Rheims: John Fogny, 1582. First Catholic Bible (New Testament) in English. Collation: a-c4 d2 A-5D4 5E2; [28], 745, [27] pp. With woodcut initials, head and tail pieces throughout. 1 vols. 4to (8-3/4 x 6-1/4 inches). THE FIRST ROMAN CATHOLIC NEW TESTAMENT IN ENGLISH. Very scarce first edition of the important Rheims New Testament, the first Roman Catholic version in English, translated from the Vulgate. Like the Geneva Bible, the Rheims New Testament was "produced by religious refugees who carried their faith and work abroad. Since the English Protestants used their vernacular translations, not only as the foundation of their own faith but as siege artillery in the assault on Rome, a Catholic translation became more and more necessary in order that the faithful could answer, text for text, against the 'intolerable ignorance and importunity of the heretics of this time.' The chief translator was Gregory Martin(c. 1542-1582) ... Technical words were transliterated rather than translated. Thus many new words came to birth... Not only was [Martin] steeped in the Vulgate, he was, every day, involved in the immortal liturgical Latin of his church. The resulting Latinisms added a majesty to his English prose, and many a dignified or felicitous phrase was silently lifted by the editors of the King James's Version, and thus passed into the language" (Great Books and Book Collectors 108). While Martin was responsible for the translation, the controversial textual annotations in defense of Catholic doctrine are attributed to Richard Bristow, one of the supervisors of the project; most … [Click Below for Full Description]

Caracci Agostino; Caliari Paolo
Incisione all'acquaforte e bulino di mm 355 x 505 su carta di filo. Filigrana cerchio. Secondo stato su due. In basso a sinistra "Paulli Caliarij Veronensis opus in ecclesia D. Caterinae Venetijs", alla stessa altezza più a destra "Giacomo Franco Forma" ed ancora più a destra "Aug. Car. fe. 1582". Acquaforte e bulino, 1582, firmata e datata in lastra in basso. Dimensioni 248x340. Etching and engraving, 1582, signed and dated on lower plate. Magnificent example of a very rare work, printed on contemporary laid paper with "sun in the circle with cross" watermark, trimmed to the platemark, in perfect condition. This work is very likely a devotional subject, dedicated to the Madonna of Itria … [Click Below for Full Description]

Francesco Petrarca (1304 - 1374) was an Aretine scholar and poet in Renaissance Italy, and one of the earliest humanists. Petrarch's rediscovery of Cicero's letters is often credited for initiating the 14th-century Renaissance. Petrarch is often called the "Father of Humanism". Lodovico Castelvetro (ca. 1505 - 1571) was an important figure in the development of neo-classicism, especially in drama. [Click Below for Full Description]

He is most known for his work "Garden of Peculiar Flowers" - a book of the esoteric, bizarre, and spirit world. Torquemada shares stories of brownies or sprites 'picking' on people, throwing stones at them, and showing general annoyance. He claims that exorcisms don't work on brownies, however good and often one was performed. This book is a very early look into poltergeists, exorcisms, pagan folklore, and haunted houses! Holy Bible
I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. In 1566, French theologian Rene Benoit printed a French translation of Jerome's Latin Bible. Benoit was a Roman Catholic Bishop of Troyes; however, his Bible was highly criticized for being too Calvinistic in his interpretation. However, this accusation may have been warranted. Benoit was a close friend of Henry IV, a notable Protestant royal. According to Chambers, this 1582 French edition was shared by a number of printers including Crevel, Lescuyer, Mallard and Pavie, all of which were publishing in Rouen. It should be noted that the Crevel edition is the only printing not included in the USTC. [Attributes: First Edition]
