ROUSSET, François.
Extremely rare first edition of the work which coined the term 'Caesarian section' and was the first to advocate its use, in appropriate circumstances, on a living woman. Only three copies located in auction records, two of which were in modern bindings. This copy is beautifully bound in 17th century red morocco.

❧Garrison-Morton 6236; Wellcome 5593.

"In the year 1581, François Rousset, a Parisian physician published L'hystérotomotokie ou enfantement césarien, suggesting for the first time a 'laparotomy' with hysterotomy in the parturiant who could not be confined in the ordinary way, this of course being done in the last resort. This surgical intervention was not usually performed until then before the woman's death. Rousset is the man who gave this operation the name Caesarean section in memory of the supposed birth of Caesar. In support of this proposal, he gathered ten observations, six of them in which he personally took part without operating himself, as he was not a surgeon. Moreover, he did endeavour, by use of reason as well as authoritative arguments, to produce evidence that this intervention was actually feasible, saving sometimes the mother and child's lives while preserving the possibility of future pregnancy. The last part of the book is devoted to a detailed and meticulous description of the intervention. This revolutionary proposal was coldly received and vigourously opposed by the medical milieu, especially by Ambroise Paré. It was not more favoured in the course of the next two centuries and Rousset was often considered as an … [Click Below for Full Description]

SANSOVINO, Francesco.; VENICE
1581. SANSOVINO, Francesco. Venetia citta nobilissima et singolare, descritta in XIIII libri. [4], 286 (i.e., 278); 38; [34] ff., including final blank. Woodcut initials. 4to., 185 x 140 mm, bound in Venetian marbled paper imitating tree calf over boards, author and title gilt in second of five spine compartments, red and blue speckled edges. In Venetia: Appresso Iacomo Sansovino, 1581. |~||~||~||~| First Edition of the "first comprehensive guide to the city and the prototype of all subsequent guide books. As the major source for later writings on Venetian art, it proved invaluable to Ridolfi and Boschini in the seventeenth century, to Zanetti in the eighteenth and to Moschini in the early nineteenth. Ruskin acknowledged his debt to Sansovino in the Stones of Venice. "This book established a sixteenth-century provenance for innumerable works of art. It contains detailed topographical descriptions and gives information on works since lost or destroyed. The iconography of many of the paintings inside the Doge's Palace is explained, and it becomes clear that Francesco himself devised the literary programme for those in the Sala delle Quattro Porte" (Jennifer Fletcher in her introduction to the facsimile reprint of this edition, 1972). Cicognara refers to Sansovino's book as "la miglior illustrazione di Venezia." Schlosser calls this the first artistic topography of Venice, "di singolar valore, non meno che per l'abbondanza di notizie su uno dei periodi artisticamente piu ricchi." A substantial contribution to the history of the Republic, Sansovino's detailed topographical desc … [Click Below for Full Description]

Frankfurt, Joh. Schmidt, Sigmund Feyerabend, 1581.. Folio. 3 Teile in 1 Band. Leider konnte Alvarez keine kartographischen bzw. topographischen Ortsbes … [Click Below for Full Description]

Granada: Rene Rabut, 1581. First Edition. Hardcover (Full Leather). Good Condition. Later acid calf, modest wear at corners and spine ends. Provenance: with the stamp of Ricardo Heredia on the half title. (7), 96, (4) leaves. A very rare book on the cultivation of silkworms in the Yucatan printed in Granada, the center of the Spanish silk trade. BARNAUD (N.) ].
s.l., 1581. Peignot, I, 152. INED, 226. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Tegernsee: [Klosterdruckerei], 1581. Title in red and black. Illustrated with fifty-five woodcuts (ca. 100 x 65 mm.). Text and woodcuts within typographic ruled borders. [16],168 leaves. 1 vols. 8vo. Contemporary blindstamped vellum, spine neatly labeled in manuscript. Some minor soiling, internally fresh and clean. Demons and Sinners and Monks and Angels "It was also [the Bavarian Monastery in] Tegernsee that under the rule of Abbot Quirinus (1568-94) established a printing-press in 1573. The importance of printing was probably recognized at the very first on account of the art of wood-engraving which had been practised for a long time at Tegernsee, and of which very beautiful proof-impressions of the years 1472 and 1477 are still extant. The press at Tegernsee issued chiefly religious and popular works, and also scholarly and liturgical books of great typographical beauty" - Catholic Encyclopedia (Online). The woodcut symbolic illustrations depict the sufferings of purgatory and the strengths and pitfalls of the spiritual life; the accompanying explanatory text is keyed to the figures.

MANUZIO, Paolo
Londini: Excudebat Thomas Vautrollerius Typographus [for William Norton], 1581. [12], 505pp, [10]. Contemporary english calf, repaired and recased, showing remains of oval blindstamps. Lettered to fore-edge. Internally clean and crisp, with occasional marginal tearing/loss. Early ink inscriptions of S. Goode and F. Goode (followed by moto 'me jure tenet') to title. Paolo Manuzio (1512-1574), Venetian printer and humanist who continued the work of the Aldine press founded by his father Aldo. This collection of his ten books of grand Ciceronian letters and dedications to eminent contemporaries, first published in Venice 1558, proved of immense popularity with students of humanism across the continent. First published in England in octavo format (London, 1573), this edition printed by Thomas Vautroller for William Norton was the first to appear in the smaller sextodecimo format that endured reprinting under Robert Robinson (1591) and Richard Braddock/Robert Dexter (1603). This Vautroller edition appears in two states, with and in this case without mention of William Norton on the imprint but with the addition of a colophon with Norton's printer's device. Both are rare, with ESTC recording only four copies in the UK (BL, Cam, NLS and Ox) and three in the US (Huntington, Library Company of Philadelphia and Illinois). c/f Tomita 67.
