VITRUVIUS POLLIO Marcus
Venezia, appresso Francesco de?' Franceschi, 1584.

VERRIUS FLACCUS, MARCUS and SEXTUS POMPEI FESTUS
Paris: Arnold Sittart, 1584; [Heidelberg]: Peter Santandrea, 1583. n. Hardcover. 178 x 111 mm (7 x 4 3/8"). 14 p.l., cccix pp., [13] leaves (last blank); lxxv, [10], ccxvi, [22] pp.; [2] leaves, 84 pp.; [1], 1-196, [18] pp.; 62 pp. Two works, in several parts, bound in one volume. With annotations and commentary by Antonio Augustin, Joseph Scaliger, and Fulvio Orsini. Pleasing contemporary calf, covers with central gilt wreath of olive branches, raised bands, spine panels gilt with cipher "D C G" at center flanked by a palmette and a vegetal trefoil, gilt titling, bottom panel with "OD" and "I8" on either side of the cipher. Printers' devices on the title pages, decorative woodcut initials and headpieces. Front pastedown with what appear to be early library shelf markings; one page with neat early marginalia. Adams V-590 and F-390. Covers slightly marked, spine with a bit of superficial crackling (and with one short crack in the middle of bottom panel), the text with faint browning and isolated minor soiling, a few leaves with long, shallow creases (not affecting legibility), otherwise in excellent condition, the binding solid and without significant wear, and the leaves clean, fresh, and smooth. This glossary of recondite Latin words and phrases was no doubt bound for a contemporary bibliophile with an extensive library. The "OD" and "I8" at the bottom of the spine appear to be the indication of a shelf location--not something frequently encountered on spines of this period. This designation and the location notation on the front pastedown that clearly relates to it (" … [Click Below for Full Description]

Half page woodcut illustration on title, printed in red and black; one double-page, and 21 full-page woodcut illustrations, mainly of warriors (most on horseback, some quite exotic), and 133 half-page woodcut illustrations (many on combat, and 60 illustrating a long poem), plus 133 smaller woodcut figures within the text (some repeated) including some elaborate tailpieces, and the printer's large, intricate allegorical vignette on a single leaf in the rear. In total 298 woodcuts excluding the individually engraved capitals. Bound in blind-stamped contemporary vellum. Edges red.* Beautifully illustrated and very rare Renaissance work on knightly horsemanship, horse-training, horse-breeding, horseshoes, etc. The plates are by the Swiss artist Jost Amman (1539-1591). The author was the former master of the royal stables, and only known by his initials, L.V.C. This book is renowned for its stunning illustrations of knights and horses in action. Ya'qub ibn Ishaq al-Kindi (and other authors)
- Lyon, J. Mareschallum, 1584. [6], 521 pp. Woodcut device on title-page. 12mo size, contemporary hardcover bluepaper boards. An early printed collection of medieval medical texts. The contents comprise: Corti, Matteo: Ad tyrunculos dosandi methodus. - Vittori, Benedetto: Compendium, de dosibus medicinarum. - Montagnana, Bartolomeo: De modo componendi medicinas, & de dosi earum. - Ya'qub ibn Ishaq al-Kindi: De medicinarum compositarum gradibus investigandis. - Rondelet, Guillaume: De ponderibus, sive de justa quantitate - Gorris, Pierre de: Formulae remediorum, quibus vulgo medici utuntur. - All treatises in this collection were printed earlier, and now very hard to find. Even this collected edition is a rarity. A remarkable fact about this collection is that it contains a treatise by Al-Kindi, the early medieval scientist from Basra who is often regarded as the father of Islamic or Arabic philosophy. Al-Kindi wrote on many subjects. Some of his works were translated into Latin. His treatise "de medicinarum compositatarum" was first published in Latin in Strasburg in 1531. It was reprinted as an appendix to another collection of medical works in 1558, and reprinted again to form part of the collection of medical titles which is here on offer. -- A good to very good copy. Boards worn and somewhat soiled. Old handwritten title vignette on spine. Internally very good, except for the title page where some paper loss has been very professionally restored. KOLBE VON WARTENBERG, Johann Casimir.
Ad 1: Wegehaupt 1186; not in Heltzel, Courtesy Books in the Newberry Library; ad 2: not in Wegehaupt. Two interesting German educational works, together in a contemporary binding. The first is the third edition of fatherly instructions to his children by the German nobleman Johann Casimir Kolbe von Wartenberg (1584-1661), originally written in 1650 and first published posthumously in 1674. Johann Michael Rüdiger added the valuable preface for the 1696 Cologne edition, dedicated to the 8 year old prince, later King Friedrich Wilhelm I of Prussia. The present edition includes all original prefaces and a new one, and adds a genealogy of the House of Kolbe von Wartenberg by Georg Helwich. The second work is the first edition of a complete educational course for a young prince by the German historian Johann Christoph Wagenseil (1633-1705), published in the year of his death. Between descriptions of his reception at the Imperial Court at Vienna by Leopold I, to whom the book is dedicated, the author covers reading, writing, arithmetic, languages, religion, ethics, history, geography, technique and arts, as well as hunting, riding, fencing, building fortifications, fighting wars, etc. With old owner's inscription of J.C. Sommer on both title-pages. Binding slightly soiled; old ink annotations on first blank and some underscoring in text. Very good copies.

