco label on spine; covers with dampstains, corners bumped and showing, small cracks starting at the extremities of the joints, occasional light minor dampstaining, but in all a very good and reasonably sound copy. Terminal flyleaf with elaborately penned inscription: "Isaac Sharpe [flourishes] dono Patris 1719." On the rear pastedown is Sharpe's early "Coll. Mag." bookplate dated April 4, 1683 - possibly the date of his matriculation at Magdalene College, Cambridge. The Greek N.T. starts at the beginning of the volume, and the Hebrew O.T. at the end, with the Greek Apocrypha of 128 pages between them. Each Testament has its own title page, and the mention of the Apocrypha on both suggests that it was intended to form an appendix to either of the Testaments if they were issued separately. See Darlow & Moule 4645 and 5106: "This forms the latter half of the complete Bible in the original languages, with an interlinear Latin translation; the whole reprinted from the Antwerp polyglot"; Voet A2 (p. 320).

Herrera, Alonso de
Commissioned by Cardinal Cisneros, the Obra de Agricultura-first published in 1513 in Alcala de Henares by Brocar- swiftly became the standard work of agriculture in the Spanish-speaking world, which included the Americas; the acceptance outgrew Hispanic territories and was promptly translated into French, Latin, Italian and English. The widespread reach was originally due to Cardinal Cisneros, a man interested in the prosperity of Spain, distributed the book amongst farmers. Herrera amended and edited at least 5 other editions during his life (Toledo 1520, Alcala de Henares 1524, Logrono 1528 and Alcala de Henares 1539). Herrera's magnum opus is of a practical nature, the aim is to aid the farmer, and thus he focuses on factors that are present in Mediterranean and Spanish agriculture products; it is based on ancient writers rather than modern, which he considered lacking of rigor, and Muslim sources, technics observed during the 10 years he resided in Granada -just conquered back in 1492, the Muslim culture was still much alive. The scope of his work reaches veterinary medicine, properties of food and their application for men's health, viticulture and wine, procedures for farming, the care of animals, superstitions, etc. Text set in double columns, title in red and black and with very large woodcut printer's device. Herrera (1470 - 1539) was an agronomist and writer, brother of the humanist Hernando de Herrera and musician Diego de Herrera, he studied in Granada and was chaplain to Cardinal Cisneros, who commissioned the writing of this book. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Printer's woodcut rabbit on title, grotesque woodcut head-pieces, floriated and grotesque woodcut initials, woodcut tail-pieces, small woodcut table in text, C18th engraved armorial bookplate on verso of title 'Ex Bibliotheca Publica Collegii Divio-Godranii'. A very good, crisp copy in contemporary limp vellum, yapp edges, remains of ties, a little soiled. Second edition in French of Peucer's encyclopaedic work on divination; "it seems to have been the most influential of his numerous writings which were concerned with the varied fields of medicine, astronomy, mathematics, natural history, and psychology", (Thorndike VI p. 493). On the whole the work approves of divination in natural circumstances - reading dreams, for instance, or the stars, but agrees with the Bible in condemning certain branches of divination related to demons and witchcraft. Peucer's bias is unflinchingly Protestant, denying the possibility of Miracles, and he attributed the successfulness of relics and invocations of saints to demons rather than divinity." After discussing divination in general, he turns to oracles and theomancy, then to magic, which he thus incorrectly implies is a variety of divination, whereas the opposite is true, then to divinatio … [Click Below for Full Description]

