LA POPELINIERE, Henri Lancelot-Voisin de
Paris,: l'Olivier de Pierre l'Huillier, rue Sainct Jaques, 1582.. Small quarto, folding world map, title-page vignette, some toning and browning, the title-page with a neat old repair and an early owner's signature; generally an excellent copy in contemporary vellum, a few neat repairs & some stains, spine lettered in ink, endpapers renewed; in a modern folding morocco case, lettered in gilt. Very rare, first edition, first issue: a serious sixteenth-century proposal detailing the author's utopian dream of creating French colonies in the Great South Land beyond the Straits of Magellan, which he claims is a habitable land larger than America and richer too. The work is 'un vÈritable projet colonialiste en vue de la Terra Australis' (Anne-Marie Beaulieu, Les Trois Mondes de la PopeliniËre). The work includes a highly attractive map of the world based on the original of Ortelius in 1570, even down to the detail of the legend from Cicero (here translated into French).Voisin de la PopeliniËre (1541-1608) was a Protestant speculative geographer known for his interest in the "incogneu" world. His utopian project for French expansion in the only vaguely theorised unknown worlds of the southern hemisphere marks him out as one of the foundation writers of the long French interest in the region, interest that would culminate in the voyages of Bougainville and his successors. In this tradition, as Frank Lestringant has noted, Les Trois Mondes was the pioneer work to forsake the northern confines of the New World to the ambitions of the other European powers, preferring to turn to 'the … [Click Below for Full Description]

BETTINI, Mario. [BETTINUS, Marius].
An outstanding copy of this rare compendious scholastic mathematical work by the Jesuit mathematician Mario Bettini (1582-1657), encompassing all the major fields of mathematics, but paying special attention to geometry. Bettini's Aerarium covers a wealth of information not just in mathematics but also astronomical geometry, all of which had, as with Bettini's previous Apiaria of 1645, gone through the Collegio Romano's rigorous censorship under the eye of Christoph Grienberger (d.1636), who as Clavius' successor was responsible for enforcing adherence to Aristotle in matters of natural philosophy.

European scientific thought during the period 1620-1660 was dominated by the revolutionary investigations of Galileo and others into the nature of the solar system. The Jesuits, as the chief proponents of traditional Aristotelian teachings, were hailed by many as the intellectual champions of the Catholic Church, the philosophical mathematical and Scriptural arguments of Jesuit writers against the Copernican theory of a sun-centered solar system the main driving forces of seventeenth century inquiry.

At the beginning of the seventeenth century to understand meant to grasp regularities, and this knowledge was based largely on the accepted authority of ancient texts. However as the worldview expanded the certainty of such views began to diminish. For the philosophically well-educated mathematics appeared as one of the few refuges of eternal truths untainted by the possibility of such dissent.

Jesuit colleges, such as that at Parma where Bettini taug … [Click Below for Full Description]

In 1579, Francois was invited by William the Silent (William I, Prince of Orange 1533 -1584), to become hereditary sovereign to the United Provinces. On September 29, 1580, the Dutch States-General (with the exception of Zeeland and Holland) signed the Treaty of Plessis-les-Tours with the Duke, who would assume the title "Protector of the Liberty of the Netherlands" and become the sovereign. Las Casas, Bartolomé de
[Geneva: Gabriel Cartier], 1582. [16],222pp. 12mo. 18th-century calf, spine and board edges finely gilt, rebacked with original backstrip preserved. Binding slightly worn. Occasional minor foxing, light age toning. A very good copy. Las Casas, the first great historian of the New World, arrived in Cuba in 1502 and spent most of the ensuing years in the Caribbean and Mexico until his return to Spain in 1547. An early critic of Spanish policy, he nonetheless rose to be Bishop of Chiapas. He witnessed firsthand the appalling destruction of the American Indian population at the hands of the Spanish, something he continually fought against as a priest. After his return to Spain and throughout his old age, he launched a series of attacks on Spanish policy towards American Indians. The first and most influential of these tracts is BREVISSIMA RELACION DE LA DESTRUYCION DE LAS INDIAS, which describes the numerous wrongs inflicted upon the Indians, mainly in the Antilles. Written in 1539, it was first published in Seville in 1552, and editions in French, English, and German appeared before 1600. The present work is one of two French editions printed in 1582, following the initial 1579 Antwerp publication of this French translation by Jacques Miggrode. As with many later editions published outside Spain, this printing helped promote Protestant attacks on the Spanish crown, perpetuating the "Black Legend" of Spanish destruction of the Indians. A rare French translation of Las Casas' most famous work on the Indies. EUROPEAN AMERICANA records five U.S. locations plus the Bibliot … [Click Below for Full Description]

URSILLUS CAESAR.
expensis D. Baptistae de Christophoro, Iacobi Anielli de Maria, et sociorum Bibliopolarum Neapolitanorum, 1582. Cm. 21, pp. (8) 612 (98). Raro. Cfr. Sapori, 734. L'Écluse was in London when Drake returned from his epic voyage (1577-80) and received the plants and seeds collected by Drake’s crew. Immediately upon his return to Antwerp he had Plantin print this account, containing descriptions of the specimens collected, notes on localities, and a generous homage to Sir Francis Drake and his crew. As his translation of Acosta’s book on the drug plants of the Orient (the second title in this volume, see below) was already in press, this book was styled as a sequel to the Acosta, and the two almost certainly issued together. Boccaccio, Giovanni; Salviati, Leonardo (ed.)
Filippo & Iacopo Giunti, e'fratelli, Venice, 1582. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition. 1/4 later but early vellum over marbled boards, title penned to spine. Lacking the title and all before The table of contents and the final page of the register, page 585 in manuscript, but textually complete in regards to the Decameron (including the often expurgated pages 215/216 critical of Venice). (13), 585, (42). The missing pages were likely expurgated as they contain Salviati's facsimile authentication (verso of 585) and the Medici seals (title page, final page). The counter-reformation drove interest in a new, more presentable edition of Boccaccio. Too important to ignore, but too filthy to read, the Council of Trent supported a much expurgated edition of 1573, sometimes jokingly called "The Family Decameron". Incensed by the shredding of a work so central to Tuscan identity, Francesco I de' Medici, The Grand Duke of Tuscany ordered a revision to be undertaken. Salviati restored the text, making changes to 52 of the 100 tales. Reprinted in October of 1582 in Florence, they apparently were gauging reaction by first publishing in Venice. Ruscelli's 1552 edition had ended up on the list of banned books. Publication information from the colophon on the first register leaf. Scattered minor dampstaining, wear and a few repairs to first table of contents page, scattered foxing and a few small wormholes, but generally clean. Lovely initial letters throughout. Contemporary limp full vellum, m.s. spine title. Very good. FIRST LATIN EDITION; third edition overall. ?No third French edition appears to have been published, its place supposedly being taken by the first Latin translation in 1582... This, the first Latin edition, has been long regarded as taking the place of a third French edition, since no third has ever been found and since this one lies between the second, 1579, and the fourth, 1585, edition of the Oeuvres... I think we can take it as conclusive that the 1582 Opera represented to Pare his third edition. It must at least have been planned as early as 1577, when he failed to include, among those he gave to Viart as a wedding gift, the books which were still to be published 'as well in Latin as in French'? [Doe]. ?The reputed translator-editor, Jacques Guillemeau, was an excellent classical scholar and the lifelong friend of Pare... But although Pare's Opera is known as Guillemeau's translation, and is so indicated on the title-page, it was in reality the work of someone else, unidentified, Guillemeau states, in his dedication to Miron, that t … [Click Below for Full Description]
