JOUBERT (Laurent).
Lyon, Etienne Michel, 1584. [Click Below for Full Description]

TASSO Torquato.
appresso Giulio Vasalini, In Venetia 1584 - Opera dedicata alla Sig.ra Bradamante Bevilacqua da Este. Cm.13x7,4. Pg.(24),228. Modesta legatura in pergamena rigida, con titoli manoscritti al dorso. Marca tipografica incisa in ovale al frontespizio. Alcuni capilettera e piccoli cartigli incisi. 150 gr.

ANONIMO (COLLABORATORE DI BAROCCI).
Sec. XVI. Olio su tela in cornice coeva.

[8] ff., 1584 columns, [49 (index)] pp. (half-title lacking).. 1694 Simon Johann Arnold's edition of Bacon's collected works, translated into Latin from the original English, published simultaneously at Leipzig and Copenhagen. Sir Francis Bacon (1561?-1626), in addition to rising to the office of Lord Chancellor, was a prolific and lively-minded writer, noted by the Oxford Companion to English Literature as "capable of varied and beautiful styles" and as exhibiting "a peculiar magnificence and picturesqueness in much of his writing." This Opera is a more complete collection of Bacon's literary, scientific, and philosophical productions than the first, which was published in 1665. This offers evidence of early readership in form of underlining in ink and occasional marginal notations, confined to early portion of the tome. Contemporary vellum, spine with gilt-stamped title; vellum showing minor scuffing and spots of discoloration. Front pastedown with a 19th-century bookplate; front free endpaper with edge nicks and short edge tears. Lacking half-title. Early inked marginalia and underlining, as above; leaves age-toned with intermittent light offsetting and foxing. One leaf with short tear from upper margin, not extending into text.

ORTELIUS, Abraham (1527-1598)
Antwerp: Christopher Plantin, 1584. THE FIRST MAP TO SHOW THE SOURCES OF MINERAL TREASURES IN AMERICA Copper-plate engraving with original hand color: paper size 173/4" x 221/4" References: William P. Cumming, The Southeast in Early Maps (Chapel Hill and London, 1998), 1, 6, 9. This map, which first appeared in the third (1584) edition of Ortelius's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum records the discoveries of Hernando de Soto's expedition of 1539-1543. Drawn by the royal Spanish cosmographer, Geronimo De Chaves, who had access to first-hand information from the latest discoveries by Iberian explorers, it is one of the very few maps printed in the sixteenth century that was based upon original Spanish sources. Generally the Spanish were very protective of their knowledge of the Americas, a considerable source of their wealth. Based on De Soto's manuscript, Chaves's "La Florida" was the earliest printed map of the Gulf Coast from Florida to Texas, and is usually considered the first map to delineate any part of the interior of the present-day United States. The plate contains two other maps of similar Spanish regions of influence, "Peruviae" and "Guastecan" (parts of present-day Peru and Guatemala), the latter combining with La Florida to extend the coastline of the Gulf of Mexico further south. La Florida, in particular, influenced all maps of the region for a century and is a primary source document of the first magnitude in the history of cartography. Few maps of the Southeast had a greater or longer influence on continental mapmakers than this map from Ortelius' … [Click Below for Full Description]