FESTUS & M. VERRIUS FLACCUS.
Paris, apud Arnoldum Sittart, 1584.. 8vo. (28),309,(1),(24, last 2 p. blank), 75,(11),216,(24),84 p. Limp vellum. 17 cm (Ref: Smitskamp 61; Schweiger 355 & 1134; Brunet 5,2 1148) (Details: 5 thongs laced through cover; engraved printer's mark on title, motto: 'finis coronat opus') (Condition: The vellum is probably recycled from another book; that is why the cover is wrinkled, dog-eared, sl. soiled, and cut short; a small piece of the outer-edge of the backcover has gone; 3 names and a small inscription on the title, 1 name has been erased; partly slightly waterstained at the lower margin; some hardly visible pinpoint wormholes near the right lower corner of one quarter of the book) (Note: Festus is a 2nd century grammarian, who produced an abbreviation of a lexicographic work by Marcus Verrius Flaccus, a wellknown antiquarian and grammarian living in Augustan Rome. Verrius compiled an enormous lexicon in 80 books, full of unusual, difficult, and archaic words, with discussions about customs, political institutions, beliefs and Roman law. Remains of his work survive in the epitome of 20 books made by Sextus Pompeius Festus. Festus also added examples found in other sources; an other epitome of this epitome of Festus was made in the 9th century by the historian Paulus Diaconus. The original work of Verrius is completely lost, and only 1 manuscript of Festus survived the Middle Ages in a heavily mutilated form. The first reliable text, which was a great improvement compared to earlier editions was published in 1559 by Antonio Agustin, 1517-1586, who made good use of the Farne … [Click Below for Full Description]

ORTELIUS, Abraham].
Antwerp C. Plantin, 1584. Hand-coloured double-page engraved map, Latin text on verso. Dimensions: 400 × 545 mm. (15.75 × 21.5 inches). The first state of the first European printed map of China and one of the most decorative - a beautiful example. Oriented with north to the right, there are cartouches for the title, scale and privilege; on the map are elephants, Tartar tents and land-yachts. Japan has an extra landmass to the east, with its further reaches hidden by the scale cartouche. The Philippines appear, but with little accuracy or detail; they were not even named until the second state (c.1588).

[Reynard the Fox] Reinke de Vos, Latin; Hartmann Schopper, trans.; Jost Amman, illus
Frankfurt: N. Bassaeus, 1584. Frankfurt: N. Bassaeus, 1584. Hard cover. Very Good/Schopper's Latin version of the popular German beast epic narrating the adventures of Reynard the Fox, who outwits his enemies by sheer effrontry and brazen deceit. The Medieval Reynard cycle evolved out of Flemish and Dutch versions, and was first published in Low German in 1498. Schopper's Latin version, originally issued in 1567, made the stories available to a pan-European audience. This edition is especially noteworthy for its charming series of 57 woodcuts by the German master Jost Amman, which make their first appearance here. They proved quite popular and were reprinted through the 17th century.. 12mo (14 cm); [20, 465, [1] pages, [9] leaves (lacks final blank leaf); woodcut printer's device on title; with 57 woodcut illustrations (from 51 blocks) by Jost Amman in text. About a third of the woodcuts have been hand-colored with varying degrees of skill by an early reader. Bound in contemporary vellum, double-fillet panels with fleurons at outer corners and a floral ornament in centers, gilt but oxidized to black. Spine divided into four compartments. At foot of title page is an ownership inscription dated 1595, from Melchior Blorock of Wurzburg; a few other later entries on title page; worming on pastedowns. DECRETUM GRATIANI.
Venedig, Apud Magnam societatem, una cum Georgio Ferrario & H. Franzino, 1584.. Quart. Jahrhundert.. Sehr schönes, durchgehend in Rot-Schwarz-Druck ausgetsattetes Exemplar! [Click Below for Full Description]

London: William Brome, 1584. London: William Brome, 1584. First Edition. Hardcover (Full Leather). Good Condition. First Edition. Hardcover (Full Leather). Rebound in full brown calf, tooled, with new endpapers. Because, among other reasons, it blamed the witch hysteria on the Roman Catholic Church, it was ordered to be burnt when James I ascended the throne. As a result, many of the surviving copies are lacking at least the title page and index (the spine was usually defaced as well). This copy lacks these and also 6 leaves in the epistles and (probably unrelated to hiding the book) pages 327-330. All have been replaced with facsimiles bound in on sympathetic paper. Scattered sometimes heavy soiling and darkening , marginal annotations, notes, manicules etc., in an early hand, a few leaves with old paper repairs in the margins (none touching the text), one page in the preliminaries repaired and chipped at the edges, occasionally trimmed a little close just touching the running title, final page with two long tears repaired with Japanese paper, last two leaves with tears and loss to the upper corners. The four plates between 352 and 353 present and intact but with annotations. The astrological illustrations all present, most with some marks in an early hand. Despite its faults, a likable copy. xxviii, 560, index.& & Not only a great and thoughtful work of the English Renaissance, but a source for 200 years of witches in fiction (notably Shakespeare's weird sisters) and juggling and magic books.
