Agostino CARRACCI
Bulino, 1582, firmato e datato in basso a destra. Bellissima prova. Engraving, 1582, signed and dated lower right. From a painting by Paolo Veronese. Example in the first state of two, on the address of publisher James Franco. Magnificent proof, rich tone, printed on contemporary laid paper without watermark, trimmed to the coperplate, small restoration in the central part perfectly executed, otherwise in excellent condition. The work comes from the painting by Veronese in the Galleries of the Academy, but in 1575 it was located in St. Catherine's Church in Venice. The Carracci faithfully reproduces the original composition, and made perfectly sparkling effects of the painting Caliari. Bartsch said rightly that this is one of the most happy of Augustine. Beautiful proof. De Grazia, Le Stampe dei Carracci, p. 125, 104 I/II; Bartsch 98. Dimensioni 344x505. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Noonan, The road to Jerusalem: pilgrimage and travel in the age of discovery (2007), pp. 158-160. Rare eighth(?) edition of the Dutch translation of a work on Biblical travels, written by the German Protestant pastor and theologian Heinrich Bünting (1545-1606), first published in German in 1581 and translated by Matthias Hasaert (1578?-1663). The work proved extremely popular and appeared in almost 80 editions up to the 18th century. "However much a work of the study, this book could be easily taken and read as a travel book. Bünting, although he had never actually visited Palestine, produced an original work by recasting Sacred Scripture into a Reissbuch" (Noonan). The work is divided into four parts. The first deals with the travels from the Old Testament, starting with a description and a woodcut plan of Jerusalem. Two other woodcut folding plates show the Temple of Solomon and the route the Jews took from Egypt to the Holy Land. The second part explains the Biblical currencies and units of measurement. The third part resembles the first, but deals with the journeys from the New Testament. The work closes with a short theological treatise on the four Evangelists. With an owner's inscription on flyleaf. Browned throughout, some marginal smudges, some occasional small spots and one plate slightly torn along the fold. Binding somewhat soiled, spine restored. Overall a fair copy.

Busbecq, Ogier Ghislain De; Christopher Plantin
Antwerp: Ex Officina Christophori Pantini, 1582. 16mo. 127p Altera editio. Latin text. Disbound. A scarce account of Busbecw's travels of how as he traveled from Constantinople to the sultan's court at Amasia. He and his companions encountered some Turks digging up stones from the ruins to use for new buildings. They were horrified when the workman uncovered a beautiful statue from antiquity and the workman smashed it to bits. When they expressed their outrage, the workmen jeered at them and asked if they had planned to worship it and pray to it. He also found a coppersmith who had melted down ancient coins to make new copper kettles. This is the second edition of a work that is seldom seen. OCLC: 63795716. References: XVoet 852; Ind. Aur. Occasional old ink marginalia and underlinings) (Note: This triumvirate of Latin erotic poets was already united in one edition in 1472, published in Venice by Vindelinus de Spira. Editions of the three poets together remained immensely popular through the ages. Schweiger dedicates ten pages, with numerous titles, to combined editions of these three poets. The commentary of Muretus was published first in Lyon in 1559. The commentary of Scaliger was first published in Paris in 1577 by Mamertus Patissonius 'in officina Roberti Stephani'. Guicciardini
C. Plantin 1582 - Gelria et Zutfania (Gelderland & Zutphen- Holland) by Guicciardini; published c.1582-8, Antwerp by C. Plantin for Guicciardini. Very fine 17th-century engraved map with outstanding full hand color. Note the sailing ship above the distance scale in the Zuyder Zee. Large bold title cartouche at bottom right. Plantin was born in 1514 and died in 1589. Plantin left his native France for Belgium because of religious persecution. In Antwerp his work, at first as a bookbinder, began in 1549. He began the production and publishing of books as a printer in 1555. His establishment continued to work until 1867 and is now preserved as the Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp. Plantin was the leading European printer of the second half of the 16th cent., and his books are admired for their accuracy and their typography. His equipment included types designed by Garamond and Granjon. In VG to VG+ antiquarian condition, slight minor wrinkling or creasing, beautifully hand colored. A pleasing example of this nice Dutch map. Sheet measures c. 16 1/4" W x 13 1/2" H Map area measures c. 12 1/4" W x 9 1/8" H. Deys, Guicciardini Illustratus, pp. 209-10 (1.2- noting the appearance of "17" in bottom right corner) Tooleys Dictionary of Mapmakers, vol.3 , p.442R846
