[Click Below for Full Description]

BRANCACCIO Giulio Cesare
appresso Vittorio Baldini, In Venetia, 1582. In-4 gr. (310x260 mm.), pp. 206. [Click Below for Full Description]

Per gli Heredi di Seth Viotto, Parma, 1582. In 16, pp. (12) + 261 + (3). Dedica all'illustre Sig. Giorgio Pallavicino gentil'huomo genovese. Cian, La Satira, p. 172 ss. Bible. O.T. Psalms. Latin. Buchanan. Paraphrases. 1582
Antuerpiae [Antwerp]: ex officina Christophori Plantini 16mo {but with horizontal chain lines} (12 cm; 4.75"). 285, [1] pp.. 1582 Second => Plantin press edition of George Buchanan's paraphrases of the Psalms, printed in the year of his death, after a first in 1580. The Scottish-born Buchanan (1506?-82) was a historian and poet who served as tutor to James VI, the online DNB saying of him that "although his reputation has fluctuated[,] Buchanan has never ceased to be a figure of considerable stature." Printed in italic type with sparing use of woodcut initials or ornaments, the work was clearly meant to be a pocket companion. Evidence of readership: An early reader has reacted to the text by adding manicules, underlining many phrases and words, adding an occasional word or four in the margin, and filling the front and rear pastedowns and the rear blank pages with notes and comments. Provenance: Pacific School of Religion (properly released). Binding: Contemporary alum-tawed leather elaborately tooled and embossed in blind with a variety of rolls, fillets, and stamps, including one roll of a vine pattern with bust medallions. All edges carmine. WorldCat locates only two copies in U.S. libraries. Binding as above, lightly rubbed; old library stamps (as per provenance above) on rear pastedown and final blank page. A very good copy.

Ad 1: First Italian translation of Peruschi's study of Akbar's realm. "The first section is based mainly upon the Account of Akbar prepared by Monserrate at Goa in 1582 shortly after his return from the first mission to Akbar's court ... Peruschi modified it with materials taken from letters dealing with the second mission of 1591. Following his [Monserrate's] narrative, Peruschi reproduces in his second part the texts of four letters written in 1595 by the members of the third mission as forwarded to Europe by the Provincial at Goa" (Lach). The capital of the realm, Fatehpur Sikri, was built six leagues from Agra, with great and sumptuous palaces. The palace complex consisted of a number of independent pavilions arranged in a pattern derived from Arab tent encampments.Ad 2-3: First Latin translations of these letters on the Jesuit mission in Japan and the history (of christianity) of the country, both compiled or written by Luis Frois. They are valuable sources of information on Japanese cultural, political and religious life.Ad 4: Second edition of this work on the 7 most important churches and basilicas in Rome, including an account on their relics. ANANIA, Giovanni Lorenzo d'
Venice: A. Muschio, for A. San Vito at Naples, 1582. Small quarto, with five folding engraved maps; a few leaves slightly embrowned, a few stains; early ink ownership inscriptions on title (one crossed out causing tear), ink stamp erased from title; some interesting early ink marginalia, endpapers renewed but overall a good copy in contemporary flexible vellum, manuscript spine label. With the Ruscelli world map. Best edition of this important sixteenth-century summary of geographical knowledge, containing for the first time the suite of engraved maps. First published in Naples in 1573, this is one of two subsequent editions of the book printed in Venice for distribution in Naples and the first to include the fine double hemisphere world map, and a double-page map for each of the four sections that divide the book: Asia, Africa, Europe and America. The world map is based on Ruscelli's, which was the first double hemisphere world map to appear in an Atlas (Ruscelli's version of Ptolemy's Geografia, Venice, 1561), and which had in turn been based on Gastaldi's world map of 1548. No southern continent appears in this version, while the mass of land joining Asia and America is described as Terra Incognita. Subsequent versions of the map appeared in various editions of Ruscelli's Ptolemy (1562, 1564 and 1574), but not until the end of the century was a southern continent added. The appearance here in Anania's work is actually its last appearance before it was revised to show a south land.On the other hand both the Asia and the America maps included here (also based on those used … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]