*** Titel: La Imperial' Citta D'Augusta - Il vero ritratto della antiqua, et famosissima Citta Imperiale Augusta . David Powell The historie of Cambria, now called Wales London: Rafe Newberie and Henrie Denham, 1584 First edition; complete with both free endpapers and unnumbered blank following p. 22; full leather (17C?) binding with gold trimming, slightly rubbed, recently sympathetically rebacked with gold and blind tooling; titlepage torn with loss (see pictures); one opening slightly more browned than the otherwise very clean and bright pages; occasional thumbmark; no significant annotation except for occasional short notes in a 17C hand. A lovely, complete copy of this seminal and most desirable work. Powell's Historie is famous for its account of the discovery of Arthur's bones at Glastonbury and the supposed discovery by Madog ab Owain Gwynedd of America in 1170. This publication was not superseded until Sir J. E. Lloyd published his famous A history of Wales from the earliest times to the Edwardian conquest in 1912. This particular copy was owned by Paul Panton of Flintshire and Anglesey, and it bears his bookplate on the front pastedown and his signature on the front free endpaper. Panton was a noteable book and manuscript collector, a generous patron of the arts and an associate of the noted antiquaries Daines Barrington, Thomas Pennant, Evan Evans (y Prydydd Hir) and Iolo Morganwg. The Panton manuscripts are now kept at the National Library of Wales and were used by the editors of The Myvyrian Archaiology of Wales, published in three parts between 1801 and 1807. A desirable copy of this important work, with Arthurian and American interest. Do not hesitate to ask if you have a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Boccaccio, Giovanni.
Venetia, Appresso I Gioliti, 1584. 9.5 cm x 15.4 cm. 107, [1] pages including illustrated titlepage and colophon. Disbound ! Only the rear board of the binding and the rear endpaper still present. The bookblock in very good condition with some minor, contemporary inkstains. Name of preowner „Bernard Riebling" in contemporary ink (16th or 17th century entry). Small lesion to titlepage and first three pages only. Very faint, faded dampstain to the outer margins of a few pages. Perfect candidate for an excellent new masterbinding to the taste of the new owner; maybe by Bayntun in Bath or any other excellent bookbindery that is capable of recreating a 16th century italian binding in style. Giovanni Boccaccio (16 June 1313 - 21 December 1375) was an Italian writer, poet, correspondent of Petrarch, and an important Renaissance humanist. Boccaccio wrote a number of notable works, including The Decameron and On Famous Women. He wrote his imaginative literature mostly in the Italian vernacular, as well as other works in Latin, and is particularly noted for his realistic dialogue which differed from that of his contemporaries, medieval writers who usually followed formulaic models for character and plot. Boccaccio grew up in Florence. His father worked for the Compagnia dei Bardi and, in the 1320s, married Margherita dei Mardoli, who was of a well-to-do family. Boccaccio may have been tutored by Giovanni Mazzuoli and received from him an early introduction to the works of Dante. In 1326, his father was appointed head of a bank and moved with his family to Naples. Boccaccio was an ap … [Click Below for Full Description]

SCHOPPERUS, Hartmannus
1584 Reynard the Fox Medieval Folklore Fairy Tale Amman WOODCUTS Schopperus Reynard the Fox has been a stable of fairy tale lore for centuries, with many countries, such as German, France, and other Low Countries, claiming the honor of his ‘birth-place.’ Told as a ‘brute-epic’, this tale of cunning mischief was finally written and printed during the late 15th- and early 16th-centuries. In fact, some scholars believe the origins of Reynard to have come from the 9th-century! This 1584 edition of Hartman Schopperus’s Latin version of Reynard, is a reworking of his original 1567 Latin edition. This printing; however, is particularly important in that in features 57 woodcuts by Jost Amman depicting Reynard and his adventures, many of which are hand-colored. This book is bound in its original, decorative vellum binding featuring an impressed figure wielding a sword and scales with the text “Iusticie quis quis picram iumine. (Seven Sages of Rome).
Hugues Gazeau, 1584. Early, uncommon edition of this French adaptation of The Seven Sages, in which Prince Erastus is persecuted by his lustful, jealous stepmother Aphrodisia -- a framing device for a series of cautionary tales told to the Emperor by the stepmother, the prince's wise tutors, and finally the prince himself. Of Eastern (possibly Persian) origin ca. the 5th century b.c., the work spread throughout Europe in a variety of forms and first appeared in this guise in 1564, translated from an Italian rendition. All of the early printings thus are now rare, with WorldCat locating => only one U.S. institutional holding of the present Gazeau edition. Binding: Red crushed morocco framed and panelled in blind double fillets with gilt-tooled corner fleurons, spine with raised bands, gilt-stamped title and publication information, and gilt-tooled strawberry leaf decorations in compartments; turn-ins with gilt compound roll, all edges gilt. => Signed binding by Capé, name camouflaged in lower front turn-in. Provenance: Front free endpaper with ex libris of Panof Grafsos Skinos, with shelving number; most recently in the library of American collector Albert A. Howard, small booklabel ("AHA") at rear.
