This is a reprinting of the first collected edition of 1555, containing Fracastoro's principal works relating to astronomy, philosophy, poetic, and medical treatises. The edition contains the following treatises: Homocentricorum, sive de stellis Liber I; De Causis Criticorum Dierum; De Sympathia et Antipathia Rerum, Liber I; De Contagioibus et Contagiosis morbis et eorum curatione; Navgerius, sive de Poetica Dialogus; Turrius sive de Intellectione Dialogus; Fracastorius, sive de Anima, Dialogus; De vini Temperatura Sententia; Syphilidis [Syphilis]; Joseph libri II as Alexandrum Farnesium; Carminum liber I. Fracastoro was a classmate and friend of Copernicus. His famous poem, on Syphilis, was first issued in 1530. It is described by Garrison and Morton as "The most famous of all medical poems." Salius Diversus Petrus,
Apud Ioannem Rossium,, Bononiae, 1584. [Click Below for Full Description]

Boccaccio, Giovanni.
Venetia, Appresso I Gioliti, 1584. 9.5 cm x 15.4 cm. 107, [1] pages including illustrated titlepage and colophon. Disbound ! Only the rear board of the binding and the rear endpaper still present. The bookblock in very good condition with some minor, contemporary inkstains. Name of preowner „Bernard Riebling" in contemporary ink (16th or 17th century entry). Small lesion to titlepage and first three pages only. Very faint, faded dampstain to the outer margins of a few pages. Perfect candidate for an excellent new masterbinding to the taste of the new owner; maybe by Bayntun in Bath or any other excellent bookbindery that is capable of recreating a 16th century italian binding in style. Giovanni Boccaccio (16 June 1313 - 21 December 1375) was an Italian writer, poet, correspondent of Petrarch, and an important Renaissance humanist. Boccaccio wrote a number of notable works, including The Decameron and On Famous Women. He wrote his imaginative literature mostly in the Italian vernacular, as well as other works in Latin, and is particularly noted for his realistic dialogue which differed from that of his contemporaries, medieval writers who usually followed formulaic models for character and plot. Boccaccio grew up in Florence. His father worked for the Compagnia dei Bardi and, in the 1320s, married Margherita dei Mardoli, who was of a well-to-do family. Boccaccio may have been tutored by Giovanni Mazzuoli and received from him an early introduction to the works of Dante. In 1326, his father was appointed head of a bank and moved with his family to Naples. Boccaccio was an ap … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bulino, 1584, sul piedistallo, a sinistra: 'OPUS PRAXITELIS; a destra: OPUS FIDIAE, subito sotto: 'HEVS TU QVI PRAETERIS MORARE PAVLVM AC INSPICE/IN QVIRINALI HI SVNT EQVI MARMOREI MVTILI ATQVE GRANDES ARTE VICTA NATVRA PARENS SPIRITVM CVR EPIRIT QVID PRAXITELES ET FIDIAS EFFINXERE ISTOS AEMVLAMVR SAT DIXI ABEL VALE SALVE MISCE BIBE DA MI; in basso a destra i dati editoriali 'ROMAE 1584/CLAUDII DUCHETI FORMIS'. V. Pagani. The dispersal of Lafreri’s inheritance, 1581-89, table a. Abraham ORTELIUS (1528 - 1598)
[Click Below for Full Description]

From ""Theatrum Orbis Terrarum"", latin edition of 1592. The first printed map of the Florida region. Also on the same sheet are maps of eastern Mexico and of Peru, thus completing the picture of Spain's American possessions. Florida is delineated by Geronimo de Chavas, who was the Cosmographer Royal to Philip II of Spain. The Chaves map of Florida is a prime example of an explorer's map since it records the recent discoveries of Cabeza de Vaca, De Soto, and Moscoso. Buchamer, Jacob; Johann Friedrich Schröter.
[Jena]: Typis Donati Richtzenhan, 1584. 4to (18 cm, 7.08"). [24] ff. The medical school at the University of Jena, one of the institution's four founding departments, was established in 1558. Roughly 25 years later, Jacob Buchamer of Halle received his degree in medicine with all due pomp and circumstance from Schröter (1513–1593, personal physician to the emperor and first rector of the university) — as documented in this testimony to Buchamer's knowledge and accomplishments. Schröter had previously been the moderator for Buchamer's thesis Ag?nisma Iatrikon de calculo renum et vesicae urinariae, printed in 1583. Both that work and this doctoral dissertation presentation are now uncommon; a search of WorldCat finds => only two institutional holdings, both in Germany, of the present item.         VD16 ZV 30477. Later plain paper wrappers; outer edges speckled red, carrying over to outer margin of title-page. Early inked monogram in upper outer corner of title-page; two instances of early inked marginalia. Pages age-toned with occasional small spots. A nice copy.

The earliest printed map to focus on China, and the first to illustrate the Great Wall. It was the first western map of China drawn directly from the findings of the Portuguese mapmaker Luis Jorge de Barbuda, or Ludovicus Georgius. Barbuda was a Jesuit, and he made a manuscript map of China from information on the area gathered by the Jesuit mission. Arias Montanus passed this map on to Ortelius. The map is oriented to the west. Japan is shown on a curved projection, borrowing from Portuguese sources. Wind wagons are shown in the north, a Chinese invention that also became popular in the Low Countries. 1584. Incisione in rame, colorata, mm 325x480.

The Greek N.T. starts at the beginning of the volume, and the Hebrew O.T. at the end, with the Greek Apocrypha of 128 pages between them. Each Testament has its own title page, and the mention of the Apocrypha on both suggests that it was intended to form an appendix to either of the Testaments if they were issued separately. See Darlow & Moule 4645 and 5106: "This forms the latter half of the complete Bible in the original languages, with an interlinear Latin translation; the whole reprinted from the Antwerp polyglot"; .
