Justin, Jacques Bongars
Paris: Dionysius Du Val, 1581. See pictures. Edge and corner wear. A little rubbing to boards. Spine slightly darkened. A little dust top-edge. 3 cm crack at bottom front joint. Prize inscription on pastedown (old hand). Tipped in typed catalog entry on flyleaf (only connected just at top-edge); also book seller pencil notes. A little loss at top corner of first 20 leaves, mostly just edge wear. A little thumbing. Occasional spot. Occasional dog eared page. Occasional toning. Scattered early underlining. Page 131 has a .5 cm fireplace ember hole. Some ex-libris and bookseller notes at rear endpapers and on back of colophon. A handsome copy, with nice margins and a great prize binding. A 17th century prize binding, (likely) signed by a professor and author, graces this 1581 first edition of Jacques Bongars' translation, with notes, prologue, etc., of the second century Justin's excerpts from the writings of the earlier Trogus. About the Binding Both the front and rear boards have the deeply impressed arms of the College du Cardinal-Lemoine, in Paris. The inscription on the pastedown, dated 1673, is signed by Desprez. Louis Desprez was an author, and Professor of Rhetoric at the College Cardinal-Lemoine in the late 17th century; in fairness, the signature might be a second Desprez but it seems likely the professor is whose name is applied. The prize is for "in ludis pub.", or "in public games". About the Work - This edition of Justin's excerpts of Trogus is noted; the translator, Jacques Bongars, did his best to prepare this edition from ancient manuscript fragments, and … [Click Below for Full Description]

the famous BOCP John Marbeck!
London: 1581. An extremely rare 16th century Bible dictionary created by John Marbecke four years before his death containing 1194 pages of definitions of words and names in the Bible with side references.John Marbecke is best known as the man responsible for The Book of Common Prayer being put to music. When the first Book of Common Prayer was published, in 1549, a need was felt for service music similar to that which had been used for the old Latin rites. So Archbishop Cranmer engaged one John Merbecke to provide such a collection of service music "containing so much of the Order of Common Prayer as is to be sung in Churches"Am extremely rare edition with only one known copy known according to World Cat. According to Foxe's Book of Martyrs Marbeck is listed as tortured and dead in his 1576 edition which of course this edition proves is false. This edition is of significant Anglican Liturgy interest as this is the same Marbecke who wrote musical settings for the original Anglican BOCP. Am extremely rare edition. Georg Braun
Koln: Braun & Hogenburg, 1581. Splendid 16th century double-page bird's eye view of the City of Edenberg (Edinburgh) taken from one of the most important city atlases, Braun & Hogenburg's Civitates Orbis Terrarium. Georg Braun edited the text, and Franz Hogenberg was the principle engraver. This from the Liber Tertus, printed in Cologne and issued from 1581-88. ~~From Braun's Commentary: "To the west of the city a mountain with a tall cliff rises up, upon which stands a castle, which is extremely secure due to its natural setting. On the side of the city, one that is paved with ashlar stone, leading from the Maidens' Castle to the monastery and to the royal palace, and the other is the highway. From the highway running from the north to south countless smaller roads branch off, all of which are lined with very tall buildings". ~~The Taschen edition of "Cities of the World" notes the enormous cultural importance of the Civitates as it "not only shows the towns but also features additional elements, such as figures in local dress, ships. .. and topographical details, that help convey the situation, commerical power, and political importance of the towns they accompany" [Taschen, ] Such is the case with this splendid bird's-eye view. Figures wearing the typical dress of the nobility dominate the foreground, flanked by simpler folk. Perched on top of Castle Rock is Edinburgh Castle (Castrum Puellarum). The upper horizontal street -- The Royal Mile -- leads from Castle Rock, and the town gate in the east and Holyrood Abbey.~~With attractive early coloring. ALEXANDRE VAN DEN BUSSCHE
PARIS: 1581. Édition originale Histoires tragiques ('tragic stories') were a genre of French fiction in 16th-17th centuries, a Baroque rendering of Boccaccio's type of short stories, concentrating on the dark side of human nature. The progenitor of this kind of a story was Pierre Boaistuau with his translation of Matteo Bandello's Novelli published in French as Histoires tragiques (1559). Boaistuau selected from Bandello six most dark and gorey stories and changed them for his means. He was followed by François de Belleforest who adapted 12 more stories for the new edition in 1570. Those dark mood stories were imitated by writers like Jacques Yver (Le Printemps d'Yver, 1572), Vérité Habanc (Nouvelles Histoires tant tragiques que comiques, 1585), Bénigne Poissenot (Nouvelles Histoires Tragiques, 1586), Alexandre Sylvain (Epitomes de cent histoires tragicques, 1581), and Bruneau de Rivedoux (Histoire véritable de certains voyages périlleux et hasardeux sur la mer, 1599). François de Rosset began to borrow plots for his tragic stories from contemporary crime chronicle (Les Histoires tragiques de nostre temps, 1615), and this innovation proved to be extremely popular. Another important author is Jean-Pierre Camus who adds … [Click Below for Full Description]

Koln: Splendid 16th century double-page bird's eye view of the City of Edenberg (Edinburgh) taken from one of the most important city atlases, Braun & Hogenburg's Civitates Orbis Terrarium. Justin, Jacques Bongars
Dionysius Du Val. About the Work - This edition of Justin's excerpts of Trogus is noted; the translator, Jacques Bongars, did his best to prepare this edition from ancient manuscript fragments, and etc.. Caspar Rutz, Mecheln 1581.
(Adams, F-1084. Einaudi, 5204. Haag, 'France protestante', VI, 747. INED, 1932. Kress, 146. 'Sources de l'Histoire de France', 2340). Traces de restauration à la reliure. Quelques rares auréoles claires. Ex. court de marge supérieure. Bon exemplaire, relié à l'époque.
