1581. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Claude Guichard was a 16th-century French poet and historian who is most remembered for his important study on funerals and death rituals from around the world. Guichard discusses ceremonial features beginning with Ancient Greek and Roman times through rituals used by Native American Indians. However, Guichard seemed to be rather enamored with Roman history and his focus was not solely on funeral ceremonies. He discussed Roman laws and medals. According to Hoefer, "In this work Guichard interprets Roman laws, medals and ancient inscriptions in a skillful manner ... He has reproduced the various species of military crowns, with very graceful small prints." This beautiful work is filled with 42 woodcut illustrations depicting decorative initials, coins, grave markers, medals, ancient Roman chariot races, and a particularly interesting illustration of a body being prepared for burial. This work is one of the earliest known works to cover funeral practices of Native Americans. It also contains an account of the destruction of the Halicarnassus Mausoleum and the discovery of King Mausolus sarcophagus. [Attributes: First Edition]

St. Augustine]; Augustinus Aurelius
Wirzeburgi: Ex Officina Henrici Aquensis, episcopalis Typographi, Anno MDLXXXI [1581]. A very early printing. Small 8vo, bound in contemporary vellum. [1], 92 leaves. A very well preserved copy, the textblock clean and crisp, the binding still in fine condition. A VERY EARLY PRINTING OF THIS HIGHLY IMPORTANT TEXT FROM ST. AUGUSTINE'S CONFSESSIONS AND MEDITATIONS. Aurelius Augustinus was considered one of the four great founders of the Latin Church. Augustine was educated as a Christian, became a follower of Manichaesim, studied scepticism and Neo-Platonism and was eventually converted to Christianity. The leap from Neo-Platonism to Christianity can be found in Plato's idea that the truth is immaterial--that any good or anything beautiful was eternal and real while material things are unreal. Christianity, as it was developing, had its own interpretation of the idea that the Good, or in this case God, was eternal. Augustine became Bishop of Hippo in North Africa and wrote the Confessions about five years after accepting this position. The writing of the Confessions inaugurated a new literary style: "their frank description of both emotional and intellectual problems, their acute psychological observations and the analysis of complex sentiments, and at the same time their obvious sincerity and humility, account for their immediate and lasting influence." [PMM] Beyond revealing his own human qualities, however, Augustine's intention was to introduce his concept of the doctrine of grace. That is, the idea that man's soul is a vehicle for illuminating God's … [Click Below for Full Description]

Conte Natale (1520 - 1582).
Venezia (Al segno della fontana, 1581). In 16°, piena perg. coeva, tit. man oscritto al dorso, nervi, pp. (16nn)-730-(44nn).

CLAVIUS Christoph (1537-1612)
FRANCESCO ZANETTI, 1581. Legatura settecentesca in piena pelle; al dorso, autore e titolo in oro su tassello rosso, fregi in oro agli altri scomparti; bei tagli marmorizzati; guardie marmorizzate. All'interno, numerosi diagrammi e illustrazioni nel testo. Cfr. (Eagleton, p. 151) "Clavius describes fixed and portable dials, and includes diagrams for most of them. In common with earlier texts, some instruments are illustrated with two diagrams, one showing the construction details, and one showing the finished instrument". GUICHARD, Claude
1581 Guichard Native American Funerals & Burial RITES Greek Roman Illustrated Claude Guichard was a 16th-century French poet and historian who is most remembered for his important study on funerals and death rituals from around the world. Guichard discusses ceremonial features beginning with Ancient Greek and Roman times through rituals used by Native American Indians. However, Guichard seemed to be rather enamored with Roman history and his focus was not solely on funeral ceremonies. He discussed Roman laws and medals. According to Hoefer, “In this work Guichard interprets Roman laws, medals and ancient inscriptions in a skillful manner . He has reproduced the various species of military crowns, with very graceful small prints.” This beautiful work is filled with 42 woodcut illustrations depicting decorative initials, coins, grave markers, medals, ancient Roman chariot races, and a particularly interesting illustration of a body being prepared for burial. This work is one of the earliest known works to cover funeral practices of Native Americans. It also contains an account of the destruction of the Halicarnassus Mausoleum and the discovery of King Mausolus sarcophagus. A BEATIFUL COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE OF VINCENZO GALILEI’S MAIN WORK. ‘Vincenzo Galilei, father of Galileo Galilei, the astronomer who disenchanted the universe, was among the first to cut the ancient monochord in a series of experiments conducted in the 1580s, by subjecting instrumental sound to the instrumental reason of empirical science. Indeed, Stillman Drake suggests that Galilei’s experiments with sound ‘may have led to the origin of experimental physics’, inspiring his son to interrogate the world to verify the laws of nature as empirical fact. Galilei wanted to ‘demonstrate real things’, he said, in the spirit of Aristotle and not the numerical abstractions of Pythagorean mysticism. He collapsed music into ‘reality’ as an audible fact divorced from celestial values. ‘Galilei in … [Click Below for Full Description]
